Classic Stage Company (Jill Rafson, Producing Artistic Director; Amanda Feldman, Managing Director) is thrilled to announce the CSC Summer Acting Intensive, a new seasonal program offering week-long and two-week-long sessions for students between the ages of 14 – 18 years old. Through this program, students will have an opportunity to work with professional theatre artists to interpret classic plays at a premier Off-Broadway venue. Sessions begin June 24 and run through July 28. Pre-register today by visiting here.
Have you ever wondered how actors interpret texts? This summer, find out by immersing yourself in the words of great authors like María Irene Fornés, Anton Chekhov, William Shakespeare, August Wilson, and more at CSC! Work with professional actors and directors and make classic plays your own on one of Off-Broadway’s most iconic stages. Leave with a ready-to-go audition monologue and the confidence to explore any play boldly and skillfully.

The Centenary Stage Company, a professional theatre in residence on the campus of Centenary University in Hackettstown, NJ, is currently applicants for the 2023 - 24 Artistic Internship Program. Centenary Stage Company is seeking to fill one internship position immediately and a second internship position no later than July 1, 2023. Designed to provide interns the opportunity to explore all facets of the business of theatre, Artistic Interns will be immersed in all elements of theatrical and performing arts production from administrative to performance and production opportunities. The program is geared toward applicants who have completed their undergraduate training and are seeking to bridge the gap between their academic career and the professional industry while providing young artists a place to network and build their early careers. By providing real-world experience in a hands-on, fast-paced environment, the aim of the program is to equip Artistic Interns with a vast array of skills, knowledge, and experience. Artistic Interns will also work alongside and directly with industry professionals, both resident artists and nationally renowned professional guest artists, broadening their network of colleagues.
This is a paid internship with a monthly stipend. Additional per-performance stipends will be available to Artistic Interns participating in the Young Audience Series Touring program. No housing is provided. All applicants should be local with the ability to commute. The Artistic Internship is a yearlong commitment from the start date. Flexible evening and weekend availability as dictated by the CSC 2023-24 Performing Arts Event Calendar is required.
All interns, regardless of specific area of focus, will work closely with CSC staff and gain extensive training in daily operations and management of the business including assisting with marketing, development, fundraising, community and educational outreach, company and production management, patron relations, digital content creation, live stream production, graphic design, social media engagement, web development, and all other administrative initiatives. Artistic Interns will become proficient with Theatre Manager, the ticketing software used widely by performing arts organizations across North America, as well as various other software programs utilized by the organization, including but not limited to; Microsoft Office suite and various Adobe programs such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and After Effects. Although primarily administrative in nature, the program grants performance and/or technical opportunities to candidates interested in those areas of focus.
Performance-focused interns will be granted the opportunity to audition for and, if cast, perform in CSC mainstage productions. Although the internship does not guarantee casting in any CSC mainstage production, it does promise performance opportunities to those interested. Interns with a performance focus, if cast in a CSC mainstage production operating under a standard Actor's Equity Association (AEA) contract, may be eligible to join Actor's Equity Association through AEA's new Open Access Membership Policy. AEA membership is not guaranteed and is fully dependent on the rules and regulations of eligibility set forth by Actor's Equity Association. In addition, interns will be granted the opportunity to perform with the CSC Young Audience Series Touring program and those participating in the touring program will receive an additional per performance stipend.
Stage Management and Technical focused interns will be granted the opportunity to work on both mainstage and touring productions. Interns with this focus will have the opportunity to work in the production shops, rehearsal studios, backstage assignments, assistant director, assistant stage manage, operate light and sound boards, as well as various other production responsibilities as dictated by individual production needs. These interns will have the opportunity to work with resident production staff, alongside guest professionals in lighting, scenery, sound, costume, and with AEA stage managers and actors. These interns will also be granted the opportunity to work with the CSC Young Audience Touring Program and participating interns will receive an additional per-performance stipend.

Award-winning choreographer Daniel Gwirtzman collaborates with award-winning playwright Saviana Stanescu for a piece that explores artificial intelligence, neuroscience and what it means to be human in a digital age. Gwirtzman creates a physical interpretation of Stanescu’s mind-bending text that brings conceptual ideas deep into the human body. The genre of the 45-minute work is dance and lives as a hybridized form, where dance meets theater. The score is primarily text, augmented by previously unheard music composed by the late Jeff Story, the Company’s longtime musical collaborator who passed away unexpectedly last April.
The narrative, accessible piece – an extended duet performed by Gwirtzman and Company dancer Sarah Hillmon – depicts a creator and a product. Which is which? Referencing Frankenstein of Mary Shelley’s imagination, this researcher is a neuroscientist and (unlike Shelley’s scientist), a woman. The narrative follows the presentation of the AI creature, for scholarly and public consumption. Our protagonist has worked for decades to arrive at this moment. The big launch. Experiments and demonstrations are given. What could go wrong?

To Fund Local High School Musical Productions
The eight-time Tony Award-nominated musical KIMBERLY AKIMBO, in partnership with the New York City Public Schools Theater Program, is hosting three New York City public high school show choirs as they make their Broadway debuts on stage at the Booth Theater.
Immediately following the performance, on Thursday May 18, students from Frank Sinatra High School for the Arts (Thursday, May 18) performed a specially-arranged song from the Tony-nominated score of KIMBERLY AKIMBO. The other participating schools, Professional Performing Arts High School (Thursday, May 25) and Talent Unlimited High School (Thursday, June 1) will each do the same on Thursday, May 25, and Thursday, June 1 respectively.
Also, KIMBERLY AKIMBO will launch the Great Adventure Grants, a unique initiative that will fund three local high school musical theater productions next year, helping defray licensing, production, and other costs associated with each school’s upcoming musical.
The initial recipients of this year’s grants are the Denzel Washington School of the Arts in Mount Vernon, NY; the High Tech High School in Secaucus, NJ; and the Pan American International High School in Queens, NY. Each school will receive a grant of $10,000. The Great Adventure Grants, which are being established as an annual initiative, seek to support student theater artists as they embark on the Great Adventure of musical theater.

ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN THEATRE
Concord Theatricals and The Dramatists Guild of America are thrilled to announce the relaunch of their Playwrights Welcome program. This national ticketing initiative asks theatres to offer tickets that would otherwise go unused (free of charge) to playwrights, composers, lyricists, and librettists.
Theatre can be cost-prohibitive to those who create it. Professional dramatists require professional tools; authors of new plays and musicals need to interact with other works, finding inspiration in the craft of their fellow artists, but this expenditure is often beyond their means.
That’s why Playwrights Welcome was developed for Dramatists Guild of America members by Samuel French, a Concord Theatricals company, along with input from other publishing and licensing houses. By providing available tickets (free of charge) to dramatists, theatres and arts organizations can remove cost barriers and share their productions with artists who may not otherwise be able to see these shows.

Two River Theater is pleased to announce its 2023/2024 30th Anniversary Season. This will be the first slate of programming at Two River for new Artistic Director Justin Waldman and Managing Director Nora DeVeau-Rosen. The season kicks off in September with the groundbreaking rock musical Hair, with direction by Craig Noel Award winner James Vásquez (Under a Baseball Sky, American Mariachi) and original choreography by Mayte Natalio (Love in Hate Nation); followed by a world premiere by one of America’s most produced playwrights, Kate Hamill’s (Pride and Prejudice, Little Women) The Scarlet Letter, based on the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, directed by Shelley Butler (Beautiful: The Carol King Musical, A Doll’s House Part 2).
The season continues in the spring with the world premiere of A Thousand Maids, by Two River favorite Tony Meneses (The Hombres, Guadalupe in the Guest Room), which will be his fourth production in Red Bank, directed by May Adrales (Vietgone). Concluding the season will be August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean, the seventh installment in Two River’s commitment to produce each play in August Wilson’s The American Century Cycle. Gem of the Ocean will be directed by San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Award-winner Delicia Turner Sonnenberg (Trouble in Mind, Skeleton Crew), the first woman to direct an August Wilson production at Two River, with performances by Two River stalwarts Crystal A. Dickinson (Clybourne Park, The Trees) and Brandon J. Dirden (Take Me Out, Jitney). The season will also include the well-loved A Little Shakespeare series, this time presenting the comedy Love’s Labour’s Lost, adapted and directed by Tai Thompson (Warriors Don’t Cry).
