In this new improved world of striving for greater diversity and inclusion in theater, we cannot just talk the talk, but we must walk the walk as well. Land acknowledgments are fine but they are not enough. The history of Indigenous people needs to be seen through their own eyes not just through the whitewashed eyes of others. Accordingly, Between Two Knees represents a step in the right direction.
The 1491s are a Native American sketch comedy group. Their show Between Two Knees presents a view of indigenous history from the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890 through the occupation of Wounded Knee by the American Indian Movement in 1973. The show is a comedy although a very dark one. Accordingly, there are a lot of aspects that may trigger some people including graphic violence, gunshots, pedophile priests, and more. Therefore, we also do not recommend this show for children. For a full list of trigger warnings go to www.tdf.org/shows/19745/between-two-knees
At times, this show is screamingly funny. At times, it may make you uncomfortable. However, the opportunity to see indigenous people presenting their own stories in their own way cannot be stressed enough.
