The recently ended Pride House was presented by TSOS (The Other Side of Silence), the oldest and longest-producing LQBTQ+ theater company. The show revolved around a house on Fire Island's Cherry Grove circa 1938 wherein Beatrice Farrar's hosting of her gay ex-husband and his friends did not sit well with their more conservative neighbors. Then, an extremely destructive hurricane changed everything.
The show was sharply written and bitingly funny with strong found family vibes. Jaime Heinlen was fierce in her portrayal of Beatrice, the group's honorary den mother. Some aspects of the plot were not adequately explained like the presence of two young children staying at the home who didn't belong to any of the inhabitants. The children were adorable though and terrific little performers. Perhaps the playwright's idea was to contrast the neighbor's fear that the presence of the home's inhabitants was going to corrupt the children of the town with the fact that these two children were actually staying in the home and seemingly doing fine. However, anyone who could learn something from that is probably not the kind of person who would go to see this show anyway.
And that's our view. For more about TSOS go to www.tososnyc.org/pride-house.
