Tips for Tuesday - Books: The Missing Mother of Rose Cottage & 100 Years of Laughter: American Comedy in the Twentieth Century

Books: The Missing Mother of Rose Cottage

          100 Years of Laughter: American Comedy in the Twentieth Century

Today we are recommending The Missing Mother of Rose Cottage by Cathy Hayward. Joanne was always told that her mother died in childbirth, but when she is pregnant with her own child, she is given a box of her old baby clothes, and mixed in with them she finds a picture of herself as a baby in her mother's arms. She realizes she's been lied to and becomes determined to find out what really happened to her mother. 

There's not much of a mystery in this book as it becomes pretty clear fairly early on what is going on. Nevertheless, it is still both extremely engrossing and quite poignant. Joane's mother's journey is extremely heartbreaking, and having half the book written from her point of view only makes it more so. 

The book juxtaposes how women were treated during and after childbirth in the past with the way they are treated now. Although this is an extreme case, it makes you wonder what our own mothers and grandmothers (or perhaps great-grandmothers for some of us) went through. The book may be triggering for anyone who has suffered a pregnancy loss, had a particularly difficult birthing experience, and/or an extreme case of postpartum depression. Otherwise, we highly recommend this book as a reminder to be grateful to our mothers because even though things have definitely gotten better, that doesn't mean it's always easy.

Today, we recommend 100 Years of Laughter: American Comedy in the Twentieth Century by Gary Berman. This book traces the history of comedy in the United States decade by decade from the golden age of Vaudeville in the 1940s through the heydey of stand-up comics and sitcoms on television in the 1990s. Numerous performers are discussed along the way, as well as plenty of radio shows, movies, and TV shows. There are also special essays on things like the old pie-in-the-face routine, comedy teams, breaking the fourth wall in comedy, and more. If you are a fan of American comedy and you are interested in a comprehensive look at its history, you are definitely going to want to add this book to your collection. 

And that's our view. The Missing Mother of Rose Cottage was published last Wednesday, July 15. 100 Years of Laughter: American Comedy in the Twentieth Century will be published this Thursday, July 23.

More Theater Monday - The Potluck

We were given complimentary tickets to The Potluck for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own 

What: The Potluck 

Where: Playwright's Horizons

Who: Recommended for Ages 17 and Up Due to Subject Matter

When: Through August 2, 2026

If you are looking for a light, happy musical, The Potluck is definitely not it. Rather, this heavy-hearted musical deals with the tragedy of the Greensboro Massacre. This perhaps little-known horrific event occurred when five labor organizers engaging in a protest against the KKK were murdered by members of the Klan and the American Nazi Party in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1979. 

This incident has been part of the playwright-composer, Cesar James Alvarez's, history his whole life. Not only were his parents part of the movement, although they were not there on the date of the occurrence, but he was, in fact, named after one of the victims. This show is his way of both reckoning with the tragedy and honoring the victims. 

The show is like an elegy, maintaining its heavy somber tone throughout, except for maybe a moment or two of humor here and there just to break up all the heaviness. The songs reflect this mood as well. There are no fun and catchy tunes that will stick in your head. Rather, the songs are kind of an elegiac poetry. They are haunting and mournful.

This is not an easy show to sit through and may, in fact, be triggering for some people. However, the story is extremely relevant. With the current state of the world, it is not inconcievable that something like this can happen again. That's why we must remember and face what happpened when it would be easier and less painful to look away.

An early play by Irish playwright Conor McPherson, This Lime Tree Bower was first performed in 1995 and uses three interweaving monologues from young men in a small Irish seaside town to tell a story of coming-of-age, boredom, and crime that will drop audiences into a world they won't ever forget. 7) Paris Opera Etoile Hugo Marchand

Possessing undeniable virtuosity, lyricism, and charisma, Hugo Marchand is perhaps the most famous male Étoile of the Paris Opera Ballet—the highest rank in the most prestigious ballet company in the world.

As curator and lead performer of City Center’s fifth Artists at the Center program, Marchand assembles a program of ballets exhibiting a diversity of styles from George Balanchine and Maurice Béjart to Carolyn Carlson.

The highlight of the program is Maurice Béjart’s Boléro, a tour de force piece for a dancer so special that few artists have been granted permission to perform the work since its creation in 1961. Set to Ravel’s Boléro, Marchand dances an athletic, dramatic solo surrounded by 18 dancers from the Béjart Ballet Lausanne

Marchand also dances a pas de deux with fellow Paris Opera Ballet Étoile Dorothée Gilbert from the seductive, sumptuous Le Parc by Angelin Preljocaj. Inspired by Les Liaisons Dangereuses and set to music by Mozart, Le Parc is a sensual exploration of the way love blossoms through a balance of classical and modern forms. The program also includes Béjart’s The Firebird, performed by Béjart Ballet Lausanne, returning to New York for the first time in 30 years; George Balanchine’s Sonatine with Paris Opera Ballet Étoiles Léonore Baulac and Germain Louvet; Trois gnossiennes with Baulac and Marchand; and a pas de deux from Carolyn Carlson’s Signes with Gilbert and Louvet.

“Saturday Night Live” alum Chloe Troast will write and star in the new theatrical experience PEPPER SLIT: Live in Her Living Room directed by comedian Sam Blumenfeld.

19) The Jack of Hearts Club

The Original Cast Recording of THE JACK OF HEARTS CLUB, the acclaimed new musical by Jon Richardson that became one of the most successful productions in the history of Provincetown Theater, was released on Friday, July 17, 2026, on all major digital and streaming platforms.

The week will also offer a Silent Disco, spotlighting contemporary Mandopop and Cantopop hits with international DJ sets, as well as family-friendly workshops, a Storytime with the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, local Chinese food vendors, and much more to discover.

South Street Seaport Museum announces a day of free activities for City of Water Day on Saturday, July 25, 2026 from 11am–5pm.

Join the South Street Seaport Museum, Waterfront Alliance, and fellow climate-conscious partners for the annual City of Water Day, which provides programs and activities across the region that champion a climate-resilient New York and New Jersey Harbor.



For this special initiative, the Museum joins dozens of communities across all five boroughs, Westchester and Rockland counties, and northern New Jersey who will host events on and near the water that celebrate the importance of a resilient and equitably shared waterfront.

Take advantage of free General Admission to the Seaport Museum throughout the day, which will allow you to explore all of the exhibitions on view, including The Promise of Liberty: Words That Shaped a Nation, and two historic ships at Pier 16.

Bad Counselors, the new feel-good summer comedy is coming to theatres nationwide from Loam Entertainment and Fathom Entertainment July 23-27, 2026. Directed by Chris Dowling and starring Chris Klein (American Pie), the film follows two hard-partying fraternity brothers who pose as Christian camp counselors to complete court-ordered community service, only to find themselves navigating prankster campers, suspicious pastors and unexpected lessons along the way.
