New York, NY
When: This event took place on May 3, 2023
MasterVoices recently presented the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, Iolanthe. Although Iolanthe may not be as well known as other Gilbert & Sullivan works like The Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore, it is equally as entertaining. The story revolves around a fairy who was exiled for marrying a mortal and her son a shepherd who is half human/half fairy and wants to marry a shepherdess. However, he needs the permission of the Lord Chancellor who wants to marry her himself. There is more to it than that and all of it is quite amusing.
The story is great fun. The songs, while not anything to leave the theater humming or likely to stick in one's head were nice enough to listen to while watching the show, The voices of the members of MasterVoices as well as those of stellar guests artists like Christine Ebersole, Jason Daniely, Santino Fontana, and more were beautiful as was the dancing of additional guest artist, ballerina, Tiler Peck. Schyler Vargas and Ashley Fabian as the shepherd and shepherdess respectively may not be as well known as some of the other guest artists but they were definitely equally as talented. All in all, the show, which pokes fun at politics, lawyers, and more was extremely charming and quite a pleasant way to spend a few hours.
And that's our view. Although this performance marked the end of MasterVoice's current season, you can find out more about them or sign up for updates about future performances at www.mastervoices.org.
Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.
