Monday, November 21 The Origami Holiday Tree Opens
The delightfully decorated Origami Holiday Tree is opening to the public on Wednesday, November 21. The theme of this year’s 13-foot tree is Beautiful Bugs, featuring models inspired by the upcoming Susan and Peter J. Solomon Family Insectarium in the Museum’s new Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation. The Insectarium is the first Museum gallery in more than 50 years dedicated to the most diverse—and a critically important—group of animals on Earth. This season, intricate paper models of some of the world’s most amazing insects, including long-legged grasshoppers, brilliantly colored butterflies, and even the spotted lanternfly, an invasive species recently observed in increasing numbers in the New York area, will be showcased among the more than 1,000 origami pieces on view. Origami models of iconic Museum exhibits including the Blue Whale, Tyrannosaurus rex, and Titanosaur will also adorn the tree.

Venus shares many characteristics with Earth and is a proxy for an Earth-like planet, yet we know very little about it. In this Frontiers Lecture, Dr. Martha Gilmore, world-renowned expert on the geology of Venus, discusses the importance of this neighboring planet, her research using data from NASA’s Magellan mission to map the surface of Venus, and what we hope to learn from two upcoming NASA missions, VERITAS and DAVINCI+. Fireman Hospitality Group celebrated the opening of the new Brooklyn Deli in Times Square with an official ribbon cutting on November 17th, (which also happens to be National Reuben Sandwich Day) just in time for the holiday season, with Wendell Pierce, star of Broadway’s Death of a Salesman. Located at 1501 Broadway at the Paramount Building with the entrance on 43rd Street, and as the second Brooklyn Deli location with the original across from Carnegie Hall at 200 West 57th Street, Brooklyn Deli Times Square is 3,460 square feet with 130 seats, serving New York comfort nostalgia dishes including their signature Hot Pastrami Reuben sandwich, hot corned beef sandwiches, Chicken Noodle Soup, Classic Hot Dogs, as well as specialty breakfast items such as Eggface Sandwiches and Artisanal Egg Jars. The Brooklyn Diner partnered with Death of a Salesman as it is one of the season’s biggest hits and they want to share the light of the show and cast. It is the story of a family in Brooklyn, their American Dream, and their belief in it. They debuted their signature Pastrami Reuben, the Willy Loman Reuben in honor of the lead character that Wendell Pierce portrays. In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company established a new dance institute through Zoom, The Bridge. Now, classes are also being offered in person. The Institute’s aim is to bring together dancers, choreographers and directors around the world to experience the master teachers of color whose practices are embedded in the community and are focused on advancing the art of dance that transforms the personal, environmental and metaphysical spaces. Dancers interested in attending the virtual session can join the class by registering here.

The Off-Broadway League today announced that its annual Off-Broadway Toy Drive has begun and will benefit children at the Henwood Family Residence, a NYC Department of Homeless Services family shelter in the Bronx. Last year over 600 toys were donated. This year’s goal is to raise at least 800 presents for kids aged six months to 18 years old. A limited number of tickets for playwright Adrienne Kennedy’s Ohio State Murders will be available via digital lottery through Telecharge at rush.telecharge.com. Entries for the Ohio State Murders digital lottery start at 12 AM, the day before the performance, and winners are drawn the same day at 9 AM and 3 PM. Winners may buy up to 2 tickets at $54 each. The number of tickets offered for each performance is subject to change.
In-person rush tickets will be available at each performance of Ohio State Murders when the box office opens the day of the performance. Ten (10) tickets will be available each day for $39 per ticket. The James Earl Jones Theatre box office is open Monday through Saturday 10am-6pm.

Comedian Anthony Rodia makes his State Theatre debut with The Road Rage Tour! A first-generation Italian-American born and raised in Westchester, NY, Rodia came out of the womb making people laugh. In his 20s he tried a few open mics, but ultimately took a different career path as a finance manager of a luxury car dealership. In 2019, Rodia returned to comedy and left his day job to become a full-time stand-up comic. He hit the ground running and performed 100 shows in just nine months, and within three years Rodia has gained a massive fan base online and around the country.

The Tank (Meghan Finn, Artistic Director; Johnny G. Lloyd, Director of Artistic Development) announced today their new rehearsal space The Attic @ The Tank, which consists of five rehearsal spaces on the sixth floor of their current location on 36th Street in Midtown Manhattan (312 W 36th St, New York, NY, 10018).
The Attic will be provided to artists who are presenting work at the Tank for up to fifteen hours of free rehearsal space per project, in addition to the free performance space The Tank already provides. The Attic rehearsal spaces are also available for rental, with subsidized rates for non-profits and independent artists.
The largest space in The Attic is a 1,150 square foot dance studio with sprung floors, windows, mirrors, a small kitchen, no pillars, and 10’ ceilings. The four other rehearsal spaces measure 21’ x 18’, 17’ x 15’, 18’ x 13’ and 18’ x 17’ with 7’ ceilings; three have windows. The 6th floor is equipped with restrooms, windows, heating, and air conditioning. The Tank will provide basic sound equipment in all spaces at no additional cost. The Tank serves over 2,500 artists every year on their two stages and this expansion creates a new space to grow and deepen that community. Presented with Black Trans Femmes in the Arts Collective
A legend within the ballroom community, founder of the Kiki House of Juicy Couture, leader of The House of Balenciaga, and this year’s Latex Ball Avis Penda’vis Angel Award winner, Black trans femme choreographer Courtney Washington Balenciaga creates dances that are a representation of resiliency, and which foster community in under-resourced areas of Brooklyn. Her new Works & Process commission, ALL INCLUSIVE AND MORE fuses street dance, street jazz, ballroom, vogue, and hip-hop. Informed by her own experience as a queer teenager who found refuge from teasing in dance, the work conveys how her gender transition spurred transformative emotional, creative, and physical liberation. An expansion of ALL INCLUSIVE, which was commissioned in 2020 and performed in the Guggenheim’s rotunda as performances were reopening in New York on March 31, 2021, this latest work furthers her ambitions toward shaping a more inclusive, fair, representative, and colorful world.
In conjunction with the Guggenheim’s Member Mondays, this performance in the theater will continue into the rotunda for The Masterz Ball with music by DJ Byrell. All audience members are encouraged to participate in the ball, with categories including All Inclusive, Best Dressed, and Creative Expression.
