I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Theater Thursday - A Sign of the Times

We were given complimentary tickets to A Sign of the Times for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: A Sign of the Times

Where: New World Stages
             340 W. 50th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 11 and Up

A Sign of the Times is a new jukebox musical that takes place in the 1960s, and its score is filled with well-known music from that time period as well. I Only Want to Be With You, These Boots Are Made for Walkin',  and Downtown are only a small sampling of the decade's popular songs that are a part of the musical's soundtrack. On the whole, the songs are quite fun. The voices are good in general, but the the two leading ladies, Chilina Kennedy and Crystal Lucas Perry really stand out in that department. Although they do nicely with all their numbers each has her particular powerhouse number. For Perry, it's Rescue Me, for Kennedy You Don't Own Me.

Aside from the songs, the over-the-top dancing and psychedelic colors constantly remind you that you are in the 60s. As does the plot which revolves around the push for change specifically for more equality between the races and the sexes. The two leading characters are admirable feisty strong independent women. Thus, it does not make any sense when one of them immediately falls for her sleazy boss who clearly only wants to make her his latest conquest, and this is after she smartly steers away from several other potential bosses who clearly only wanted the same thing. Although he may be a little more polished than the others, it is evident from the start that he is not that different. Therefore, it doesn't make sense that a smart young woman would fall for him, and the fact that she does takes away a little from the enjoyment of the show.

It is also kind of depressing that the show reminds us how little we have come in the past five decades or so and how some people are trying so hard to set us back even further. However, if you just dwell on the catchy pleasant songs and listening to the beautiful voices and don't think too hard about that or plot points that don't make sense, you can still enjoy this mostly fun show.

And that's our view. For more about A Sign of the Times or to purchase tickets, visit yorktheatre.org/asignofthetimes.

Tune in Saturday for Still More Theater Saturday.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - The Underground Art of the New York City Subway Station

What: The Underground Art of the New York City Subway Station

Where: Various locations throughout New York City

Who: All ages

There are over 400 subway stations in New York City. In 1985, the MTA began commissioning art in subway stations. To date, numerous stations have been beautified with the addition of a wide array of works of art in different styles. There are paintings, mosaics, sculptures, and more. There are works of art depicting poetry, people, animals, and more as well as numerous examples of abstract art.

Some specific artworks that can be found in the New York City Subway System include:

Fred Dana Marsh's Marine Grill Murals can be found at Broadway/Nassau Street at the Fulton Street Station.

Chuck Close's Mosaic Portraits can be found at the 86th Street Station

Ming Fay's Delancy Orchard can be found at the Jay St./Metrotech Station at Borough Hall.

William Wegman's Stationary Figures depicting his two Weimaraners in mosaic can be found at the 23rd St. Station.

Lee Brozgol's Greenwich Village Murals can be found at the Christopher Street/Sheridan Square Station. Nine elementary school students from the Greenwich Village School participated in the creation of these murals which depict various Greenwich Village-related sites, locations, and historic figures.

These are just a small sampling of the works of art that can be found underground in the New York City Subway System. For more about New York City Subway Art, visit www.nycsubway.org/perl/artwork We hope to bring you more in future posts as well.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: The Rumor Game & The Aardvark Book Club & Movies: Tribal

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any books, products, and/or any other visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: The Rumor Game & The Aardvark Book Club

Today we are talking about The Rumor Game by Thomas Mullen. This is a surprisingly timely novel even though it takes place during World War II. It is all about hatred, antisemitism, racism, and the spread of hatred and misinformation. Anne is a reporter who writes a column for a newspaper dispelling rumors. She runs into Devon, an old acquaintance from her neighborhood who is now an FBI agent.  He is investigating a murder case that may involve stolen munitions and more. When their cases intersect, they limitedly begin to work together despite their mutual distrust. They also develop a personal relationship even though their mutual mistrust never really goes away.

This book raises some important questions. First of all, how far is it okay to bend the rules during wartime? Secondly, does family loyalty really trump all no matter the circumstances?

The book has a quite interesting but rather complicated plot with numerous characters. Accordingly, it is often hard to keep track of who is who and what exactly is going on. Most of the characters are extremely morally ambiguous even the two main characters. While Anne and Devon's tenaciousness and seeming desire to get to the truth and see justice served are admirable, their willingness to take unnecessary risks and bend the rules to suit their needs is not. However, their less admirable traits do add to the excitement of the story.

If you are looking for a book that plays like an action movie, this one definitely fits the bill. However, if you are in it for the romance, you will probably be disappointed.  On the whole, the story is intriguing and remains interesting throughout. but even though in the end the mystery is satisfactorily resolved, some parts of the ending are not as satisfactory.

Today we are recommending Aardvark Book Club. If you are a voracious reader looking for a great way to accumulate a lot of books at a low cost, you might want to check out Aardvark. For a monthly cost of $17.99 ($25.99 Canadian), you can choose up to three books each month from a specially curated catalog of books. The books will be delivered right to your door. They are available in a variety of genres including contemporary fiction, literary fiction, thriller, mystery, historical fiction, romance, and more.

Our sample box contained the above-pictured books. Other recent book choices have included The Clinic by Kate Quinn, The House of Last Resort by Christopher Golden, and A Love Song for Ricki Wilde by Tia Williams.

Five or six new releases are offered in each genre every month. You can also find a list of previous monthly choices on the Aardvark Book Club website. In addition to your monthly choices, you can choose up to two additional books from any month for $9.99 each. With the average price of a hardcover book hovering somewhere in the $25 to $30 range, you simply can't beat these prices. Accordingly, if you looking for an inexpensive way to feed your book-buying habit, you are definitely going to want to give Aardvark Book Club a try.

Movie: Tribal

Today we are talking about Tribal. This documentary shows what life is really like for soldiers during and after their service time through a look at the experiences of three soldiers as told in their own words. Their heartwrenching accounts are quite detailed and include frank discussions and/or descriptions that may be triggering for some people of among other things soldiers being killed or gravely injured in battle and/or committing suicide. However, if you can handle it, it's an important film that reminds us of the bravery and heroicness of our military members and what poor job we do of helping them process their experiences and transition back to civilian life in a mentally healthy way.

Tribal is available now digitally for purchase or rental.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

More Theater Monday - The Christine Jorgensen Show

We were given complimentary tickets to The Christine Jorgensen Show. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: The Christine Jorgensen Show

Where: 59E59 Theatres
             59 E. 59 St.
             New York, NY

Who: Ages 16 and Up

When: Through March 3, 2024

Christine Jorgensen was one of the first transgender celebrities. She was one of the first people to have what was then called sex change surgery and is now called gender reassignment surgery. At first, she wanted to keep her surgery private and live a quiet unassuming life. However. when word leaked out, it became impossible for her to make a living except in the public eye so she transitioned into a performer. The show is the story of that transition and of the man who helped her make it, Myles Bell, a former song-and-dance man himself.

Jesse James Keitel shines in the title role in a performance that is equal parts plucky and poignant. The character's struggle to live life on her own terms in a world that doesn't want her to makes the show extremely relatable and timely. Mark Nadler is affecting as well in the role of the washed-up song and dance man who clearly is not ready to hang up his dancing shoes no matter what nature is telling him. The opportunity to see him show off his delightful tap skills is a highlight of the show as is Keitel's journey from an untalented novice to a seasoned performer in the role of Christine. The two have a nice chemistry, and the gradual development of their friendship is heartwarming. The show has some nice original songs as well which were in reality co-written by Bell (along with Donald Steven Olsen) and are charmingly sung by Keitel. All in all, the show is quite moving and pleasant.

Habit Formed is an evening-length work that will premiere at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center as the company's 24th Annual Performance Season. The piece explores how habits are created and broken in our lives. These habits can manifest strength, ease, and freedom and also create limits, boundaries, and affliction. The piece is set in a world of shifting physical structures (cages, netting, rocks) embodying the delicate balance between the growth potential and entrapment of habitual action. The piece lingers between the comfort of routine and the desire for change, as dancers break away from established patterns and embark on solo journeys of self-discovery.

Habit Formed weaves fluid, sensuous movements with sharp, distinctive gestures. The ensemble of ten dancers move from moments of synchrony to disruption, illustrating the tension between conformity, individuality, and the struggle to break free from ingrained patterns. The piece traverses a spectrum of emotions associated with habits, from euphoria to restlessness to liberation. From the shackles of habit to symphonic moments of self-awareness and agency, the dancers face personal change and the potential for transformation. The ultimate journey of the work is a story of discernment, unpacking how we can be empowered by intentional habits and not impaired by them. Habit Formed includes Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre's company dancers, scenic design by Rob Dutiel and Anna-Alisa Belous, costume design by Anna-Alisa Belouw, lighting design by Dan Ozminkowski, and sound design by Joel Wilhelmi.

RYAN RAFTERY: THE TITANS OF MEDIA TRILOGY opens Tuesday, February 27, and runs through Thursday, March 14. The Anna Wintour musical will be performed on Tuesdays, the Martha Stewart musical on Wednesdays and the Kris Jenner musical on Thursdays. RYAN RAFTERY IS THE MOST POWERFUL WOMAN IN FASHION - THE ANNA WINTOUR MUSICAL
Tuesdays, February 27, March 5, & March 12
She has sat at the top of a $300 billion industry for twenty-six years. Her power and influence cannot be denied. But when she places Kim Kardashian and Kanye West on the cover of her magazine, the backlash is harsh and for the first time, her credibility is called into question. Through popular music and an astounding measure of creative license, “one-man musical juggernaut” (NY Daily News) Ryan Raftery returns to Joe's Pub to tell the story of a fateful day in the life of the most powerful woman in fashion.

THE RISE AND FALL (AND RISE) OF MARTHA STEWART
Wednesdays, February 28, March 6, & March 13
"The Rise and Fall (and Rise) of Martha Stewart" tells the fascinating story of the woman who changed the way we live our lives by daring us to try harder. From her humble beginnings in Nutley, New Jersey to her empire-building years in Westport, Connecticut, to her highly-publicized stint in federal prison, this is a chronicle of epically blind ambition set to the music of artists as varied as Beyonce, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Adele and Metallica.

MOTHER OF THE YEAR - THE KRIS JENNER MUSICAL
Thursdays, February 29, March 7, & March 14
Mother of the Year finds Kris Jenner desperate for more kids to schill, so she travels to Laos for an experimental fertility treatment. Something goes wrong and she’s afflicted with temporary amnesia and is forced to stay in Laos to be re-educated about the role she’s played in creating “The Kardashians” as we know them. Then, she finds out that the experiment actually worked and she’s pregnant at 67 with a girl! However, now that she has new clarity on her parenting choices, she considers whether or not she wants to continue the pregnancy. But UH OH! Roe v Wade has been overturned during her stay abroad, which galvanizes the "New Kris" into using her family’s 1.2 billion followers to do something good for women everywhere and help get the law reinstated. And it’s a musical!!!
