I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

A)Beginning Performance

In New Jersey

1) Esspy

ESSPY is a comic-drama about a young medical student embarking on a journey he never expected. Although William is intellectually at the top of his class, he soon discovers that knowledge of science is only one ingredient in caring for a patient. While adept at making clinical diagnoses, intimate human interactions confound and bewilder him, until he encounters Anu, a young woman working in the Patient Simulation program. The play follows their sessions over several years as it moves toward a profound and poignant climax, and poses the question – can empathy and compassion ever be taught.

In New York

2) A Poster of the Cosmos

A POSTER OF THE COSMOS introduces us to a man delivering a statement during a police interrogation for an unknown crime. The story delves into the intricacies of the human experience, exploring the depth of emotions, relationships, and the challenges faced by individuals. As his memories unfold, the play becomes a powerful exploration of love and commitment in the face of adversity.

Part of a compelling evening of one-act plays by the celebrated American playwright Lanford Wilson (for more see The Moonshot Tape below). In these monologues, Wilson intricately explores themes of love, human sexuality, and the profound impact our surroundings and relationships have on shaping our identities. The plays are a poetic and cataclysmic journey, unraveling inward, chaotic, and exhilarating truths that resonate on deeply personal and universally relevant levels.

PLEASE NOTE CONTENT ADVISORY: both plays encompass mature and intense themes such as graphic language, sexual violence, illness, and death. Viewer discretion is advised, and individuals are encouraged to consider their comfort levels and preferences before attending.

3) The Assassination of Julius Caesar as Told By William Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw

The play is adapted and directed by Eric Tucker from Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare and Caesar and Cleopatra by George Bernard Shaw. Tucker’s adaptation will be an in-depth examination of the character of Julius Caesar by combining Shakespeare and Shaw’s character as one. Caesar’s journey from Alexandria to Rome, from beloved, charismatic leader to a perhaps mistrusted tyrant will be especially potent in this election year.

West End Theatre (263 W. 86th St.)
2/24 - 3/17

4) The Moonshot Tape

In THE MOONSHOT TAPE, Diane, a successful writer, returns to her hometown to assist her aging mother. Diane responds to questions from an unseen interviewer, whose presence is only hinted at by a persistent tape recorder. The play weaves a poignant tale of self-discovery, revealing the complexities of Diane's life, marked by loss, emotional turmoil, and the indelible impact of her upbringing.

Part of a compelling evening of one-act plays by the celebrated American playwright Lanford Wilson (for more see The Moonshot Tape below). In these monologues, Wilson intricately explores themes of love, human sexuality, and the profound impact our surroundings and relationships have on shaping our identities. 5) Nicole Travolta's Doing Alright

Doing Alright is a lively and unique account of Nicole’s life as a compulsive shopper who freed herself from debt and shame (and the weight of a famous last name) by a bizarre, real-life journey through the world of spray tanning. Surprisingly, it was a job she loved, and her impressions will introduce some of the eccentric characters she met to her audiences. Through humor, Travolta lightens issues such as debt, depression, divorce, addiction and female empowerment—all of which she has experienced first-hand. And she tells how this journey helped her find herself once more.

6) Three Scenes in the Life of a Trotskyist

Three Scenes in the Life of a Trotskyist traces the forty-year story of Lev Trachtenberg from idealistic youth to hard-core reactionary. We first meet Lev in 1939 as a leftist firebrand at City College. But after finding himself on the other side of the picket lines in the campus rebellions of the 1960s, he finds himself zealously embracing the Reagan Right. This horrifies his one-time comrades, who wonder: has Lev abandoned his old ideals, or held onto them too tightly as the world around him changed? Three Scenes is a play about politics, literature, and the corrosive power of success in America.

Seen through the eyes of his older self, his adventure becomes a poignant reminder that if you choose the ride, life can begin again at any age.

14) Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre

Choreography Workshop

Habit Formed Motifs and Structures

February 21, 2023 at 2pm

BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center

Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre announces a choreography workshop based around the motifs and structures of Habit Formed on February 21, 2023 at 2pm at The BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, located on the campus of the Borough of Manhattan Community College, 199 Chambers Street, New York, NY 10007. For more info on the workshop, visit https://tribecapac.org/event/amanda-selwyn-dance-theatre-workshop. For CUNY students interested in participating in the workshop, please email marketing@tribecapac.org.

In this choreography workshop, Selwyn and her company of dancers will introduce some of the over-arching movement motifs that weave throughout Habit Formed. Then, she will guide students to develop short choreographic studies that explore these motifs and add their own nuance, musicality, and point of view. Students will share their creations and collectively, we will explore how these different studies can be combined into different patterns to create a larger work of choreography. Students should come prepared to move, to be creative, and to collaborate with one another.

The workshop is in anticipation of the world premiere of Habit Formed, which will take place March 1-2, 2024 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $40 general admission. Tickets to the 3/2 gala are $250 and include access to the performance and the reception immediately following, as well as a $50 tax-deductible gift to support Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre. Patron-level gala tickets are available for $500 and include the performance, reception and a $300 tax-deductible gift. Tickets may be purchased at https://tribecapac.org/event/amanda-selwyn-dance-theatre-presents-habit-formed/?instance_id=2240. For more information, visit https://amandaselwyndance.org/habit-formed-world-premiere/.

Habit Formed is an evening-length work that will premiere at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center as the company's 24th Annual Performance Season. The piece explores how habits are created and broken in our lives. These habits can manifest strength, ease, and freedom and also create limits, boundaries, and affliction. The piece is set in a world of shifting physical structures (cages, netting, rocks) embodying the delicate balance between the growth potential and entrapment of habitual action. The piece lingers between the comfort of routine and the desire for change, as dancers break away from established patterns and embark on solo journeys of self-discovery.

Habit Formed weaves fluid, sensuous movements with sharp, distinctive gestures. The ensemble of ten dancers move from moments of synchrony to disruption, illustrating the tension between conformity, individuality, and the struggle to break free from ingrained patterns. The piece traverses a spectrum of emotions associated with habits, from euphoria to restlessness to liberation. From the shackles of habit to symphonic moments of self-awareness and agency, the dancers face personal change and the potential for transformation. The ultimate journey of the work is a story of discernment, unpacking how we can be empowered by intentional habits and not impaired by them. Habit Formed includes Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre's company dancers, scenic design by Rob Dutiel and Anna-Alisa Belous, costume design by Anna-Alisa Belouw, lighting design by Dan Ozminkowski, and sound design by Joel Wilhelmi.

18) New York City Opera

presents

Enrico Caruso - His Songs

featuring tenor Mark Milhofer and pianist Marco Scolastra

Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 7:30pm

at Carnegie Hall

New York City Opera presents Caruso and His Songs on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 7:30pm

at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, 881 7th Ave, NYC. Tickets are $10 for students, $35 for general admission, and can be purchased online at https://www.carnegiehall.org/calendar/2024/02/21/caruso-and-his-songs-0730pm.

150 years after his birth, tenor Mark Milhofer and pianist Marco Scolastra pay homage to one of the most famous singers of all time with a recital made up of songs written by and for Enrico Caruso, taken from their new double album. A 90 minute program that shows an unknown side of the tenor along with examples of how he influenced and inspired his friends, colleagues and admirers to write for his incredible voice. Caruso was really the first “cross-over” artist, the first international celebrity, bringing to a wider audience his stage roles alongside the Neapolitan songs of his homeland. He was either the first international operatic superstar to leave behind an extensive aural legacy, or he was the first singer to be propelled to that status as a result of his recordings. Either way, he became a household name, his recordings reaching an audience beyond any previous singer’s dreams.

Mark Milhofer has discovered at least ninety songs written for and dedicated to him. But what most people don’t realize is that Caruso himself also composed, writing a handful of songs. Sometimes he just wrote the tune, sometimes just the words and just once he wrote both. The inspiration for many of the songs was his colorful and sometimes tragic love life, dominated by his partner Ada Giachetti. Caruso’s life was full of drama, great wealth, generosity and a lot of hard work.

Announces Free Interactive Sail Raising Tours for Kids

February 21–25

South Street Seaport Museum announces a new free family-friendly Interactive Sail Raising Tour for Kids, running from Wednesday, February 21 through Sunday, February 25, 2024, with these hands-on guided tours at 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm.

Looking for family-friendly activities to enjoy while New York City public schools are closed for Mid-Winter Recess? The Seaport Museum is offering extended open days that each include expanded tours that teach you how to raise the sail on our historic 1885 tall ship, Wavertree

Bring your family and friends to participate in a hands-on tour that will transport you and your kids into the fascinating world of 19th century sailors. On your visit, you will explore the main deck that features the newly restored forecastle, where the crew bunked; the galley, where meals were prepared; the saloon, which acted as the captain’s living room and the ship’s office in port; and the quarterdeck, where you can man the helm, turn the ships wheel, and learn about the capstan. You will also get a look into the vast cargo hold, which stored bulk cargo on Wavertree’s many journeys to distant ports around the globe during her 24-year sailing career.

Advanced registration is required for sail raising tours as space is limited. All children must be accompanied by an adult; maximum four children per adult. Strollers cannot be brought onboard. Registration is required for each participating child and adult. seaportmuseum.org/mid-winter-recess

25)  Works & Process Presents

Washington National Opera: Turandot

Sunday, February 25, 2024

Guggenheim Museum

Works & Process presents Washington National Opera: Turandot on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at 7pm at the Guggenheim’s Peter B. Lewis Theater, 1071 Fifth Avenue, NY. Tickets $55 to Choose-What-You-Pay. To purchase tickets, visit https://www.worksandprocess.org/calendar/works-and-process-at-the-guggenheim-turandot.

Turandot is one of Puccini’s most fascinating operas. With sumptuous music and eye-popping spectacle, it tells the story of a beautiful, powerful princess and her transformation. It is an opera with many complications, including the fact that Puccini died before he was able to complete it. (Today, it is most often performed with an ending by Franco Alfano.) For Washington National Opera’s new production, the company has commissioned a new ending by Grammy Award–winning composer Christopher Tin and playwright and screenwriter Susan Soon He Stanton. It will premiere in May 2024 at the Kennedy Center. Francesca Zambello, Artistic Director of Washington National Opera, will be joined by Soon He Stanton and Tin to discuss the making of a Turandot for our time: a portrait of a strong woman who overcomes a traumatic past, an experience that leads to the fall of tyranny and the rise of democracy. Singers will perform highlights.
