Opening Night 5/20
Provocative, hilarious, and unexpectedly tender, cityscrape is a new play that dares to ask: does sharing a vibrator collection make you officially co-dependent? Trapped inside the ticking time bomb of their twenties, roommates Kitt and Kat are willing to do almost anything for their art, even if it means destroying the friendship that keeps them afloat. cityscrape is a razor-sharp excavation of what it means to truly be “seen” by another person — and what happens if the version of ourselves that’s reflected back is an egocentric monster.

3) Magic Box
Five magicians. Five agendas. One magic box. Who will open it in this lively, sexy new musical?
Why did the recently deceased Amazing Jack leave all his magic props to his incompetent apprentice, Charlie? Jack even left Charlie the magic box, a powerful instrument intended for good that has the misfortune of attracting evildoers. Jack’s daughter, Laura, a young but skillful magician, must protect the box from an oversexed witch who refuses to get old and who shares some shocking family secrets.
Laura desperately wants a family or at least a friend. But who can she trust? Armando, her former Latin lover who has been seduced by the dark side? Merlin (no, not that Merlin!), her late father’s best friend? Will Laura find the power to turn the tables or will evil triumph? Where is the magic? Come see Magic Box to find out!

4) The Village
Set in 1979 and loosely based on Our Town, THE VILLAGE! A DISCO DAYDREAM plays with themes of love, friendship, life, death and disco as it irreverently weaves its way from pre-AIDS New York City to the present day. Joyous, clever and bittersweet, THE VILLAGE! is a character-driven story of a time that no longer exists, yet whose essence remains a vital thread in the fabulous fabric of our collective consciousness. The play presents an intimate look at the queer life in Manhattan on the cusp of the AIDS crisis. Underneath the exuberant dancing and whip-smart dialogue is a stealthy pathos that packs a wallop.

Throughout the pandemic Phill has been conducting A GAGA GUIDE TO THE LOWER EAST SIDE, a walking tour of the Lower East Side with an emphasis on the exploits of his favorite pop star and downtown denizen Lady Gaga. 11) Brooklyn Children’s Museum Celebrates AAPI Heritage Month with Gordon & Li Li Storytime on May 18
Event is presented during Amazon Free Hours
Brooklyn Children’s Museum will celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a special reading of “Gordon & Li Li: Colors in Mandarin” by author Michele Wong McSween on Thursday, May 18.
The program, which offers a Mandarin lesson, an interactive book reading, and an art project, takes place from 3 pm-4 pm during Amazon Free Hours at the Museum.
What: Michele Wong McSween reads “Gordon & Li Li: Colors in Mandarin” during Amazon Free Hours
When: Thursday, May 18, from 3 pm-4 pm
Where: Brooklyn Children’s Museum, 145 Brooklyn Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, 11213
Gordon is a five year old panda who lives in Brooklyn with his parents and two younger brothers. He is an avid KISS fan and loves playing air guitar to his favorite song, ‘Rock And Roll All Nite’. When he’s not rocking out, you can find him drawing and reading about his favorite animals: orcas and sharks. His favorite color is aquamarine blue because it reminds him of the ocean — his happy place. When Gordon grows up, he wants to become a marine biologist, a rock star, or a pizza maker because like any true New Yorker, he’s always searching for the best slice!
Li Li is also five and she’s from Beijing, China. She’s read all about New York and is so excited to see it with her own eyes. Whether by train or by scooter, Li Li loves to explore the diverse neighborhoods, learn about their history and culture, and of course sample the multi-cultural foods New York has to offer. When Li Li’s not exploring Brooklyn, you’ll find her reading or hosting tea parties where she serves foods from around the world to her extensive collection of stuffed animals. Li Li’s dream job would take her to all the places she’s read about so she can become a global citizen of the world, learn multiple languages, and eat and eat and eat.
Together they are two lovable panda cousins who want to learn each other’s languages.
The author, Michele Wong McSween, is a former fashion designer, mom, and author/creator of Gordon & Li Li. Growing up as a fourth generation Chinese-American, she never learned to speak Chinese, so making sure her own boys were exposed to the language and culture became a priority for her.
Amazon Free Hours take place on Thursday afternoons from 2 pm-5 pm, allowing visitors to explore some of the Museum’s most-loved exhibits, including toddler-favorite Totally Tots, the miniature shops of World Brooklyn, the rooftop kids’ climber, and much more.
Brooklyn Children’s Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am–5 pm.

15) FREE Performance & Talkback with
New York Society for Ethical Culture’s Eco-Artist-in-Residence
Jody Sperling & the Time Lapse Dance Ensemble
May 19, 2023 at 7pm
Location: The New York Society for Ethical Culture, Adler Hall
2 West 64th Street @ Central Park West
The New York Society for Ethical Culture presents a stunning evening of ecologically-themed works by its Eco-Artist-in-Residence, dancer-choreographer Jody Sperling, and her Time Lapse Dance ensemble. The ongoing residency is a unique and timely collaboration between the Society—whose mission is to encourage respect for humanity and nature and to create a better world—and Sperling’s company, whose mission is to deploy dance toward envisioning a more embodied, sustainable, and equitable future.
The program showcases the climate-engaged collaboration between Sperling and environmental composer Matthew Burtner whose previous works have focused on such themes as melting sea ice, changing wind patterns, and plastic proliferation. With their new work-in-progress Arbor, they dwell on the nature of trees. In voluminous costumes meticulously-painted with tree limbs (by textile artist Gina Nagy Burns and costume designer Mary Jo Mecca), the dancers spiral, billow, and encircle one another in gusts of action resembling timelapses of tree motion.
The evening also includes excerpts from repertory highlights. Wind Rose renders changing atmospheric patterns palpable to sight, sound, and touch. Plastic Harvest explores the proliferation of plastic pollution. Lastly, Sperling offers the solo Piece for a Northern Sky, a whirling meditation on planetary motion.
The Time Lapse Dance performers are Frances Barker, Anika Hunter, Maki Kitahara, Nicole Lemelin, Sperling, Sarah Tracy and Rathi Varma.
The performance will be followed by an artist talkback.

The bird-themed program includes two of Dun’s own works: Passacaglia: Secret of Wind and Birds and Contrabass Concerto: Wolf Totem; as well as Dinicu’s The Lark and Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite.

Yida An, violin
Milad Daniari, bass
Grigoraș Dinicu: Ciocârlia (The Lark)
Tan Dun: Contrabass Concerto: Wolf Totem
Tan Dun: Passacaglia: Secret of Wind and Birds
Igor Stravinsky: The Firebird Suite
Romanian violin virtuoso and composer Grigoraş Ionică Dinicu’s spectacular Ciocârlia (The Lark) opens the concert. Based on a Romanian folk music tune supposedly composed by his grandfather Angheluș Dinicu for the pan flute, the virtuosic work is a soloist showpiece, performed by violinist Yida An, a 2024 graduate of Bard Conservatory’s Graduate Instrumental Arts Program. Tan Dun’s Contrabass Concerto: Wolf Totem, was inspired by the Chinese novel Wolf Totem by Jiang Rong, which describes the dying culture of the Mongols. The symbol of the Mongolian wolf—represented by the bass—and its life in the grasslands mirrored for the composer the human spirit and our relationship to the natural world. Bassist Milad Daniari, a graduate of TŌN’s inaugural class, is featured. Tan Dun’s second work on the program, Passacaglia: Secret of Wind and Birds, was commissioned by Carnegie Hall in 2015 for the National Youth Orchestra of the USA and draws on both Eastern and Western musical forms. The work incorporates sounds of nature with those digitally recorded and played on smartphones, turning the devices into instruments that reflect on modern life. The afternoon closes with Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, a ballet and orchestral concert work commissioned by ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev for the 1920 season of his Ballets Russes. The plot tells the story of an evil ogre’s defeat through the intervention of the Firebird, a miraculous creature from Russian fairytales. The work’s premiere brought the relatively unknown Stravinsky to international acclaim.
Tickets priced at $25–$50 are available online at jazz.org, by calling CenterCharge at 212.721.6500, or at the Jazz at Lincoln Center box office at Broadway & 60th, Ground Floor. Ticket holders will need to comply with the venue’s health and safety requirements, which can be found here.

The multi-year plan to elevate and restore marginalized plays to the American canon will also spotlight works by JEANNIE BARROGA, PHILIP KAN GOTANDA, EDWARD SAKAMOTO, and WAKAKO YAMAUCHI
Roundabout Theatre Company is proud to announce the third season of The Refocus Project, its multi-year project to elevate and restore marginalized plays to the American canon. This year’s series of readings will feature Asian American and Pacific Islander playwrights: Prince Gomolvilas, Velina Hasu Houston, Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl, and Anuvab Pal. In addition to readings of their plays, this year’s line-up will also include artistic support for plays by Jeannie Barroga, Philip Kan Gotanda, Edward Sakamoto, and Wakako Yamauchi in an essay series titled ‘Literary Ancestry Series: Responses from Ma-Yi Writers Lab’ in partnership with Ma-Yi Theater Company. The series will include essays on each of these plays by members of Ma-Yi Writers Lab discussing how the AAPI canon has influenced their own work.
With the third season of The Refocus Project, Roundabout will workshop and produce free readings of each play this summer in the Laura Pels Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre. In the fall, a streamed version of four readings will be available free of charge. Year Three plays were chosen by a reading committee led by Lead Refocus Advisor Jess McLeod, and including Rehana Lew Mirza, Gaven Trinidad, Annie Jin Wang and members of the Roundabout Artistic staff.
The Refocus Project also features a robust selection of materials, available to industry professionals and the public, including an online resource library and community and education events.

About the Capitán Miranda
Built in 1930 in the Matagorda Shipyard of Cadiz, Spain, the Capitán Miranda was named in honor of Captain Francisco P. Miranda (1869–1925), who served Uruguay as a cabinet officer, war secretary, and later professor of marine geography at the Naval Academy of Uruguay. Capitán Miranda originally served as a hydrographic research vessel, performing countless cartographical surveys which were, and still are, highly useful to seamen. The ship appears in the 1956’s Lloyd’s Register of ships with two masts, not the schooner rig she now carries. In 1977, the vessel underwent a major refit and became a three-masted marconi-rigged schooner. In 1978 was rededicated as a sail training vessel for the Uruguayan navy teaching newly graduated midshipmen to apply the knowledge acquired at the Naval Academy. In 1988, she completed her inaugural circumnavigation in 355 days, becoming the first vessel of the Uruguayan Navy to do so. Capitán Miranda is visiting New York City in collaboration with Sail250NY, The Howard Hughes Corporation, and the South Street Seaport Museum.
Make a full day out of your visit to see the Capitán Miranda by enjoying the South Street Seaport Museum’s Pay-What-You-Wish General Admission.
