Featuring some of the most famous dogs in 20th century media - and some not-so-famous dogs who were well-loved by their humans. Canines take center stage in this exhibition including the artists' reflections of The Thin Man, 'Frasier," "Lassie," The Wiz, Annie, Gypsy, The Will Rogers Follies and more.
Dogs appear in drawings in nearly every category of the artists' work; theatre, film, television, music, and literature, as well as politics, private commissions, and Hirschfeld's earliest lithographs. The dogs seen in this show have been sorted by breed, just as they do in the best dog shows. There are breeds from each of the seven American Kennel Club groups represented: Sporting, Working, Terrier, Hound, Toy, Herding, and Non-Sporting.

3) CENTENARY STAGE COMPANY ANNOUNCES
2021 SUMMER SEASON
Centenary Stage Company announces 2021 Summer season featuring a full line up of Musical Theatre productions, concerts, and the return of the popular Front Porch Series hosting a selection of outdoor cabarets and family friendly Young Audience Series offerings. Tickets for all 2021 Summer season events will be available for purchase beginning May 1, 2021.
The 2021 Summer season launches with Forever Plaid July 8 – 18 in the Sitnik Theatre of the Lackland Performing Arts Center. Once upon a time, there were four guys (Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie) who discovered that they shared a love for music and then got together to become their idols - The Four Freshman, The Hi-Lo's and The Crew Cuts. Rehearsing in the basement of Smudge's family's plumbing supply company, they became "Forever Plaid". On the way to their first big gig, the "Plaids" are broadsided by a school bus and killed instantly. It is at the moment when their careers and lives end that the story of Forever Plaid begins. Singing in close harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations and executing their charmingly outlandish choreography with overzealous precision, the "Plaids" are a guaranteed smash, with a program of beloved songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling in the aisles when they're not humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits of the 1950s. Specific performance times are: Thursdays July, 8 & 15 at 7:30PM; Fridays, July 9 & 16 at 8:00 PM; Saturdays July 10 & 17 at 8:00 PM; and Sundays, July 11 & 18 at 2:00 PM. Tickets range from $18 – $29.50 with discounts available for seniors (65+), students and children under 12 on select performances, as well as, “Buy One, Get One” tickets on Thursday evenings for Family Night.
The summer season continues with the musical production of Always… Patsy Cline July 29 – August 8 in the Sitnik Theatre of the Lackland Performing Arts Center. One of the most produced musicals in America according to American Theatre Magazine, Always... Patsy Cline is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. The show is based on a true story about Cline's friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The musical, complete with down home country humor, true emotion, and even some audience participation, includes many of Patsy's unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight... 27 songs in all. The show's title was inspired by Cline's letters to Seger, which were consistently signed "Love ALWAYS... Patsy Cline." Always…Patsy Cline runs in the Sitnik from July 29 – August 8. Specific performance times are: Thursdays July, 29 & August 5 @ 7:30PM; Fridays, July 30 & August 6 @ 8:00 PM; Saturdays July 31 & August 7 @ 8:00 PM; and Sundays, August 1 & 8 @ 2:00 PM. Tickets range from $18 – $29.50 with discounts available for seniors (65+), students, and children under 12 on select performances, as well as, “Buy One, Get One” tickets on Thursday evenings for Family Night.

5) Appalachian Springs Foundation
announces
the Virtual World Premiere of
Thoreau’s Henhawk Visits Mexico
Concluding the Thoreau Society’s Annual Gathering on July 11, 2021
Appalachian Springs Foundation announces the virtual world premiere of Thoreau’s Henhawk Visits Mexico on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at 7pm ET. Tickets to the video are $20 and can be purchased online at https://thoreausociety.networkforgood.com/events/30081-thoreau-s-henhawk-visits-mexico, with all proceeds benefiting The Thoreau Society. Filmmaker Clara Gibson Maxwell’s dance work will be the conference finale of this year’s Thoreau Society's Annual Gathering. The 80th Annual Gathering of the Thoreau Society will take place virtually from July 7-11, 2021, featuring keynote speaker Dr. Ibram X. Kendi. For more information and to register for the entirety of the five-day conference, visit thoreausociety.org.
Thoreau’s Henhawk Visits Mexico is a new 39-minute choreographic/musical/video-projection/spoken-word creation by Appalachian Springs Foundation Artistic Director Clara Gibson Maxwell. The performance, filmed at a colloquium in Mexico City, revolved around an 1859 excerpt from Thoreau's journal: “What we call wildness is a civilization other than our own.”
Henhawk’s soaring perspective was inspired by Thoreau’s saying, “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” Students wearing GoPro video cameras filmed the live performance from different angles and heights and this footage was incorporated into the initial edited version, which was projected the following evening at the venue and followed by a deliberate discussion with these students on what they had just seen and filmed. The Virtual World Premiere includes responses about Thoreau's interest in native culture and his act of civil disobedience, in protest against the Mexican American War, from an Indigenous Mexican student activist, present at the original performance, who is engaged in a native pirate-radio project in an area suffering from water-access issues.
The July 11 video premiere will be followed by a discussion with filmmaker Maxwell and Thoreau Society members about the contemporary relevance of Thoreau’s views on art, nature, Native peoples, somatic practices like yoga, and social change.

For more information visit: https://www.telecharge.com/Off-Broadway/Mandela/Overview and https://mandelanyc.com
MANDELA unveils the gripping untold story of Nelson Mandela in a world forever changed by apartheid. Confrontational and uncompromising in their pursuit for freedom of oppression in South Africa, Mandela, Winnie and The ANC fearlessly battle enormous odds, while maintaining their dignity and compassion. The many layers of the show portray how the U.S and South Africa mirrored each other, as protesting Blacks in each country suffered similar social injustices while fighting against oppression – and how the CIA played a mysterious role in Mr. Mandela’s capture. The show depicts highly sensitive subjects, but also evokes laughter and moments of joy. In 2021, MANDELA is a timely, relevant, moving experience for all.
Audience members are asked to do time with Mandela. As you arrive at the theater, you will be processed for detainment. You will be led through prison gates, handed handcuffs, and asked to put them on (or simply keep them as a souvenir). A performance for the socially cautious, the MANDELA delivers a powerful and timely message in a racially and socially inclusive manner. The cast are native African, African American, White, and Latino. The show brings the various faces of the world back onto the New York stage.

With John pursuing one man and Algy pursuing another, Lady Bracknell (who happens to be Gwyn’s mother) slowly unravels the odd strings of potential matchmaking. 16) South Street Seaport Museum Announces
New Digital Galleries in
Collections Online Portal:
300+ New Pieces Now Available
South Street Seaport Museum announces the release of the next set of collections items for digital visitors to browse, research, and enjoy online. In March 2021, the Museum launched a Collections Online Portal featuring over 1,300 pieces on virtual display, allowing audiences to explore New York City’s past through the archives, artifacts, and photographs of the South Street Seaport Museum. This second iteration includes over 300 more works of art and artifacts covering a variety of mediums, historical subjects, and themes relating to the growth of New York City as a world port. Now available, the digital galleries can be viewed for FREE at seaportmuseum.org/collectionsonline.
Discover history and works of art from the comfort of your home with the new online database. Featuring items from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century, the online collection is comprised of a searchable database of selected works of art and historic artifacts from the Seaport Museum’s permanent and working collections of over 28,500 objects, encapsulating the rich maritime heritage of New York City.
The four sets of new digital galleries include:
Broadsides
Broadsides are large sheets of paper printed on one side. From event advertisements to public announcements, they are predecessors of the modern poster. The Seaport Museum’s collections include a wide variety of these pieces of ephemera, including broadsides printed in New York related to 1830s steamboats on the Hudson River, or goods like oysters advertised in the 1850s to be available as far west as Oswego, Elmira, and Corning, thanks to the New York and Erie Railroad.
Ship Parts and Gear
The South Street Seaport Museum holds a wide variety of historic ship parts and gear, such as ship bells, capstans, binnacles, wood paneling, nameboards, anchors, and more. These artifacts largely represent ships that are no longer extant, including Hudson River steamboats, working vessels of New York Harbor, and the great ocean liners of the 20th century, as well as artifacts currently installed on board Seaport Museum’s flagship Wavertree. Highlights include the ship wheel of the ocean liner SS Normandie, the famous ocean liner that burned at her West Side pier during World War II; wood paneling decoration from RMS Mauretania, originally installed near ceiling in first-class smoking room; and wood paneling from the 1865 steamboat Dean Richmond.
Stereographs
A stereograph is composed of two pictures mounted next to each other, viewed with a set of lenses known as a stereoscope. Taken around 2.5 inches apart, roughly corresponding to the spacing of the eyes, the left picture represents what the left eye would see, and likewise for the right, so when observing the pictures through a stereoscopic viewer, the pair of photographs converge into a single three-dimensional image. This optical marvel was extremely popular in the mid-19th century, becoming the first ever mass-produced photographic images sold, and a precursor to motion picture.
US Custom House Photograph Collection Highlights
A selection of 200 photographic prints, dated ca. 1920s-1960s documenting the operation of the US Customs in the port of New York, from photographic reporting of accidents and incidents, to inspections of vessels’ crew quarters and passengers entering port. This selection is part of a larger collection composed of more photographic prints, postcards, historic records, and artifacts on long-term loan from the National Archives.
Additional virtual highlights of the South Street Seaport Museum collections include the following categories on seaportmuseum.org/collections: Architectural Elements, Drawings and Watercolors, Manuscripts and Ephemera, Navigational Instruments and Shipwright Tools, Objects Around the Neighborhood, Paintings, Photographs, Prints and Lithographs, Printing History, Scrimshaw, Ship Components, Ship Models, Special Collections, Tattoo Collection, Remains of the Old Hotels, Institutional Archives, and Maritime Reference.
For more information, visit the Museum’s bi-monthly blog and the Collections Chronicles section of it at seaportmuseum.org/blog, where the collections team takes readers behind the scenes to shares some of their work, while highlighting hidden gems of history, the Seaport, and the Seaport Museum’s collection. *********************************************************************

21) City of Water Day is July 10, 2021
Experience the BlueLine—the Future High Tide Line—with Free Boating, Workshops, and Entertainment at Dozens of Simultaneous In Your Neighborhood Festivities
Around the Region
In celebration of the metropolitan region’s 1,600 miles of coastline, the 14th annual City of Water Day will take place Saturday, July 10. Organized by the Waterfront Alliance and the New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program (HEP), City of Water Day will offer educational activities, entertainment, and opportunities for recreational boating at dozens of waterfronts in New York and New Jersey. With both in-person and online programs, City of Water Day seeks to raise awareness of the region’s vulnerability to the impacts of climate change and sea level rise. Today, more than one million people in our region face direct risks from coastal flooding.
City of Water Day In Your Neighborhood will take place on and near the water on July 10 in all five boroughs, New Jersey, and Westchester. Local organizations and agencies are offering free activities, including hands-on workshops such as water quality monitoring, and kayaking, rowing, sailing, paddleboarding, and fishing opportunities. From water sampling at Roberto Clemente State Park on the Harlem River in the Bronx, to a family waterfront walk in Red Hook, to birdwatching along the Rahway River in Linden, New Jersey, there’s something for everyone on City of Water Day. Check this interactive map to see all In Your Neighborhood events scheduled throughout the region, with more added every day.
At the South Street Seaport Museum in Lower Manhattan, free activities from 11am to 5pm on City of Water Day include self-guided tours of the 1885 tall ship Wavertree and demonstrations by Bowne & Co. printers using the Seaport Museum's working collection of 19th-century printing presses, on the steps of 209 Water Street. The Seaport Museum will also host a Mobile Community Covid-19 Vaccine Clinic at Pier 16.
At the Jamaica Bay Festival, family-friendly activities include a guided ferry ride from Wall Street to Rockaway, fishing, sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, nature walks, and games. For the adventurous, a kayak tour led by a National Park Service ranger will paddle from Canarsie Pier to Shirley Chisholm State Park. “For the fourth year, the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy is proud to partner with organizations throughout Jamaica Bay to celebrate the bay and access to the water during the Jamaica Bay Festival on City of Water Day. The festival is an opportunity to bring communities around Jamaica Bay together to celebrate this important urban estuary. On this special day, paddlers from Brooklyn and Queens will kick off the festival meeting by water at Sunset Cove for a kayak parade around Jamaica Bay to highlight the importance of waterfront access and a clean and healthy estuary, followed by a full day of free activities for all to enjoy,” said Alex Zablocki, Executive Director, Jamaica BayRockaway Parks Conservancy.
At West Harlem Piers Park at West 130th Street and the Hudson River, staff members from the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater and WE ACT for Environmental Justice will team up to offer activities for children and adults. Count on seeing fascinating Hudson River creatures in tanks, get involved with water testing, and learn about community access to the river.
After City of Water Day, Waterfront Alliance’s call for climate action continues, with Art at the BlueLine, an outdoor exhibition presented for the second year in partnership with The Howard Hughes Corporation®. At Art at the BlueLine, which opens on July 14 and runs through August 2 in Lower Manhattan’s Seaport, three works of art will offer a creative lens into the realities of climate change, coastal resilience, waterfront access, and environmental justice. Details about Art at the BlueLine will be forthcoming; artist previews are available on the Art at the BlueLine webpage. *********************************************************************
