Me - Most people are probably familiar with Will Ferell's Christmas movie Elf. The stage musical based on the beloved film is almost as fun. The songs are good especially "A Christmas Song" which has now become a fairly well-known Christmas song itself. The current version of the show is extremely well-cast. When I heard Grey Henson would play Buddy, I thought he would do a good job. He definitely didn't disappoint. He has the perfect energy and personality for the role. If you're looking for a light, fun time and a good escape from reality go see this show!
Mom - This holiday season if you are in the New York area and looking for seasonal live entertainment, but not interested in another incarnation of A Christmas Carol or The Nutcracker, the Broadway revival of Elf The Musical is a great choice. This family-friendly show is based on the popular 2003 movie of the same name. The musical 's plot sticks fairly closely to the movie's, but you don't have to be familiar with the latter at all to enjoy this delightfully fun show. It's just a cheerful blast of jubilance from beginning to end.
Grey Henson is Buddy the Elf and is perfect for the role. He displays a childlike sweetness and innocence sprinkled with a generous helping of joy throughout the show. Film star, Sean Astin, in his Broadway debut, does a better job as the gruff Mr. Greenway than as Santa, and he is not much of a singer. The rest of the cast are good in their roles but Henson is clearly the standout in addition to the leading player.
The score is satisfying and pleasant. The overwhelmingly holiday-themed songs are mostly gleeful and charming, and at least a handful are quite catchy. The choreography is energetic and exuberant. The show is just an all-around uplifting good time.
