I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Pilgrim Hall Museum

We were given complimentary tickets to Pilgrim Hall for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Pilgrim Hall Museum

Where: 75 Court St.
             Plymouth, MA

Who: All ages

Me - Pilgrim Hall was fascinating. They had items and artifacts related to the pilgrims and indigenous tribes. There was a small model of the Mayflower. There was also a model of a Native American home. There was a map that lit up to show the different locations of the battles of King Philip's War. I vaguely remember learning about that in school. There were a lot of paintings. There were objects that actually belonged to the pilgrims and some they brought over on the Mayflower. There was even a piece of Plymouth Rock that you could actually touch Although the rest of Plymouth Rock is nearby, you cannot even get that close to it let alone touch. Seeing objects that used to belong to the Pilgrims and things like that make them seem more real than just learning about them in school and is also more interesting.

Mom - Pilgrim Hall Museum is the oldest continuously operating museum in the United States. It was founded way back in 1820. It is devoted not only to the pilgrims but to the indigenous people of the area as well, mainly the Wampanoag, and it extensively covers the relationship between the two groups

The museum's collection includes William Bradford's bible, a cradle brought over on the Mayflower, a piece of Plymouth Rock (which you can actually touch), and so much more. It is the most extensive collection of pilgrim-related items anywhere.

At the museum, you can learn about King Richard's War, a war that ultimately led to the end of the Plymouth Colony, and you can see an interactive map that lights up to show the progression of the war.  You can view a poster listing all the passengers who traveled on the Mayflower and another one showing all those who still survived after a year. It is shocking how few remained alive even after only one year. You can learn about the true story of Myles Standish, the inspiration for Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, although most of that story bears no resemblance to the true story.

There are numerous paintings including the only pilgrim portrait painted in life as well as a depiction of the first Thanksgiving and more. You can see also see samples of what pilgrim garments really looked like. If you want to immerse yourself in pilgrim history, the Pilgrim Hall Museum is definitely the place to do it.

And that's our view. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit pilgrimhall.org.

Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Winterland & Films: Hollywood Signs

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any products, and/or visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: Winterland

Today we are recommending Winterland by Rae Meadows. This is a haunting novel about the disillusionment of life and making a life when the one you get isn't necessarily the one you want or when you get the one you thought you wanted, but it isn't necessarily what you thought it would be. Young Anya's life is marked by the disappearance of her mother when she was a young child. Then,  she is chosen to train for the elite Soviet gymnastics program. Although it s allegedly a great honor to be chosen to compete for the glory of her country, it is a life full of separation from her family and friends, difficult training methods, deprivation of food, and more. Eventually, she will have to come to grips with whether it is all worth it.

Since the main part of the story revolves around gymnastics,  there is a lot of gymnastics terminology within the book including numerous gymnastics moves that are named but not really described.  Thus, if you don't like or are not that famiiar with gymnastics you probably will not enjoy it. If you do know enough about the sport to stick with it though, it takes a fascinating albeit fictional look inside the harsh Soviet training methods, whether winning at all costs is really worth it, and whether or not you can ever truly win if you lose yourself in the process.

Film: Hollywood Signs

Hollywood Signs is an intriguing look at the world of autograph collecting. From fans who just want the encounter with their favorite stars, to people trying to make a living off other people's names, to those who engage in downright stalkerish behavior in pursuit of their alleged hobby, this film covers it all. The film features numerous stars including Tom Wopat, Eric Roberts, Karan Ashley, and Bruce Campbell as well as clips from quite a few movies and TV shows. Please be strongly advised that is definitely not a  film for children of any age due to inappropriate images shown during a section on Adultcon.

Hollywood Signs is available now digitally and on demand.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory

Truman Capote was a major American voice of the 20th Century. Perhaps best known for his true crime novel In Cold Blood, as well as Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Other Voices, Other Rooms. Capote was a prolific short story writer, and his deeply personal short story, A Christmas Memory was first published in 1956. It's a lyrical story narrated by Capote about two outsiders in a big Alabama home in the early 1930s: an eight year old Truman and his best friend and distant cousin, a quirky, sprightly spinster in her 60s. Through their annual tradition of making fruitcakes together, Truman paints a vivid picture of his early life, sharing the profound need of lost souls to make a connection, even across a generational divide.

Underneath the Skin

UNDERNEATH THE SKIN is based on the fantastical life of Samuel Steward (1909-1993), a gay novelist, tattoo artist, author of erotic fiction, and unabashed carnal adventurer who lived a bold life pursuing his physical and erotic desires through his art. A promising novelist and gifted scholar, Steward left the world of academia to reinvent himself as one of the 20th century’s most influential tattoo artists (aka Philip Sparrow), and as a writer of gay erotic fiction (aka Phil Andros). He attracted the friendships of Gertrude Stein and Andre Gide, was lovers with Thornton Wilder, and had trysts with Rudolph Valentino, Lord Alfred Douglas, and Roy Fitzgerald (aka Rock Hudson). An obsessive self-chronicler, he meticulously recorded his intimate encounters in his “Stud File,” and became an unofficial collaborator at The Kinsey Institute in the 1950s.
