I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Where-To-Go Wednesday - The Lilac

What: The Lilac

Where: West St.
             Pier 25

Who: All ages:

When: In the Spring/Summer to Late October

Me & Mom -  The Lilac is the only remaining steam-powered lighthouse tender. Lighthouse tenders are ships specifically designed to maintain and support lighthouses by providing supplies and more. Lighthouse tenders later became coast guard cutters.

The boat is now docked at Pier 25. Free tours are available on weekends generally from late spring until sometime in October. You can take a self-guided tour and learn about the boat and what you see through detailed posted signage. A few of the rooms are set up like they would have been when the boat was in service including the Captain's quarters. If you have questions, there are people around to ask.

Although the tours are free, donations are gladly excepted. They are hoping to restore the ship to its former glory and use it as a tool for teaching people about maritime history as well as a space for history and/or art exhibits and meetings. In fact, the boat currently houses art exhibits.

And that's our view. For more about The Lilac, visit www.lilacpreservationproject.org/

Tips for Tuesday - Books: I Knew You Were Trouble & Misc.: Baebody

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any products, and/or visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: I Knew You Were Trouble

Today we are recommending I Knew You Were Trouble by Pip Fox. Charlie's life is a mess. She's just been dumped, and she's homeless and jobless. Then, she gets a job on a farm, and not one but three guys take an interest in her. Suddenly, her future starts looking much brighter.  Although this book features the annoying trope of a smart girl acting stupid when it comes to men, there is a lot to like about it. Charlie is a kindhearted likable character, and the book is filled with plenty of other kindhearted likable characters as well. There is plenty of found family. There is also some sweet romance although not enough of it. However, overall, it is an enjoyable read.

This book will be released on June 1.

Misc.: Baebody

Today we are talking about BaeBody self-care products. BaeBody makes products that are simple, easy to use, and effective. There are no fancy names here just great products. Their product line includes moisturizer, vitamin C, retinol, eye gel, and so much more. All their products contain 80% natural ingredients and no parabens, sulfates, or phthalates. Plus they are cruelty-free and made in the U.S.

More Theater Monday - Millennials Are Killing Musicals

We were given complimentary tickets to Millennials Are Killing Musicals for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Millennials Are Killing Musicals

Where: Theatre 71
              152 71st St.
               New York, New York

This event ended on May 27, 2023

Millennials Are Killing Musical is a new original musical by Nico Juber. The story revolves around a single mom striving to make her life better while hampered by the fear that she can never do it all as effortlessly as her daughter's classmate Jake's Mom. Then, her pregnant influencer sister, who is at the opposite extreme when it comes to motherhood, arrives. All three women must learn to stop living their lives through filters if they want to live their best, most authentic lives.

The story is extremely relatable in the way we are all just trying to live up to ideals that aren't even real. Just because someone puts it on the internet doesn't make it a true picture of their life, and we are all just going through life trying to hide our messiness from each other. It also has a lot to say about this rapidly changing world where so much of what we have always known is rapidly falling by the wayside.

The songs are extremely fun and many of them are also very relatable. They include songs about when you have a kid you can't even go to the bathroom alone anymore, and how Christmas is the best time of year because you can keep your kids in line with the threat that Santa won't come if they misbehave. There are also other fun but perhaps less relatable songs like one about idolizing Ryan Seacrest and wishing he would put one in a reality show.

Even though this is a show about a younger generation that doesn't mean that there is nothing for older audiences to relate to. The character of Nana Marie remembers a world where so much of what we are told today we must do we did not and so much of what we were told we must not do we did, and yet somehow we survived.

The other main characters are a trio of filters who serve as a Greek chorus. Their exact connection to each of the three main characters is unclear at times as is the difference between the filters which are allegedly supposed to be of different generations. However, that doesn't take away from the joyfulness, hilarity, and truthfulness of this exciting new musical.

23) Burrowes Mansion
300 Years of History Celebration
94 Main St.
Matawan, NJ

The celebrations in honor of the 300 years since the construction of the Burrowes Mansion, only happens once and will include professional reenactors to help retrace and relive the plot and skirmish that took place in June 1778 when the British plotted to capture John Burrowes, Jr. in a surprise raid on the Burrowes Mansion back then.  Much to the Britsh troops' surprise, Captain Burrowes, Jr. was tipped off and able to flee before the British came to the house.  In an effort to make an example of the Burrowes for their continued blatant support of the fight for independence, the British troops burnt down the Burrowes' granaries and warehouses the stored precious corn and corn meal that was supplied to the Patriot troops throughout NJ and into Pennsylvania. Washington and his troops took Burrowes's supplies.  The British also made a point to set on fire, all the interior belongings and furnishings of the Burrowes and place it in a pile out on their property for all onlookers to see warning anyone interested in supporting the cause for independence what they could expect in due turn.

June 3rd will be a day full of activities including the reenactment at 2:00 pm, a colonial encampment in the backyard of the Burrowes Mansion that will open around 9:45 am and include colonial children's games, demonstrations the blacksmith, the wool spinning, weaving, beading will also go on at those booths too. Cannon demonstrations and firing at 3 different times during the day, tomahawk throwing, and colonial gun maker demonstrations will be a part of the encampment experience as well.  Outside Main Street, there will be some setups for photo ops using colonial props, registration for children's scavenger hunt game to get clues to win several wooden coins with different symbols on each one, and historic sites self-guided walking tours and guide books. Hopefully, music will be playing on the street and some food trucks as well will be on site.  Some events are free and others will involve tickets but we haven't finalized those prices yet.  Full information will be going up on the Matawan Historical Society website in the next week or so.

Burrowes Mansion will also be open for tours on both Saturday and Sunday, June 4th.  Sunday, June 4th will continue with everything that was available on Saturday except cannon firings and the reenactment.  But the day will end with a concert by the Matawan High School band performing patriotic songs in the backyard of the mansion.
