I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

1) The Further Adventures of Nick Tickle

Ol' Granny Possum is back entertaining us with her slightly irregular version of "Snow White and Just the Two Very Tall Little People" when she is kidnapped by Bluebeard and his band of scurvy pirates! Thank goodness, Nick Tickle has been hired to get her back. Along with Puss-in-Boots, our dauntless heroes try to outsmart the kidnappers and save her - or is she gone for good?

2) Deadly Stages

Deadly Stages tells the tale of Broadway legend Veronica Traymore as she takes a desperate stab at securing her next smash hit. She thinks she found it in Anthony Arlo's new show, until murder makes its entrance! Will her new show arrive to the Great White Way for her coveted Opening Night, or will it be curtains for her? Paying homage to the classic (and not so classic) backstage films of the 40's and 50's when Hollywood was looking to Broadway for inspiration, the timeless whodunit genre is reimagined and turned on its side in a fast paced, fun and funny tribute to this golden age in entertainment. Each playing multiple roles, who in our cast of six will kick the bucket, and who will carry on? Join them to find out, as all will be answered for those who survive Deadly Stages!

3) Five the Parody Musical

Look out SIX, here comes FIVE: The Parody Musical. Henry VIII and his six wives had nothing on Donald, the 45th, and these five ladies. Poised to make America laugh again, FIVE is an irreverent musical comedy revue starring some of the women in the life of America’s past (and hopefully not future) President. Ivana, Marla, and Melania are joined by crowd favorite Stormy and daddy’s girl Ivanka as they each take the spotlight and sing their hearts out for your vote.

4) Le Patin Libre in Threshold Al Fresco

Le Patin Libre pushes the boundaries of traditional figure skating and put their own “spin” on the sport. Their style evolved to become what many now call “contemporary dance on ice”. Le Patin Libre was founded in 2005, by Alexandre Hamel, then a competitive figure skater. The first performances were modestly offered on frozen ponds, during winter carnivals organized by most cities and villages in Québec. On some nights, Hamel and his companions rented hockey ice arenas and turned them into wild dancing parties. Le Patin Libre developed its unique style based on the choreographic possibilities of glide. Glide allows the human body to move through space while being liberated from walking, running, crawling and other natural gestures.

2/15, 2/20, 2/21

5) The Parliament of Poets

Thirty years in the making, The Parliament of Poets: An Epic Poem by Frederick Glaysher, takes place partly on the moon, at the Apollo 11 landing site, the Sea of Tranquility. The Parliament of Poets sends the main character, the Poet of the Moon, on a Journey to the seven continents to learn from all of the spiritual and wisdom traditions of humankind. On Earth and on the moon, the poets teach a global, universal celebration of life, celebrating our common humanity uniting us all. In a world of Quantum science, Apollo, the Greek god of poetry, calls all the poets of the nations, ancient and modern, East and West, to assemble on the moon to consult on the meaning of modern life.

7) The Tiger's Bride

Part theater, part circus, part haunted house, and fully immersive, THE TIGER’S BRIDE invites you to be a guest at the wedding night of Gilles de Rais, aka Bluebeard. For the big event, the entire building at the cell has been transformed into Chateau de Rais — Bluebeard’s castle. His 4-story, foreboding home is open to explore and discover while guests help the new bride unlock his secrets and are entertained by his mysterious staff.

THE TIGER'S BRIDE is filled with death-defying acts of valor, sensual supplications, and around every corner: intrigue. THE TIGER'S BRIDE illuminates classic fairy tales through the eyes of maligned protagonists as they rewrite their own stories, dragging our darkest desires into the light. Guests should come prepared to immerse themselves in a different world, from a different time, but be ready for a devilish dance with lovers and friends in a haunted realm of evil deeds.

12) This Valentine's Day Week, Flushing Town Hall to Present a Puppetry Love Story

About the Power of Kindness

Featuring a family-friendly performance of "Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch" by the world-class Axis Theatre

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Flushing Town Hall will host the award-winning Axis Theatre for a heartwarming performance of Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch on Saturday, February 17. Children and families are invited to sign up for a hands-on shadow puppetry workshop prior to the performance.

Based on the popular children’s book by Eileen Spinelli, the British Columbian Axis Theatre from Vancouver presents the story of Mr. Hatch, who lives a colorless and ordered life. He goes to work at the shoelace factory, eats his lunch alone, reads the paper, and then goes to bed… early. Until one Valentine’s Day, he receives the biggest surprise of his life: a candy-filled heart with a note that whispers, “Somebody loves you.” Mr. Hatch’s world is turned upside down, and he begins to make friends and enjoy all the fun parts of life he once ignored. Audiences of all ages are invited to join Mr. Hatch as he searches for his secret admirer and enjoys the biggest surprise of his life as this touching puppet play examines the effect that kindness can have on a dreary existence.

Prior to the 2:15 PM performance, cast members of Axis Theatre will host an introductory workshop into the world of shadow puppetry at 1 PM. Participants will learn how to design and build their very own shadow puppets and how to physically play with them on stage or on a shadow screen. This workshop is designed for young people who want to play, have fun, and learn new creative skills in a supportive environment.

Tickets for the 1:00 PM workshop are $5 for all (please note that space is limited). Tickets for the 2:15 PM family show are $15 for adults and $8 for children. This show is recommended for ages 3 & up.

IN RESIDENCE AT PLAYWRIGHTS HORIZONS

JUNE 2024

The Movement Theatre Company (TMTC) ( Deadria Harrington, Eric Lockley, Ryan Dobrin and David Mendizábal, Producing Artistic Leaders) announced today the line-up of special events, readings and residencies that will take place this spring.

“Our spring programming feels like a return to our roots and to Harlem,” shared Producing Artistic Leader Deadria Harrington. “The early days of The Movement focused on developing herculean new works and plays at their earliest stages and hosting one-night events that showcase artists of color in innovative ways while uplifting our community. Mainstage productions are so important, but it all starts here, with a glimmer of an idea for a piece or a new collaboration that’s forged when artists work together in unexpected ways.”

The spring will include two presentations of new work commissioned for The Movement’s Ladder Series, each with the support of The Black List and New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). Programming will also include two one-night-only special events.

“The Ladder Series was created to guide artists to be ambitious, courageous and authentic in their exploration of a new idea. Creating something new can be very vulnerable and The Movement provides tools, resources and insights for artists to flourish in the midst of development through an artist-driven process,” stated Eric Lockley, Producing Artistic Leader and Ladder Series Artist. “Working on my Afrofuturistic triptych Sweet Chariot via The Ladder Series allowed me to approach a bold new vision for the stage with step-by-step support. Whether it was space, dramaturgical insight, permission to play, or encouragement to be ambitious, The Ladder Series stands as an example of an investment in the artist and their uninhibited creativity.”

Full details for these readings are as follows:

Walk-In

By Marco Antonio Rodriguez

Commissioned by The Black List

February 23rd at 3pm

Sharp Theatre at Playwrights Horizons

Forced to return home after the sudden death of his estranged mother, a man's already chaotic life attracts further upheaval when he discovers he can time travel back to moments of his childhood when wearing her vintage clothing. Walk-In is an unhinged, irreverent, unapologetically Queer-Caribbean dramatic comedy about generational trauma, the collateral damage that arises when we run from our truth and the quest to learn from and forgive the past through the arduous yet necessary journey of self-forgiveness.

The cast will include Nicole BetancourtAnthony Lee MedinaSophia RamosSuni ReyesAngela ReynosoDenzel RodriguezJennifer Sánchez and Martín Solá. The stage manager will be Andie Burns.

Playwright Marco Antonio Rodriguez shared, “The Movement has given me a sacred space of artistic integrity, support and community that I've always craved but never thought I would find as a Queer, bilingual, Latiné artist who has mostly been on the fringes of the business. No idea is too big on this blessed playground and no thought is too wild.”

This reading is open to the public with advance registration. Tickets can be reserved by visiting: https://forms.gle/wTEB4DjsFYebPbdFA .

Tamago

By Sam Hamashima

Commissioned with the support of the New York State Council on the Arts

In Residency with The Movement at Playwrights Horizons

June 2024

Sam Hamashima’s NYSCA Artist Commission Grant new play たまGO or Tamago is set in 2050, in a world of fluid identities where plastic surgery is now so advanced that changing “skins” is an easy month-long series of appointments with a surgeon. This new play explores the nuances of race, culture and identity in a futuristic exploration of the phenomenon of “Dolezalification” (referring to Rachel Dolezal), cultural appropriation, and the dangers of whiteness as a cultural “norm.”

Playwright Sam Hamashima shared, “Theater changes quickly, and The Movement keeps up with the pace. A disruptor in process and an innovator in spectacle, The Movement challenges me to make even bolder, brighter theater.”

Artwork by Henri Matisse and others

Henri Matisse helped to revolutionize the visual arts in the first decades of the 20th century with daring experiments in a technicolor style that changed the course of French painting. In the same era, his compatriot Claude Debussy was rejecting classical German musical tradition, developing his own style of harmony and orchestral coloring that would strongly influence a wide range of composers for years to come. His expressive Images, which evokes English, Spanish, and French cultures, exemplifies the composer’s explorations in color and texture.
