We decided to start this blog so we could spend time together doing something we both love and share it with you. We specialize in reviewing fun places to go and fun things to do, but we talk a little bit about everything. We would love to hear your views too.Jeryl M.http://www.blogger.com/profile/07486564210858835576noreply@blogger.comBlogger428313tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4714426150641760807.post-12145043811689269712024-03-18T09:30:00.151-04:002024-03-18T09:30:00.238-04:00The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers<div>We were given complimentary tickets to The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers for review purposes. It is more like being totally immersed in his life. However, to get more specific about it would spoil the fun of the many happy surprises that permeate the show. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDgpFvBzaF7lsQdEa-zsZti14dBRO7DmBi16NCphNtCttLQE7b07d2Wmvku-P4Am2nkrl2P5PbngvKcEhWF5Df72STwoyF6knyj78bg0BTD7N1t8YSbxnzbD2xQffvdUI10CNWSaVoGyEDTtNHBzEX76SGeM0L389vJbhfeltLCoi3W7pNVr5ylL5SaoHJ/s1800/Marc%20Summers%20in%20The%20Life%20and%20Slimes%20of%20Marc%20Summmers.%20Photo%20by%20Russ%20Rowland%20(3).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1800" data-original-width="1482" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDgpFvBzaF7lsQdEa-zsZti14dBRO7DmBi16NCphNtCttLQE7b07d2Wmvku-P4Am2nkrl2P5PbngvKcEhWF5Df72STwoyF6knyj78bg0BTD7N1t8YSbxnzbD2xQffvdUI10CNWSaVoGyEDTtNHBzEX76SGeM0L389vJbhfeltLCoi3W7pNVr5ylL5SaoHJ/w329-h400/Marc%20Summers%20in%20The%20Life%20and%20Slimes%20of%20Marc%20Summmers.%20Photo%20by%20Russ%20Rowland%20(3).jpg" width="329" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLRS2ZdBBGAYfBAGkoLWZ74YKrSCGAlA1EUfahJFg_UE06iBmS_kuNKGLfrK5WEPp3vYXaYbJrqn_vCL8CkPKM2Je5JVBB6CCUvTrzDyUzoDdUwdiX1Gyhn_u0cNcTiLXNbjemLwTqVShdrKEsLfP8jaHp4L-mDHVsHhLrY0aGRsHj976bdWXhnB4HMZ0n/s1800/Sock%20Toss%20at%20The%20Life%20and%20Slimes%20of%20Double%20Dare.%20Photo%20by%20Russ%20Rowland%20(9).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1204" data-original-width="1800" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLRS2ZdBBGAYfBAGkoLWZ74YKrSCGAlA1EUfahJFg_UE06iBmS_kuNKGLfrK5WEPp3vYXaYbJrqn_vCL8CkPKM2Je5JVBB6CCUvTrzDyUzoDdUwdiX1Gyhn_u0cNcTiLXNbjemLwTqVShdrKEsLfP8jaHp4L-mDHVsHhLrY0aGRsHj976bdWXhnB4HMZ0n/w400-h268/Sock%20Toss%20at%20The%20Life%20and%20Slimes%20of%20Double%20Dare.%20Photo%20by%20Russ%20Rowland%20(9).jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>If you grew up on Double Dare, you will really enjoy this nostalgic show. Even if you didn't, the show is such a joyous delight that truly anyone can enjoy it. If you're more of an Unwrapped fan, you may be slightly disappointed. That show definitely isn't covered as much as the other, and in fact, is mostly glossed over. However. if you arrive at the theater early enough, you will get to see clips of that show (as well as clips from Double Dare) that run before the start of this show. All in all, whether the show is nostalgic to you or you are completely unfamiliar with Marc Summers and his television history, this show is just a rip-roaring exuberantly good time.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuoDMeFt4yJecxSa1N9SNIRbIYUnti0KZFWEEWAQSgLTmrc1D74ZiZdmOi6nHmYogV11Rr27qTOy9RY0W6s9_CM7gtEo7Zo16fB-V3S5sp-77O8PxmPUN7PnRr05vsf9f-k9Wz4-HscksIQ7IfAyFzIRGhce-Ce4gcQvWM5PXsRSic0ALjO3Eh3_TCXFpd/s1800/Marc%20Summers%20in%20The%20Life%20and%20Slimes%20of%20Marc%20Summmers.%20Photo%20by%20Russ%20Rowland%20(5).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1131" data-original-width="1800" height="251" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuoDMeFt4yJecxSa1N9SNIRbIYUnti0KZFWEEWAQSgLTmrc1D74ZiZdmOi6nHmYogV11Rr27qTOy9RY0W6s9_CM7gtEo7Zo16fB-V3S5sp-77O8PxmPUN7PnRr05vsf9f-k9Wz4-HscksIQ7IfAyFzIRGhce-Ce4gcQvWM5PXsRSic0ALjO3Eh3_TCXFpd/w400-h251/Marc%20Summers%20in%20The%20Life%20and%20Slimes%20of%20Marc%20Summmers.%20Photo%20by%20Russ%20Rowland%20(5).jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAhOQyuRefu6PWd8rAadLlLHF8yzVxHrT7TsniYsgH5fJSSnx-fk6VPf4z05icNUYJhmA3CW43F3tm9lhRC4Z1BcBdNKQi0XpXLwePsVRaHsbdf4Lr7hq5rA4UN40NnfRfWUzhPB37LZDKWpp1Xp8czDrnsslzHljQ2TAmGl_XGsE6_SzhDFHpKa5mAFWr/s1800/Marc%20Summers%20in%20The%20Life%20and%20Slimes%20of%20Marc%20Summmers.%20Photo%20by%20Russ%20Rowland%20(13).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1062" data-original-width="1800" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAhOQyuRefu6PWd8rAadLlLHF8yzVxHrT7TsniYsgH5fJSSnx-fk6VPf4z05icNUYJhmA3CW43F3tm9lhRC4Z1BcBdNKQi0XpXLwePsVRaHsbdf4Lr7hq5rA4UN40NnfRfWUzhPB37LZDKWpp1Xp8czDrnsslzHljQ2TAmGl_XGsE6_SzhDFHpKa5mAFWr/w400-h236/Marc%20Summers%20in%20The%20Life%20and%20Slimes%20of%20Marc%20Summmers.%20Photo%20by%20Russ%20Rowland%20(13).jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>And that's our view. It has been more than 90 years since the work’s 1932 American premiere by American Symphony Orchestra founder Leopold Stokowski with the Philadelphia Orchestra. It was recorded the next day for a remarkable twenty-seven 78 RPM discs. This concert closes the ASO’s 2023-24 season at Carnegie Hall. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;">Wagnerian in conception, Schoenberg’s </span><span style="background-color: white; font-style: italic; text-align: justify;">Gurre-Lieder</span><span style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;"> is his largest work. It was written during the composer’s tonal period and represents the ideal of late Romanticism, full of lush, colorful orchestration along with endless melodies and a highly chromatic harmonic language. The complexity of the work can be demonstrated in part by its gargantuan orchestration, which includes 40 violins; 6 timpani, tenor, snare, and bass drums; 3 four-part male choruses and an eight-part mixed chorus; cymbals, triangle, tam-tam, ratchet, glockenspiel, xylophone, and even large iron chains. Met with a standing ovation at its Viennese premiere, the cantata springs from a sonnet in an 1868 novella titled </span><span style="background-color: white; font-style: italic; text-align: justify;">A Cactus Blooms</span><span style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;"> by the young Danish poet Jens Peter Jacobsen. The story is based on a 14th-century Gurre legend about King Waldemar, his passion for the maiden Tove Lille, their love tryst at Gurre Castle, and Tove’s subsequent murder by the king’s jealous wife. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="background-color: white; font-weight: bold; text-align: justify;">Tickets</span><span style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;">: Priced at $25–$65, tickets are available at </span><a data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f%3D001dKJ-YTaDJdlqD1aFAOpIq6pF9JFpfM1EmXb3hJrwIeixZ4gOLwkmtFwsP-yS1UmIqLLY3jd9hBUMmkNEsbCIAET7q5Cx6T8D5EpXzrANRSAmtVYHaqFlFHBrM99bEaxvvaLSW9cDWLmtmCXS8Pv7FA%3D%3D%26c%3DJEgcnt0YUHgiMCk1WMGnakI-hOBPvfe_YZzBC_t8e7vCkCDg35xgDw%3D%3D%26ch%3DjPA-N2xgcGAQSVTlCZmdVJpxSBQ_D0vI38ou7FOiE7dJDXpmUYqVDw%3D%3D&source=gmail&ust=1710557319715000&usg=AOvVaw2i5KsfOus-M1YkOt6TQZr8" href="https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001dKJ-YTaDJdlqD1aFAOpIq6pF9JFpfM1EmXb3hJrwIeixZ4gOLwkmtFwsP-yS1UmIqLLY3jd9hBUMmkNEsbCIAET7q5Cx6T8D5EpXzrANRSAmtVYHaqFlFHBrM99bEaxvvaLSW9cDWLmtmCXS8Pv7FA==&c=JEgcnt0YUHgiMCk1WMGnakI-hOBPvfe_YZzBC_t8e7vCkCDg35xgDw==&ch=jPA-N2xgcGAQSVTlCZmdVJpxSBQ_D0vI38ou7FOiE7dJDXpmUYqVDw==" style="background-color: white; color: blue; text-align: justify;" target="_blank">carnegiehall.org</a><span style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;">, by calling CarnegieCharge at 212.247.7800, or visiting the box office at 57th St. & 7th Ave.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div> <span style="font-family: verdana;"> <span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>XXX</b></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><p class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin: 0in 0px; text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 25.2px;">12) BEDLAM ANNOUNCES READINGS FOR THEIR<u></u><u></u></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin: 0in 0px; text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 25.2px;">2024 <i>DO MORE: NEW PLAYS</i> SERIES</span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; margin: 0in 0px; text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 25.2px;"><br /></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin: 0in 0px; text-align: center;"><b><span style="line-height: 22.4px;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;">THIS SPRING AT THE WEST END THEATRE<u></u><u></u></span></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin: 0in 0px; text-align: center;"><b><span style="line-height: 22.4px;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;">FREE TICKETS BY RESERVATION ONLY<u></u><u></u></span></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin: 0in 0px; text-align: center;"><b><span style="line-height: 22.4px;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;">VISIT <a data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=http://BEDLAM.ORG&source=gmail&ust=1710601114321000&usg=AOvVaw1AQeN2JBqNGqbha91m1h_d" href="http://bedlam.org/" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">BEDLAM.ORG</a> FOR MORE INFORMATION</span></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin: 0in 0px; text-align: center;"><b><span style="line-height: 22.4px;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin: 0in 0px; text-align: left;"><span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="font-size: small;">Now in its fourth year, Bedlam's </span><b style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><i>DO MORE: NEW PLAYS</i></b><span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="font-size: small;"> readings series returns with five thrilling new pieces of theater. The show which originally premiered on Broadway in 1981 also spawned the 2006 movie starring Beyonce, Jaime Foxx and Eddie Murphy among others including Jennifer Hudson in her Oscar-winning movie debut. Its fast-paced book is rumored to be based on the story of Diana Ross and the Supremes, and its score is full of fun catchy songs including the title number. The show is generally a crowd-pleaser, and the current production is no exception. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8D2ZXR0vLwe5b9ZQF7O1ec9bpMITrC85Gija7pCbtpRH0icuIe0Zxok6jNbhU7OrXFRyktgdV-JR4jVZbYwohF_uXZOpGNgMF4oOacjDmP2aFv8orvZg_m7gP0v0gXOsq9YP3-i-3mzSRdOXa3e3-c_hMsb_q-XrC1RbZKZy90cvnkvjU1jcusp0LkwHr/s3984/4.%20Evan%20Tyrone%20Martin%20and%20Ta-Tynisa%20Wilson%20in%20McCarter%20and%20Goodspeeds%20Dreamgirls.%20Photo%20by%20Diane%20Sobolewski.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3984" data-original-width="2788" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8D2ZXR0vLwe5b9ZQF7O1ec9bpMITrC85Gija7pCbtpRH0icuIe0Zxok6jNbhU7OrXFRyktgdV-JR4jVZbYwohF_uXZOpGNgMF4oOacjDmP2aFv8orvZg_m7gP0v0gXOsq9YP3-i-3mzSRdOXa3e3-c_hMsb_q-XrC1RbZKZy90cvnkvjU1jcusp0LkwHr/w280-h400/4.%20Evan%20Tyrone%20Martin%20and%20Ta-Tynisa%20Wilson%20in%20McCarter%20and%20Goodspeeds%20Dreamgirls.%20Photo%20by%20Diane%20Sobolewski.jpg" width="280" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCW2yG86omud3nacg0a0fbA7RSzkMXghhwv61jYijc9ojAiC8j8_p48tjr56CtrrYtxxoP-eEZplqu8w92C8SDEL3OtpIK3idMwX5ZJgPMLJnJmBf2ZebdaHYJbT3ECw-Vd5FCssupJo7WW6bydHyECwPi5U-XxrPvV7O52Ww-t4XjokxOudoYimsIdy4O/s2048/7.%20Saint%20Aubyn%20and%20the%20cast%20of%20Dreamgirls%20in%20McCarter%20and%20Goodspeeds%20Dreamgirls.%20Photo%20by%20Roy%20Matusek%20(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1638" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCW2yG86omud3nacg0a0fbA7RSzkMXghhwv61jYijc9ojAiC8j8_p48tjr56CtrrYtxxoP-eEZplqu8w92C8SDEL3OtpIK3idMwX5ZJgPMLJnJmBf2ZebdaHYJbT3ECw-Vd5FCssupJo7WW6bydHyECwPi5U-XxrPvV7O52Ww-t4XjokxOudoYimsIdy4O/w400-h320/7.%20Saint%20Aubyn%20and%20the%20cast%20of%20Dreamgirls%20in%20McCarter%20and%20Goodspeeds%20Dreamgirls.%20Photo%20by%20Roy%20Matusek%20(1).jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>The standout performer in this production is Saint Aubyn in the role of James Thunder Early. His performance is electric. When he is on stage singing and dancing up a storm, you can't take your eyes off him. Trejah Bostic, on the other hand, is a little weak in the normally career-making role of Effie. Her first act closing number, And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going, is normally a show-stopper that has led many performers to awards. Jennifer Holliday and Amber Riley won the Tony Award and the Olivier Award respectively for the role and the previously mentioned Jennifer Hudson won her Oscar for the role as well. Ms. Bostic, however, is quite understated. She never quite reaches the right level of intensity to give the song the powerful impact on the audience it usually has. Her performance did actually gain some intensity in the second act, but it didn't have the same effect as if it had occurred earlier. The rest of the performances were mostly good, and the production, on the whole, was quite enjoyable.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ_YPMHkaN8_YjWK7Br3oNesp3sOHN_Qi4-JEH7WhRKYNZJFrULWH2Jf32_AgcP_WpFr9XVmjQrT0Y4U8zvNJzeicjJfOMR-JykgEHMrlui1TBUySxelWvQjBzysWDU9xtMnua7ITFaGKUxsW2rSU3tuma1RtdeYTvFKkBU1ydx7f5CBbXoH3mM9V89CxZ/s3989/2.%20Trejah%20Bostic%20in%20McCarter%20and%20Goodspeeds%20Dreamgirls.%20Photo%20by%20Diane%20Sobolewski.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3989" data-original-width="2659" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ_YPMHkaN8_YjWK7Br3oNesp3sOHN_Qi4-JEH7WhRKYNZJFrULWH2Jf32_AgcP_WpFr9XVmjQrT0Y4U8zvNJzeicjJfOMR-JykgEHMrlui1TBUySxelWvQjBzysWDU9xtMnua7ITFaGKUxsW2rSU3tuma1RtdeYTvFKkBU1ydx7f5CBbXoH3mM9V89CxZ/w266-h400/2.%20Trejah%20Bostic%20in%20McCarter%20and%20Goodspeeds%20Dreamgirls.%20Photo%20by%20Diane%20Sobolewski.jpg" width="266" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQn3IE60n53cVcxIDobHvkgQDOeNWi9nXxb9862td7LEdJ-0zbHjGBwffPjeu41VkAwBqGH2xVzLiyEJfIovHPXRCfPMjrEPuwRSoAl65UBOHlgdjZPPBze1NIwxokXVrjaVPkP84xMYfYCaqusZBdInJEhrYZ23Lv4TWgXJFC0sBNRudtSXC2smgykUPy/s4140/11.%20The%20cast%20of%20Dreamgirls_Photo%20by%20Diane%20Sobolewski.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2760" data-original-width="4140" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQn3IE60n53cVcxIDobHvkgQDOeNWi9nXxb9862td7LEdJ-0zbHjGBwffPjeu41VkAwBqGH2xVzLiyEJfIovHPXRCfPMjrEPuwRSoAl65UBOHlgdjZPPBze1NIwxokXVrjaVPkP84xMYfYCaqusZBdInJEhrYZ23Lv4TWgXJFC0sBNRudtSXC2smgykUPy/w400-h266/11.%20The%20cast%20of%20Dreamgirls_Photo%20by%20Diane%20Sobolewski.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div></div><div>And that's our view.
