I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Theater Thursday - Blood of the Lamb & Good Bones

We were given complimentary tickets to Blood of the Lamb for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Blood of the Lamb

Where: 59E59 Theatres
             59 E. 59 St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 17 and Up

When: Through October 20, 2024

Blood of the Lamb is a cautionary tale about what can happen in a world where the lives of unborn children are valued above the lives of the women who give birth to them. Nessa is a pregnant woman who has a miscarriage causing a medical episode on an airplane leading the plane to make an emergency landing in Texas so she can get treatment. However, she finds herself in a small room not with a doctor but with a lawyer who has been assigned to protect the rights of the unborn child. Never mind, the fact that the child has already died and the health of the mother may be at risk.

At one time, this may have seemed like a dystopian scenario unlikely ever to happen in real life. However, in a post-Roe v. Wade world scenarios like this have become a frighteningly distinct possibility.  This a show that can be scarily prescient. It is meant to shock, and it does. It is mean to anger, and it does that too.

Kelly McAndrew is terrific in the role of the lawyer, Val. She manages to make a character that can be considered the villain not completely hateful. Her actions are all business but her tone and facial expressions show that she is not as unaffected by Nessa's situation as she would like. She is a woman clearly caught between her duty to her job and her personal beliefs, and her empathy for Nessa and the impossible situation she has been placed in. Although it isn't explicitly stated in the play, there is likely something in Val's past that makes her relate to Nessa even more than she would like.

Meredith Garretson is good as well in the role of Nessa. She is the perfect every woman placed in an impossible situation not of her own making.  We can easily picture ourselves in her place thrust into an inescapable stressful situation, but in this case, the stakes are heightened because her life could literally be in danger.

This is hard show to watch, In fact, it may be especially triggering for anyone who has ever suffered a miscarriage, had an abortion, or is just very passionate about women's rights.  However, it is an important show with an important message that reminds us to be mindful of where this country is heading. Coming right before the election as it does only increases its relevancy. It reminds us to be careful who we vote for if we want a chance to make the world the kind of place we want to live in.

And that's our view. For more about Blood of the Lamb or to purchase tickets, visit 59e59.org/shows/show-detail/blood-of-the-lamb

We were given complimentary tickets to Good Bones for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Good Bones

Where: Public Theater
             425 Lafayette St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 15 and Up

When: Through October 27, 2024

Good Bones is a show about gentrification. Aisha has no fond memories of her old neighborhood so when she has the chance to work on a project that will improve the neighborhood by bringing in a new community center, she jumps at it. However, not everyone views the neighborhood in the same way. For Earl, the contractor on the home Aisha and her husband are renovating, the neighborhood is home in the best sense of the word. He is wary of the fallout that will incur if Aisha's plan proceeds particularly the displacement of people in the area of the project.

This is another well-written play by James Ijames, a recent Pulitzer Prize winner for Fat Ham. It is extremely balanced and does not favor one side or the other or provide pat easy answers. It is quite thought-provoking and leaves the audience with something to think about that perhaps some of them had never really contemplated before,

This is also a show about people connecting and not letting arbitrary things like class stand in the way of that. Yet, even in the show, an arbitrary line is drawn.  Aisha can invite Earl and his sister to dinner, but still can't fully contemplate how her dream project will affect people like them.

The cast is good overall, but Susan Kelechi Watson particularly shines in the role of Aisha, a woman clearly haunted by the scars of her upbringing. Her silent moment of reckoning at the end of the play is heartbreaking. Even without a word, she manages to portray volumes.

The design crew really did a great job with this show. When you arrive at the theater and see the set all wrapped up in plastic and hear the sounds of construction gradually getting louder and louder as it gets nearer and nearer to curtain time, you are instantly transported to the world of the play. The revelation of the full set which happens later is breathtaking. Literal gasps could be heard in the audience.

If you have been affected by gentrification or you find it triggering, you may want to skip this play, Otherwise, if you like a play that skillfully delves into important issues in a way that makes you think, you'll definitely want to see it.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Jackie Robinson Museum

We were given complimentary tickets to the Jackie Robinson Museum for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own

What: Jackie Robinson Museum

Where: One Hudson Square Building
             75 Varick St.
             New York, NY

Who: All ages

The Jackie Robinson Museum is about much more than just Jackie as a baseball player. This is not to underplay his significance to the sport as not only the first African American ever to play Major League Baseball but also one of the best players to play the game. However, Jackie was also a family man, a soldier, an entrepreneur, and more. The museum celebrates all of the facets of his life.

It is quite comprehensive and includes numerous timelines. It is also very interactive and has a large number of videos and touch screens throughout. Plus there are plenty of pictures, objects, and artifacts on display. They include awards won by Robinson like his MVP award, his Rookie of the Year Award, and more. Other objects on display in the museum include various uniforms, posters, his plaque from the Baseball Hall of Fame, and much more. There are also plenty of pictures objects, and more on display in connection with the other aspects of his life.

It is extremely fun, fascinating, and informative and definitely worth a visit. If you are a history fan, a baseball fan and/or a Jackie Robinson fan, give yourself plenty of time when planning a visit. You're going to need it!

And that's our view. For more about the Jackie Robinson Museum or to purchase tickets online, visit www.jackierobinsonmuseum.org.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: American Scary & House Plants and Their F*cked Up Thoughts

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any books, products, and/or any other visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: American Scary and House Plants and Their F*cked Up Thoughts

Today we are talking about American Scary by Jeremy Dauber. This extremely comprehensive book about the horror genre covers all forms of media from books and comics to streaming shows, video games, and everything in between. It talks about numerous authors, screenwriters, and more some of whom most people have probably heard of like Stephen King and Wes Craven but also many of whom most people are not familiar with. It delves into the specifics of numerous books, TV shows, movies, etc.  Accordingly, there are spoilers so you might want to keep that in mind if you read it.  If you are a fan of horror, you're really going to love this book. Even if if you're not it is still a fascinating read.

Today we are recommending House Plants and Their F*cked Up Thoughts by Carlyle Christoff. Within this snarky missive written as though it was told by the plants themselves is some real information about plants (I would double check on the ediblity before eating any of them, however as the author themselve recommends). Even if you don't care about plants at all, this book is a fun read.

Movies: Spirit of Friendship

Today we are recommending The Spirit of Friendship. This is a nice family film although not for the youngest of children who may be frightened by its subject matter, It is a story within a story about a pair of siblings dealing with the death of their grandfather who are helped by their father's recounting of meeting a man who helped him deal with his mother's death.

Although there are some typical movie cliches, there aren't as many as you would think. It is surprisingly and refreshingly unpredictable in a lot of ways. Plus, it is full of really nice moments of friendship between kids.

The Spirit of Friendship is available for purchase or rental digitally now.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday,

More Theater Monday - Redeemed & What the Constitution Means To Me

We were given complimentary tickets to Redeemed for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Redeemed

Where: 59E59 Theatres
             59 E. 59 St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended For Ages 16 and Up

When: Through October 5, 2024

Chisa Hutchinson's play, Redeemed, revolves around a woman named Claire whose brother was murdered. Now, her brother's murderer, Trevor Barlow claims to be a redeemed man due to being haunted by her brother's ghost. He wants Claire, who works in publishing, to help him publish his book.

The performances in this two-hander are excellent. Elizabeth Sun is very expressive in the role of Claire. Her character gets an emotional workout ranging from anger, disbelief, and sadness to resilience, determination, and confidence. Through it all, she seems so strong that when she has a breakdown it hits the audience hard, and when she finds her strength it's a catharsis for the audience as well.

Doug Harris as Trevor Barlow is the opposite. He's an enigma. He holds his emotions close. You can't tell whether he absolutely believes what he is saying or he is just trying to put one over on Claire as she is initially convinced.

The play is extremely well-written, It is completely riveting and really holds your attention for the approximately 90-minute duration. You feel as if you can't look away for a minute or you might miss something. If you don't mind a show that deals with difficult subjects like murder, racism, and more, and you like a show that really makes think you might enjoy this one.

And that's our view. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit 59e59.org/shows/show-detail/redeemed.

We were given complimentary tickets to What the Constitution Means to Me for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: What the Constitution Means to Me

Where: NBPAC
             11 Livingston Ave.
              New Brunswick, NJ

Who: Recommended for Ages 13 and Up

When: Through October 13, 2024

When playwright, Heidi Schreck was young, she participated in debates regarding the importance of the Constitution and its relevance to her life to earn money for college. What the Constitution Means to Me is her play regarding her experiences and examining whether the document truly does what it is allegedly meant to do and whether we should keep or abolish it. This is something that many people today have very strong opinions about thus, making the show extremely relevant and timely.

In the original show, Heidi played herself. In the current production, she is played by Kate Baldwin. In the first part of the play, Baldwin portrays younger, Heidi. Later she becomes an adult, Heidi. Baldwin does a terrific job with the transition between the two, You really feel as if she has aged right before your eyes.

In the final part of the show, Baldwin plays herself, She engages in a debate with a current high school student regarding whether we should keep or abolish the Constitution. Niara Beckwith and Wobriba Sarpey alternate in the role-playing themselves. The night we attended, it was Beckwith's turn. She is an extremely thoughtful and well-spoken young woman who convincingly made her case for her side of the debate.

This is not an easy show to watch. Several actual court cases are discussed throughout the play the resolution of which may be shocking, angering, or upsetting to most, if not all, people. If you are not feeling good about the current state of the country and the Supreme Court in particular, this show is definitely not going to make you feel better. However, it is an important show that raises an important issue and at the very least reminds us that if we want to make changes we first need to make our voices heard, and to do so, we need to carefully chose the political candidates most likely to listen and heed our voices and exercise our right to vote for them.

And that's our view. For more information or to purchase tickets to What the Constitution Means to Me, visit www.georgestreetplayhouse.org/events/detail/what-the-constitution-means-to-me

Through letters, their bond transcends continents, with Bernie in New Jersey and Mags in England, making them closer than anyone despite the miles between them. They say, “it only takes one,” but it’s tough to find him in New York City, even in the age of dating apps. Just ask Lucy, a singer-songwriter whose self-imposed mission is to meet every guy with a shred of potential. It seems she'll have to slog through 999,999 guys to get to her one-in-a-million. At least she has material for her songs.

When he reunites with old friends, Amir and Lynn, questions emerge about the veracity of the book and its particular patriotic American gaze. Lust, jealousy, and personal politics bring things between old friends to a boiling point, posing the poignant question, "What is the expense of lies—personally and as a country?"

Autobiography is dance in the ballet lineage merged with choreographer Wayne McGregor's genetic code and AI. The work consists of 23 sections of movement material that reflect the 23 pairs of chromosomes of the human genome. The sections are then fed into an algorithm based on McGregor's DNA data, which randomly selects sections to create a new version of the work each time it's presented. Through the layering of choreographic imprints over personal data, McGregor has upended the traditional nature of dance-making to create a convergence of creative authorship. Autobiography is performed by a cast of 9 dancers and set to an original score by Jlin.

South Street Seaport Museum’s monthly Sea Chanteys and Maritime Music program continues aboard the 1885 tall ship Wavertree, Pier 16 (Fulton and South Streets)October is the last month of 2024 that the lively chantey experience will take place outdoors on the main deck of the historic cargo vessel before moving indoors. Starting in November, as the weather cools, this monthly event will transition to a hybrid format, allowing you to enjoy it both in-person at the Museum and online.

This event is free, and registration is encouraged. seaportmuseum.org/chanteysing

Join the monthly sea-song sing along, hosted by a local artist who will lead the group through a variety of traditional maritime work songs and ballads. Throughout the event, attendees of all skill levels are welcome to take the stage for this round-robin where you can sing and share the chantey of your choice. Attendees are encouraged to sing along with the chorus or just sit back and enjoy each performance.

Singers of all levels, as well as listeners, are welcome to participate in this free event. You can lead or request a song during the round-robin or simply listen.

Monthly Family Activity WeekendsSailors Scrimshaw

October 5-27, 2024 from 11:00am-4:30pm

South Street Seaport Museum announces October Family Activity Weekends: Sailors Scrimshaw on Saturdays and Sundays October 5-27, 2024 from 11:00am–4:30pm. Engagement stations may be located indoors at the 207 Water Street program space, or on the tall ship Wavertree at Pier 16 (Fulton and South Streets). Museum staff will be happy to point you in the direction of the weekend’s activity when you check in. seaportmuseum.org/familyactivitywweekends

October 2024: Sailors Scrimshaw

Join the Seaport Museum every weekend in October for an all-ages scrimshaw-inspired activity! Carving and engraving on ivory and bone has been an art form among many cultures throughout the world and throughout history. Scrimshaw in its maritime context was a type of carving on marine mammal ivory, made by sailors on board whaling ships.

Come to the Museum’s 207 Water Street program space––or aboard the tall ship Wavertree if the weather is nice––for an update on this mid-late 19th century shipboard pastime. Using recycled plastic in place of ivory and push pins instead of carving knives, learn this artistic etching technique and take home your very own hand-made scrimshaw items.

This activity is open to all ages, though children under 5 may find etching challenging. For those who prefer not to etch, we’ll provide crayons and a whale tooth printout so everyone can still join in the fun without using sharp objects. Bring the whole family and create something special together!

October Walking Tours

South Street Seaport Museum announces its highly anticipated walking tours for October 2024. From partnerships with Archtober, Open House New York, and Urban Archive to new timeslots for the Sinister Secrets of Seaport tour arriving just in time for spooky season, the Seaport Museum has events all month long.

Archtober 2024 at the Seaport Museum

The Seaport Museum joins fellow museums, cultural organizations, consulates, advocacy groups and parks with the goal of fostering a deepening relationship with the places we inhabit throughout New York City during Archtober. Celebrate architecture and design with in-person guided walking tours and self-guided virtual tours throughout October. seaportmuseum.org/archtober

Typography and Job Printing in the 19th Century Seaport Tour

October 13 | 12pm | In-Person | Bowne & Co. | Free

Claim your space today for this one-of-a-kind in-person walking tour. Most printers in early-19th century New York were located where the action was: near the city’s main port of entry at South Street. Walk with us to learn about the typography on these historic buildings and discover where passenger and shipping services printed their tickets. The tour will be led by the Seaport Museum’s Bowne & Co. Art Director and Operation Manager with a special stop at Bowne & Co. to see printing in action! Advanced registration is required for this free tour. Rain or shine.

Virtual Walking Tours: Seaport Museum x Urban Archives

Anytime | Online | Self-Guided | Free

Take a walk with us, on your own or virtually, and discover the origins of New York’s greatness via Urban Archive, a technology nonprofit that promotes historical research and discovery. You can either come down to South Street, download the app, and follow the walk on your own, or enjoy a virtual tour from the comfort of your own home, anywhere. A selection of “anytime activities” and self-guided tours include street advertising in Manhattan in the early 20th century, the rise of Industry City, the history of coffee consumption in Lower Manhattan, and more.

Open House New York at the Seaport Museum

The 22nd Annual Open House New York Weekend, which promotes unparalleled access to the city – to the places, people, projects, systems, and ideas that define New York and its future – will take place October 18-20. As part of its lineup, OHNY will include three in-depth tours of the 1885 tall ship Wavertreeseaportmuseum.org/ohny

Open House New York: Wavertree Tour

October 20 | 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm | In-Person | Wavertree | $5

The Seaport Museum invites you to take a special guided tour of the flagship of the Museum’s fleet, and you’ll even be able to walk the length of the vessel’s massive cargo hold––not usually open to the public. Built of riveted wrought iron, Wavertree is an archetype of the sailing ships of the latter half of the 19th century that, during the “age of sail,” lined South Street by the dozens, creating a forest of masts from the Battery to the Brooklyn Bridge. Tickets are $5 and will be distributed on a lottery basis by OHNY.

Sinister Secrets of the Seaport

October is also the perfect time to join the Seaport Museum’s 90-minute Sinister Secrets of the Seaport walking tour that will take you on a winding journey that unravels the sinister past of the South Street Seaport Historic District and Lower Manhattan. Created with support from the Alliance for Downtown New York’s Walking Tour

Incubator program, this timely tour will tell the scandalous, spooky, and dubious tales lurking in the cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and waterfront. Throughout this interactive tour, your guide will share historical stories ripped from the headlines of newspapers and publications from the 1790s to the 1990s. seaportmuseum.org/sinister-secrets

St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish, 910 Watkins Street
1700 Block of South 9th Street
No Admission, Open to the Public

Italian festivals have been held at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church for over 100 years.  The parish was established in 1912 by Italian immigrants who wished to maintain a connection to their homeland, and their great spirit of faith, family and tradition has been maintained throughout the decades.  The current-day festival began in 1987 on the occasion of the parish’s 75th Anniversary and has been thriving ever since. The event takes place annually on the first Sunday of October and is held on the 1700 Block of South 9th Street.  It is no charge and open to the public.

Rev. Nick Martorano, pastor of the church, has strived to make it a very special celebration for South Philadelphia.  He said “we wanted to create an opportunity for our entire community, not just our parishioners, to come together and celebrate one of the many diverse cultures that make our neighborhood so great.”  Because of the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the day, this festival has indeed come to hold a special place in the hearts of all the local people and out of town visitors as well.

Keeping with the authentic nature of this occasion, the day begins with a procession at 12:00 Noon honoring some of the iconic saints of the Catholic church who are admired by the faithful and viewed as shining role models.  The statues are carried through the street accompanied by the renowned Verdi Band playing traditional Italian marches.

Following the procession, the festival gets underway with its now famous variety of ethnic food delicacies, fine musical entertainment, rides and games for kids, and more.

Food choices will include authentic Italian delicacies such as Arancini, Broccoli Rabe, Eggplant Rollatta, Escarole and Beans, Meatball Sandwiches, Porchetta Sandwiches, Pizza, Sausage and Peppers, Italian Seafood and Rice, Tripe, a Pasta Station, Italian Cakes and Desserts.  Plus Chicken Fingers, Roast Beef Sandwiches, Wine, Beer and Cordials.
