I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

2) Sunday in the Park With George

Eamon Foley brings a bold, new, dance-forward reimagining of the Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine masterpiece to the stage. Inspired by the Georges Seurat painting, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” Sunday in the Park With George is one of the most acclaimed musicals of our time; it won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize and garnered 10 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. As George completes his most ambitious work, the artist struggles to create meaningful art and meaningful connections with those he's closest, including his lover, Dot. Misunderstood by the artistic community, George has the capacity to engage with the subjects on his canvas, but not with the people in his life. A century later, Seurat's great grandson – also an artist named George – is lost and in search of direction. He finds his path forward, illuminated by the color and light of the past.

3) 43 Stage of Grieving: A Comedy

43 Stages of Grieving: A Comedy tells the story of a pregnant, dying robot and a human who attempted to live forever. Like almost anyone who has grieved, they can both attest that the idea of only five stages of grieving is hilarious. But with a presumably incoming infant on the way, they can’t sit around and eat cheese all day (there are of course stages of grief for both hard cheese and soft cheese). Together they try to make plans for an unknown motherhood, kind but complicated technology, and a future without them. This is a comedy for a grief saturated world.

It’s Celtic, for this generation. Featuring revamped classics of “Danny Boy,” “Tell Me Ma,” “Wild Rover,” and many more well-known songs, the show’s reimagined contemporary score blossoms alongside the brash Irish charm of the live dance cast. A Taste of Ireland - The Irish Music & Dance Sensation merges cultural traditions, modern flair, and craic galore, to deliver a performance that has been leaving audiences across the globe jigging on their feet for the last decade.

5) Alan Cumming is Not Acting His Age

Cumming’s puckish spirit and eclectic joie de vivre is on full display in Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age, an evening of story mixed with song mixed with a joyful and mischievous exploration of our most communal of pastimes: aging! Here, Cumming covers all the bases: sex, death, and bacchanalia, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself – Kander and Ebb tunes blended with contemporary favorites, and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. He also discusses the effects of gravity, the time the mom from the Brady Bunch punched him, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

8) Once Upon a Bridge

Early one morning on Putney Bridge in London, three strangers’ lives collided for one fleeting second. Playwright Sonya Kelly weaves a tale about human triumph and frailty, about the power of destiny and chance, and why sometimes we choose to hate, and other times we choose to dance.

This play was inspired by a real incident: in 2017, a jogger pushed a woman into the path of an oncoming bus on Putney Bridge in London. After the push, the jogger kept running and didn’t look back. The quick-thinking bus driver managed to swerve and narrowly avoid the woman. CCTV footage of the incident was released at the time, but the jogger was never found.

Figaro: An Original Musical has a book by Ashley Jana and Will Nunziata with music and lyrics by Jana. Nunziata is set to direct the West End premiere later this year.

Set in mid-1800s Italy, Figaro: An Original Musical is the hauntingly beautiful tale of Sienna, a young woman who dreams of singing but feels imprisoned by her life on her father's farm. When a chance encounter with two young orphans thrusts her into the life of a traveling performer, she meets the handsome Figaro, who promises to make all her dreams come true - but there is always a price to fame. Part love story, part mystery, Sienna's journey to discover herself and live the life she always wanted is fraught with twists and turns until it culminates in a moment that will change the course of her life forever.

The recording is currently available digitally on all major platforms and at www.CenterStageRecords.com

The Original Off Broadway cast recording of The Gospel According to Heather, a new musical with a book, music and lyrics by Paul Gordon is now available on all digital platforms

In The Gospel According to Heather, Heather Krebs just wants a boyfriend. But how can she even navigate her way through high school if she might be the New Messiah? A small town in Ohio grapples with politics, religion and teenage romance in this eclectic pop musical.

16) Most Likely Not To

Most Likely Not To… is an edgy new musical comedy, created by the spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) community, offering a light-hearted look at life with disabilities and a window into how ableism colors everyday situations. Follow our protagonist — a high-powered fashion designer — as she navigates a meet-cute, an awkward high school reunion and a dodgy run-in with the airline industry while traveling cross-country with her wheelchair. With an eclectic ensemble cast, the production features show-stopping musical numbers in a comedic twist on disability like you’ve never seen before.

The six-song EP is produced by Adam Pryor and mixed by Grammy Award nominee Michael J. Moritz Jr., who also leads the band. Featuring songs by Greg Dean Borowsky, James Ian, Peter Mills, Katya Stanislavskaya, and Melvin Tunstall III, the show’s cast includes Lauryn Adams, Darilyn Castillo, Andrew Chappelle , Sarah Dacey Charles, Bryan Cortes, James Ian, Cedric Leiba Jr., Alexis Loiselle, Joel Manuel, Phil Sloves, Yasmeen Suliman, Jesse Swimm, Melvin Tunstall III, Natalie Weiss, Allie Williams, and Jessy Yates.

In total, 13 members of the SMA community played a role in the development of Most Likely Not To…, including 7 people living with SMA and 6 non-disabled caregivers who serve as SMA advocates. Both the star and much of the supporting cast are living with SMA. The script-writing process involved SMA community members along every step of the way. Most Likely Not To… features original songs, performed by members of the SMA community, including full ensemble numbers, a hilarious parody of air travel, a soulful duet and a 90s remix of “SPACES”. “SPACES” was a first-of-its-kind musical collaboration between Genentech and the SMA community recorded in 2021 to highlight the talents and humanity of people with disabilities and demonstrate that people with disabilities belong in all spaces.

Most Likely Not To… is anow digitally at CenterStageRecords.com and on all digital platforms (https://orcd.co/mandelamusical).

17) AMERICAN CLASSICAL ORCHESTRA PERFORMS

BACH’S B MINOR MASS

AT ALICE TULLY HALL WITH THE ACO CHORUS

MARCH 7, 2024

Soloists are Sopranos Kristen Hahn and Nola Richardson,

Countertenor Reginald Mobley, Tenor Steven Soph, and

Bass Steven Eddy

Founder and Artistic Director Thomas Crawford leads the American Classical Orchestra (ACO) in a performance of Bach’s monumental B Minor Mass with the acclaimed ACO Chorus at Alice Tully Hall on Thursday, March 7 at 7:30 PM. One of Bach’s best-loved vocal works, the B Minor Mass is widely considered to be the crowning achievement of the Baroque era. J.S. Bach completed it a year before his death in 1750.

Featured soloists are soprano and crossover artist Kristen Hahn, who recently appeared at the Kennedy Center in Hello Dolly; soprano Nola Richardson, hailed by The New York Times for her “beautiful tone;” Grammy-nominated American countertenor Reginald Mobley, who has forged a stellar career across Baroque and Classical repertoire; noted Bach interpreter tenor Steven Soph, praised for his “impressive clarity and color” (The New York Times); and Baroque music specialist bass Steven Eddy, a 1st Prize winner of the 2019 Oratorio Society of New York Competition.

After the March 7 concert, the American Classical Orchestra will next appear on May 8, 2024, at Alice Tully Hall, in a program titled Astronomical with works by W.A. Mozart, William Herschel, Johan Daniel Berlin, and C.P.E Bach.

Johann Sebastian Bach: Mass in B Minor, BWV 232

A musical setting of the complete Latin Mass, this 1749 work includes nine arias and duets, 14 ensemble sections for vocal groups of various sizes, and a range of instrumental solos in numerous styles. The composition as it is known today did not originate as a titled whole in any of Bach’s surviving documents. It was uncovered by his son C.P. E. Bach as a collection of his father’s hand-written scores grouped together inside four folders. The manuscripts were organized in four parts: The Kyrie and Gloria, followed by the Credo, the Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. Once published, the four parts became known as the B Minor Mass. Of note, Bach managed to complete the Mass while nearly blinded by cataracts. He subsequently underwent two unsuccessful eye surgeries using questionable methods, which worsened his condition.

Tickets, priced at $75, $55, and $35, are available at www.aconyc.org, by calling ACO at (212) 362-2727, ext.4, or by visiting lincolncenter.org or calling CenterCharge at 212.721.6500.

22) New York City Center announces full line-up for

Flamenco Festival

March 8 – 17, 2024

The two-week Festival commemorates

Vicente Espinel

and pays tribute to Paco de Lucía

Performances by the National Ballet of Spain, Olga Pericet, Manuel Liñán, Sandra Carrasco, Alfonso Losa, El Yiyo, and Paula Comitre

NEW YORK CITY CENTER announced full programming details for the return of Flamenco Festival, March 8 -17, 2024, as part City Center’s 80th Season at the Center of the Arts. This year the two-week Festival commemorates Vicente Espinel, the inventor of the “Spanish guitar,” a fundamental emblem of flamenco art, and also pays tribute to Paco de Lucía, the guitarist who popularized the instrument.

For over 20 years, Flamenco Festival has brought Spain’s exceptional dancers and musicians to City Center, showcasing the diversity and spirit of flamenco. From world renowned artists and icons of traditional flamenco to the most innovative, up-and-coming stars, the Festival is the largest celebration of flamenco in the US and is dedicated to the promotion of flamenco artists outside of Spain, presenting performances throughout the US, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The 2024 Flamenco Festival runs from March 1 – 17 throughout New York City for a total of 22 performances in 13 venues. The Festival is the largest display of Spanish culture in New York, and includes over 100 of Spain’s most celebrated Flamenco dancers and musicians. For the full program, visit flamencofestival.org.

From March 8 through 10, the internationally acclaimed National Ballet of Spain performs an epic Invocación, a fusion of Spanish choreography and heritage for 38 dancers led by director Rubén Olmo. Celebrating the rich diversity of Spanish dance, Invocación includes styles from flamenco to escuela bolero and pays tribute to the great dancer and choreographer Mario Maya, one of the creators of the Andalusian Flamenco Theater.

Next, Premio Nacional de Danza winner Olga Pericet gives a one-night-only performance of her evening-length work, La Leona (March 15). Accompanied by Jose Manuel León (guitar), Alfredo Mesa (guitar), Juanfe Pérez (bass), Roberto Jaén (percussion), and singer Israel Moro, Pericet embodies both meanings of La Leona—the lioness and the flamenco guitar of Antonio de Torres—with a witty, avant-garde deconstruction and celebration of traditional flamenco music and choreography.

Following the success of his 2022 Festival performance, ¡VIVA!, award-winning choreographer and bailaor Manuel Liñán returns to direct and perform in the Gala Flamenca (March 16 – 17). A festival within a festival, the gala includes performances from four flamenco superstars, accompanied by the talented vocalist Sandra Carrasco. Liñan is joined by celebrated flamenco artist Alfonso Losa, the sizzling El Yiyo (Miguel Fernández Ribas), and dazzling soloist Paula Comitre to close out the 2024 festival.

Expanding City Center’s mission to make the arts accessible to everyone, the Flamenco Festival will host a Community Night on Friday, March 15 at 6:30pm. These free pre-show events on Friday evenings invite City Center audiences and New York City community members to meet and mingle with artists, guest speakers, and each other. Building common bonds around the power of performance, events range from panel discussions to interactive learning experiences.

Tickets starting from $45 (fees included) can be purchased online at NYCityCenter.org, by calling 212.581.1212, or in person at the City Center Box Office. Access City Center Club is available to those 35 years of age and under and offers a limited number of $28 tickets (fees included) to City Center productions.
