I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Theater Thursday - Friends! The Musical Parody

We were given complimentary tickets to Friends the Musical Parody for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

 What: Friends! The Musical Parody

 Where: The Theater Center
              210 W. 50th St.
              New York, NY

Who: Teens and Up

When: Through September 19,2021

Friends! The Musical Parody is back in New York City for a limited time on its way to a North American National Tour. It is still crammed with references to numerous things about the show that you know and love including guest stars, minor characters, catchphrases, episode plot points, and more. Perhaps, it is a little too crammed with such things particularly in the second act when the majority of the show's ten-year run is covered. The show is still fun though and a real kick of nostalgia for anyone who has ever seen it either during its initial run or in its endless reruns.

In this version of the show, the female performers are much better at capturing the essence of their characters as created by the original stars who played them. The male performers are more disappointing especially the actor portraying Chandler since he portrays a number of other roles as well. His duet with Monica based around Chandler's "Could I be.." catchphrase is still a highlight, however, because he does have a beautiful singing voice.

If you did not or do not let your kids watch the TV show, you will not want them to see this show either. However, if you did let them watch it, this show is no better and no worse in terms of suitability and/or appropriateness for kids. For the rest of us, this show is definitely a nostalgia trip if nothing else.

And that's our view. Tune in Sunday for this week's Sunday Scoop.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Geometric Properties at Artechouse NYC

We were given complimentary tickets to Artechouse for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Geometric Properties at Artechouse NYC

Where: 439 W. 15th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Tweens and Up

When: Through September 6, 2021

Me - Artechouse was very original. It was full of color and light. It was pretty, but it could be a bit overwhelming with all the noise and color and lights. It was also hard to get the app to work. My favorite part was these pictures that turned into other things when you looked through the app. One of them turned into a fireworks display. I really enjoyed that. There was another area where you could move a picture around just by waving your hands over a sensor. It was fun to do but I really didn't understand the point. Also, it was hard. Artechouse was interesting but I would have liked it better if I understood more about it.

Mom - Artechouse is an interactive art installation. The current exhibit at Artechouse in New York City is called Geometric Properties. It was created by the artist, Julius Horsthuis. It is all about colors and shapes and interacting with them and changing them. There are few different aspects to the exhibit and different ways in which to interact with each of them. All of them are full of beautiful colors and interesting shapes mostly geometric except for one section which is a virtual representation of a beverage bar. There are several smaller sections of the exhibit where you can manipulate pictures in different ways. The largest part of the exhibit involves rapidly changing extremely colorful geometric designs that continuously morph into different colors, shapes, and sizes.  It can be a bit overwhelming at times particularly for anyone who has sensory issues especially since there is also extremely loud music playing throughout the exhibit However if that doesn't bother you, you might enjoy this fascinating exhibit. People who crave constant audio and/ or visual stimulation would likely appreciate the exhibit the most.

And that's our view. For more information or to purchase tickets to Artechouse NYC, visit www.artechouse.com/location/nyc. There are also other Artechouse installations in Washington DC and Miami Beach. For more about those go to www.artechouse.com.

Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Safe in My Arms & Music: Lillias White Get Yourself Some Happy

We may have been complimentary copies or access to one or more of any books and/or other products mentioned below for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: Safe in My Arms

Today we are recommending Safe in My Arms by Sara Shepard. Andrea, Ronnie, and Lauren meet at the Welcome Breakfast for their children's exclusive preschool. All of them are hiding big secrets. They each receive a threatening note implying that they and their children aren't welcome at the school. When they break into the school director, Piper's office to try to find out what's going on,  Piper shows up and ends up being attacked.  Andrea, Ronnie, and Lauren are the prime suspects. However, Piper may have been hiding secrets of her own. This intriguing mystery will keep you wanting to read. Even though they are a lot of characters, and there is quite a lot going on, the characters are very well-differentiated, and it's easy to keep track of them all. The characters are unique and interesting. Andrea is a mother who used to be a father, Ronnie is a mother to her own niece whom she kidnapped, and Lauren is a mother who is suffering from a particularly violent form of postpartum depression. The ending has a loose end or two that doesn't make complete sense but is mostly it's satisfactory. Over all, it's a fun read.

Music: Lillas White Yourself Get Happy

Today we are recommending Lillias' White's new album, Get Yourself Some Happy. If you were lucky enough to see Lillias White in her Tony-winning turn in The Life or in one of her many other Broadway roles, you know what a strong beautiful voice she has. She was also the voice of  Calliope in the Disney movie, Hercules among other things. Now, she has put together a new album of Happy Songs literally. The song include Happy Together, Put on a Happy Face, You've Made Me So Very Happy, and more. Of course, not all of the songs have happy in the title. There are also other songs like Accentuate the Positive, The Twist, and more. The album is a mix of show tunes and popular music all sung in Lillias' own unique jazzy style. The album certainly delivers on what it promises as it's mostly full of upbeat joyful songs with a ballad or two thrown in as well. If you don't have enough happiness in your life, get this album and share some of Lillias White's.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

Purchase the album HERE

Tony and Daytime Emmy Award Winner Lillias White has just released her highly-anticipated first solo studio album, 'Get Yourself Some Happy!', out today via Old Mill Road Recording. Described by The New York Times as a “one-of-a-kind performer who combines the sass of a classic blues mama with the skill of a Broadway star,” White is internationally recognized for her glorious voice and extraordinary ability to communicate the heart of a song. Watch White perform “A Little Imagination” HERE.

20) Theater Resources Unlimited
July Panel via Zoom
Building Back Better:
The Cautious Reopening of Not-for-Profit Theater Companies
Thursday, July 29, 2021 at 5:30pm

As part of their monthly series of informational panels, Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) presents Building Back Better: The Cautious Reopening of Not-for-Profit Theater Companies on Thursday, July 29, 2021 via Zoom. The panel speakers will include Chad Austin, artistic director of Abingdon Theatre Company; Debra Ann Byrd, founder and artistic director of Harlem Shakespeare Festival; Frances Hill, founding artistic director of Urban Stages; Ralph Lewis, co-founder of Peculiar Works Project. Reserve a spot on the TRU event page at https://truonline.org/events/building-back-better/ or by emailing TRUStaff1@gmail.com to be put on a list to receive the Zoom link.

As theaters begin to reopen, many theater companies are bringing the lessons they learned during the pandemic with them into the future. They're reevaluating "best practices" to determine what still works and what needs to change, now that the nation is different from when we closed our doors. Moving forward may involve returning to basics: defining and focusing your theater's vision and purpose, creating an infrastructure with clearly defined roles, understanding the purpose of a board and how it can support the success of your company. We will also look at fundraising and audience building strategies, and the importance of branding for attracting supporters. Throughout, our panel will confront the question: How do you balance the tried-and-true with the need for flexibility and adaptability that we have learned the hard way?

Doors open at 5:30pm for networking and roundtable introductions of everyone in the room – come prepared with your best 20-second summary of who you are, and what you need. Panel will start at 6:00pm. Free for TRU members; $15 for non-members. Please use the bright red reservation box here on our web page, or email or phone at least a day in advance (or much sooner): e-mail TRUStaff1@gmail.com / phone 833-506-5550
