I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Holiday Windows Walking Tour 2024

Here is an overview of this year's annual holiday window displays in New York City. On the whole, they are not very exciting. It's like they are barely even trying. Accordingly, this year we are listing them from worst to first instead of from furthest uptown to furthest downtown or vice versa like we normally do.

Saks Fifth Avenue located at Fifth Avenue between 49th and 50th - Not only do they not have their customary lights and music display, it doesn't even look like they have made an attempt to decorate the windows at all either. There may be a tiny bit of tinsel and/or sparkle but nothing that you can call decorations and it isn't at all festive or fun. Thus there are no pictures here.

Bloomingdales located at Lexington Avenue between 59th and 60th Street - Just because you put a lot of pink and green in your window and call your mannequins Elphaba and Glinda doesn't automatically make your holiday windows exciting and fun. In fact, having the windows labeled Elphaba's gift list and Glinda's gift list definitely takes away from the fun and shows that the whole thing is merely an attempt to get people to buy more by capitalizing on the popularity of Wicked. These windows are all about commercialization. This seems the opposite of what holiday windows used to be or should be.

Macy's located at: 34 Street between 34th and 35th. -  These windows have a similar theme to Bloomingdale's except instead of Elphaba and Glinda promoting their gift list, there are some cute little figures. Plus their windows are a little more whimsical although the decorations are minimal. They also have some fun games to play in the windows around the corner from the main decorations. The games are easy to play, fun, and more in the holiday spirit than a recommended gift list disguised as fun holiday windows.

Bergdorf Goodman located at Fifth Avenue between 57th and 58th - These windows are, by far, the best of the lot. You might want to skip the rest and just come here.  These windows are fun. They are festive. They are colorful. Plus, they actually have a theme that is not directly related to encouraging you to buy more. The theme is A Walking Tour of Fifth Ave, in honor of the 200th anniversary of the street's retail strip. Sure, there are products you can buy in the store in the windows but they aren't the main focus.

Below are a few more decorations from around the City.

And that's our view.  Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.
