Pericles is a rarely produced play by Shakespeare. Its complicated plot has elements of both comedy and tragedy. It can also be a little bit confusing because it takes place over many decades and the action moves around to various locations instead of being mostly or fully set in one place like many of Shakespeare's other plays. However, it is quite a fascinating play full of elements like shipwrecks and pirates as well as lighter elements like a little bit of magic, heartwarming reunions, and much more. This version of the show even has a few delightful songs written just for the show and sung by the narrator's character. There are also other even darker elements like brothels and beheadings and a hint of incest which make the show unsuitable for young children.
The current production is extremely well done. Condensed into two acts instead of the usual five, the show moves along briskly. The actors do a terrific job of switching in and out of various roles without making it too confusing. There is great chemistry among the cast as well, and the show is like a well-oiled machine. There is just enough set and props to keep the audience aware of when and where they are and not be overwhelming. All in all, it is a lovely production.
