I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Theater Thursday: Titus Andronicus and Titanique

We received complimentary tickets to Titus Andronicus for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Titus Andronicus

Where: The Pershing Square Signature Center
             480 W. 42nd St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 17 and Up

When: Through May 3, 2026

Although Shakespearean tragedies are known for their violence and high death counts, Titus Andronicus is widely agreed to be his most violent. This story of a Roman general whose life becomes consumed by violence and revenge also involves rape and cannibalism, among other things, aside from just straight-out murder. Thus, it is extremely inappropriate for young children and anyone sensitive to any of these topics.

However, this does not mean the show is not worth seeing. The role of Titus Andronicus is definitely one that a great actor can really sink their teeth into. Patrick Page, who plays the role in the current production, is such an actor. Although he is mainly known for playing tough characters that show no vulnerability, like Hades in Hadestown, in this role, at times, that tough outer shell gets peeled back, and the character's vulnerability is heartbreakingly on full display. Page's extremely moving performance really makes you feel the character's pain and want to root for him despite his own reprehensible acts.

The rest of the cast is outstanding as well. They really rise up to the level of excellence set by Page. Standouts include Matthew Amendt as Saturnius, who brilliantly straddles the line between sanity and insanity, and Enid Graham as Titus' sister Marcia, a calming presence in the center of all the rage. However,  all of the performances are quite good, making this a show definitely worth seeing.

And that's our view. For more about Titus Andronicus or to purchase tickets, visit  www.redbulltheater.com/titus-andronicus-off-broadway

We received complimentary tickets to Titanique for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Titanique

Where: St. James Theatre
             246 W. 44th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 12 and Up

When: Through July 12, 2026

Titanique is a musical mash-up of the movie Titanic with Celine Dion hits and other songs. Dion herself, as cheekily played by Marla Mindell, leads the proceedings, telling her version of what went down because, of course she was there. Her version is a lot more song- and-dance and a lot less tragic.

Even the iceberg gets in on the action, channeling Tina Turner as an ice queen.  The show is loaded with delightful theatrical and other references. It's just an all-around good time, but not for young children, though, due to strong language and sexual innuendo. If you are interested in a vibey, fun show, this may be just what you're looking for.

And that's our view. For more about Titanique or to purchase tickets, visit https://titaniquebroadway.com.

Tune in Saturday for Still More Theater Saturday.

If you live long enough, you'll get to what is commonly referred to as "a certain age," although the specific age may vary depending on who is doing the referring. In any case, it definitely refers to those who are older and considered to be in the latter stages of their life.

Eleanor Lerman's book, King The Wonder Dog and Other Stories, is a series of stories about people who have reached "a certain age" and are dealing with subjects like loneliness and aging. Although animals factor in every story, they are not central to every story. For more about this book, see our previous post Tips for Tuesday - Books: King the Wonder Dog and Other Stories. Where-To-Go Wednesday: Fonthill Castle

We received complimentary tickets to Fonthill Castle for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Fonthill Castle

Where: 525 E. Court St.
             Doylestown, PA

Who: Recommended for Ages 5 and Up

Fonthill Castle was the home of Henry Chapman Mercer, an archaeologist and tile maker who lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The castle represents an early example of poured-in-place concrete, a technique in which concrete is poured directly into molds to create structural elements including floors, walls, decorative elements, and more. The home is a showplace for Mercer's business, not only in the building itself but also in the built-in furniture and various examples of tiling located throughout the space.

The home is quite large. There are 44 rooms and 200 windows. It is also full of numerous twists and turns, narrow corridors, and many staircases, making it unsuitable for anyone with mobility issues. It is also full of objects and artifacts that Henry Mercer collected on his travels making it unsuitable for young children with grabby hands. There are also numerous books, as Mercer was an avid reader.

If you want to visit this fascinating location, access is only available by guided tour. The tour takes approximately 1 hour. Basic tours are available Tuesday through Sunday, and advance reservations are recommended. Special tours, including a Behind the Scenes Tour,  and other events are periodically held at the castle. The former is a more extensive tour that goes beyond the basic tour. There are also online exhibits for those unable to visit in person.

And that's our view.  For more information or to register for a tour, visit www.mercermuseum.org/visit/fonthill-castle

Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.

Tips for Tuesday: The Book Witch, Still Life: Ten Crime Stories, New York's Coldest Cases, & Yesteryear and Movie: Gandhi: The Power of the Powerless

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any books, products, and/or any other visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: The Book Witch, Still Life: Ten Crimes, New York's Oldest Cases & Yesteryear

Me- I had extremely high expectations for the Book Witch by Meg Shaffer, and while it turned out to be very different from what I expected, I’m happy to report that it still managed to meet them!

The book follows Rainy March, who is, as the title suggests, a Book Witch. As a Book Witch, it’s her job to jump inside books, along with her cat familiar Koshka, and protect their stories from being altered or damaged. Book Witches must follow a strict code, part of which insists that real people and characters cannot fall in love, which is why Rainy has been banned from seeing the Duke of Chicago, the fictional detective from her favorite series. However, when her grandfather and her most treasured book go missing, the Duke is the only person who can help her unravel the mystery.

Rainy was such a great main character to follow. Her love for and devotion to books was deeply relatable to any reader, and she had just about the most enviable job imaginable. On top of that, she just felt real. As for Duke, he wasn’t the most fleshed-out character, but he was so charming and funny that I didn’t even care! Plus, the chemistry between these two was phenomenal! Their banter had me squealing and kicking my feet throughout the entire book. They expressed their love and care for each other so beautifully, and I just loved every moment they spent together.

The plot was also extremely engaging. There were several mystery elements woven in, and while I predicted a few of the reveals early on, several of them truly shocked me. Aside from the mystery, the general concept of being able to physically go inside stories was so cool, and I loved seeing Rainy interact not only with Shaffer’s fictional Duke but also with classic literary characters and settings like Elizabeth Bennett or Wonderland.

Much like Meg Shaffer’s other two releases, The Book Witch is also a love letter to books and reading. It carries a moving and powerful message about books having the power to transport us, change us, and save us. Right now, at a time when books are being banned at an alarming rate, and AI is quickly on the rise, it is a poignant reminder that it is our responsibility to save them too.

The overall tone of this story is largely silly and fun, but it also contains moving themes and emotional moments, and it brought me to tears multiple times. I truly can’t say enough good things or recommend it highly enough. At its heart, this is simply a beautiful story perfect for any reader who has ever turned to fiction at a time when they felt they had nothing or no one else. Through Rainy, Duke, and the incomparable magic of stories, The Book Witch will remind you that as long as we have books, anything is possible and we are not alone.

Mom - Today, I recommend Still Life: Ten Crime Stories by Malin Persson Giolito. This book is a unique and interesting addition to the crime story genre. Even if you are a fan of these types of books, you may be surprised by this one. These are not your typical crime stories. They are more about the psychology of the crime and what makes these specific perpetrators commit them.

Their reasons are more relatable than you might think and often have to do with intangible things like needing to be heard and needing love more so than tangible objects like money. It really makes you think about what drives a person to crime and how not all criminals are just greedy and or straight out psychopaths. This, of course, doesn't excuse their crimes or make them any less tragic, but on the contrary, it makes them even more tragic.

Mom again - Today, I recommend New York's Coldest Cases by David Bushman. This book is more of a traditional true crime book than the previous one. It details ten specific cases of crimes committed in New York City that have never been solved.

Some cases, like the alleged New York Jack the Ripper and the disappearance of socialite Dorothy Arnold, may be familiar to some people. Others, like the murders of almost all the members of the Mourner family on their farm,  and the locked door murder of Isidore Fink, the proprietor of a laundromat, are likely to be unfamiliar to most people.

The book does more than just describe the crimes. It delves thoroughly into the victims' backgrounds and covers all suspects identified and why they were not ultimately charged with the crime. It also offers an insider's perspective not only on the crimes but on the ensuing aftereffects as told through the eyes of the friends and loved ones left behind. If you are a fan of true crime, you should really enjoy this intriguing book.

Mom yet again: Today, I recommend Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke. Natalie Heller Mills is a social influencer who promotes her perfect traditional life with her ideal husband and her six angelic kids on their cosy farm. However, behind the scenes, nothing is quite as perfect as it seems.  There are nannies, farm workers, and modern appliances, and neither Natalie, her husband, nor their kids are as happy as they seem. Then, one day, she suddenly wakes up trapped in 1885, and is forced to live the reality of the life she's been espousing while trying to figure out how she got there, and how to get back to the life she came from.

This is an extremely intriguing book. It is just right for the current day, when some people seem to want to live their whole lives online. It puts a unique and modern spin on the time-travel genre. It is also a kind of speculative fiction that will likely even appeal to those who are not usually fans of that genre but who like historically set novels.

None of the characters is what they seem like on the surface, and they are all hard to root for. Yet, the book is still completely unputdownable and exciting. It is full of surprising twists and turns, and the ending is a complete shocker yet still feels appropriate to the story and not like it came completely out of left field.

Movies: Gandhi: The Power of the Powerless

Today, we recommend Gandhi: The Power of the Powerless. This is a documentary film that traces the roots of Gandhi's peaceful protest movement and its influences on later similar events around the world. They include the United States Civil Rights movement, the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, Lech Walesa's Solidarity movement in Poland, and more.

The film is extremely fascinating and highly relevant to today's world, when peaceful protest is the key to making the changes we need to promote a fairer, more equitable world for all, without bloodshed. Although it is not an appropriate film for very young children, it is a good history lesson for older ones.

And that's our view. Still Life Ten Crimes was published on March 31. The Book Witch, New York's Oldest Cases, and Yesteryear were published on April 7. Gandhi: The Power of the Powerless is available now digitally for purchase or rental.

Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

More Theater Monday - Feltman World's First Hot Dog

We received complimentary tickets to Feltman: World's First Hotdog for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Feltman World's First Hot Dog

Where: Chain Theatre/36th Street Theatre
             312 W. 36th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 14 and Up

When: Through June 14, 2026

Before there was a Nathan's Famous, there was a Feltman's. Charles Feltman is widely recognized as the creator of the hot dog, although some might argue attributing the distinction to others. Not only was he the first to set up a hot dog stand in Coney Island, but the famous Nathan actually worked for him before setting up his own shop.

Feltman's World's First Hot Dog is actor, playwright, and historian Michael Quinn's fascinating account of  the man and his legacy. In this one-man show, the multi-talented Quinn, who also wrote the show, seamlessly takes on a variety of roles, including Feltman and himself.  Quinn actually has a unique and interesting connection to the story. At one point, he was personally responsible for reviving the brand after it had gone defunct. This only makes the story more intriguing.

The show is perfectly suitable for children as there is no objectionable material. It is a good lesson for them as well. It may not be suitable for very young children, however, due to their short attention span, even with a running time of only about one hour. Anyone who likes a show that elucidates a fascinating aspect of history should definitely enjoy this one.

17) Diana Byer Launches Teaching Cecchetti,

Revitalizing Cecchetti Technique
for the Next Generation

Master teacher Diana Byer announces the launch of Teaching Cecchetti online classes, a new channel meant to educate today’s dancers via social media. Through posting engaging and relevant content, Teaching Cecchetti highlights forgotten steps, Cecchetti fundamentals, and teaching methods passed down from Margaret Craske, Diana’s mentor and a direct pupil of Enrico Cecchetti. Since October 2025, Teaching Cecchetti has already garnered 2.7 million views with the help of Alex Angrist, one of Diana’s former pupils.

Curious minds will see the Cecchetti classroom in action, and experienced dancers can revitalize their own training in seconds. Rooted in a rich tradition passed down from Enrico Cecchetti to Margaret Craske to Diana ByerTeaching Cecchetti reframes modern ballet technique through the Cecchetti style, where technique isn’t just an end goal, but a vital tool in shaping thoughtful, expressive artists. The Cecchetti method strikes a balance between structure and expression, focusing on understanding rather than mere execution and skill over raw talent. Diana Byer continues Margaret Craske’s mission to cultivate artistry, musicality, gesture, and skill in the next generation of dancers.
