The Joffrey Ballet arose as dance schools and companies slowly spread throughout the country. However, from the start, this company was different than any other that had come before. They did not focus on a specific choreographer, particular tradition of a dance, or performer. Their dancers did not all fit the stereotypical idea of what a dancer is supposed to look like either. They brought ballet to places it had never been seen before like TV commercials, Halftime shows, and more. They made it more accessible to the masses.
The current exhibit at the New York Library of the Performing Arts, The Joffrey + Ballet in the U.S., extensively explores the history of this groundbreaking company. It explores their path from a pipedream of their founder, Robert Joffrey, to their latest incarnation in their home base since 1995 Chicago. It includes numerous photographs, posters, and more as well as costumes, ballet shoes, masks, and other items. If you are a history buff interested in dance or the performing arts or a ballet aficionado, you will particularly enjoy this fascinating exhibit. However, even if you are neither of these things that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it as well.
