Tales from the Guttenberg Bible is actor, Steve Guttenberg's personal story. Although Guttenberg does appear as himself in the show, it is not a one-person play. He is joined on stage by three fellow actors, Arnie Burton, Dan Domigues, and Carine Montbertrand. They fill out his story by hilariously taking on a variety of roles including his parents, his agents, and fellow actors. They elevate the play from a self-indulgent vanity piece to a delightfully amusing theatrical experience.
That being said, Guttenberg is a very likable personable guy. If you didn't think so before, you certainly will after seeing this show. His story, however, while interesting is not necessarily interesting enough on its own to merit an entire show. Maybe, it's because his story is just too happy, there is no tragedy in it, no dark hidden secrets. The way Guttenberg goes through life, at least as presented in this show, just rolling with the punches and never being deeply affected by anything (except his father's death which doesn't occur until the end), is admirable but doesn't make for a very interesting story by itself. However, it is the way in which his story is told that takes it to another level and makes this a show worth seeing.
And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.
