I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

7) Tawni O'Dell's Windows

Windows is a breathtaking new play that brings to light the enormous changes that have washed over us all during the past three years. Fear, hilarity, anger, love and loss were unfolding behind curtains, blinds, broken glass, and bars. Whether it’s the self-reflection born out of isolation, or the simple realization of how much we value our most basic connection with others, the great pandemic of 2020 forced us to change from the inside out. Stars of stage and screen delve into the new beginnings we find ourselves in after the world forced us to face an abyss together, but alone. What each of us endured as individuals when time suddenly stood still may differ, but we’ve all been changed by the experience. Our characters reshaped, for better or worse. Who have you become?

It’s summer, the cicadas are singing, and the Lafayette family has returned to their late patriarch’s Arkansas home to deal with the remains of his estate. Toni (Paulson), the eldest daughter, hopes they’ll spend the weekend remembering and reconnecting over their beloved father. Bo (Stoll), her brother, wants to recoup some of the funds he spent caring for Dad at the end of his life. But things take a turn when their estranged brother, Franz (Esper), appears late one night, and mysterious objects are discovered among the clutter. Suddenly, long-hidden secrets and buried resentments can’t be contained, and the family is forced to face the ghosts of their past.

9) Hadestown

JonJon Briones joins the cast as Hermes 3/19
Isa Briones joins the cast as Eurydice 3/19

Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.

Fighting to save his marriage, regain the respect of his son, and pay off the countless loan sharks looking to collect their debts, Tucker will do whatever it takes to make you laugh. If the joke doesn't land, it's not because it isn't funny, you just didn't get it. 11) AMERICAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA GIVES RARE PERFORMANCE OF

ARNOLD SCHOENBERG’S MASSIVE

GURRE-LIEDER

WITH MORE THAN 200 ARTISTS

ON STAGE AT CARNEGIE HALL

MARCH 22, 2024

Concert Marks Gurre-Lieder’s Centennial and the 150th Anniversary of Schoenberg’s Birth

Music Director Leon Botstein leads the American Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and the Bard Festival Chorale in a rare performance of Schoenberg’s massive cantata, Gurre-Lieder, at Carnegie Hall on Friday, March 22 at 8 PM. Infrequently performed due to the unusually large number of musicians required and the logistical challenges it poses, the work is scored for more than 200 musicians, including six soloists, chorus, and a grand orchestra.

The performance celebrates the 150th anniversary of Schoenberg’s birth, and the centennial of Gurre-Lieder’s 1913 world premiere in Vienna. It has been more than 90 years since the work’s 1932 American premiere by American Symphony Orchestra founder Leopold Stokowski with the Philadelphia Orchestra. It was recorded the next day for a remarkable twenty-seven 78 RPM discs. This concert closes the ASO’s 2023-24 season at Carnegie Hall.

Wagnerian in conception, Schoenberg’s Gurre-Lieder is his largest work. It was written during the composer’s tonal period and represents the ideal of late Romanticism, full of lush, colorful orchestration along with endless melodies and a highly chromatic harmonic language. The complexity of the work can be demonstrated in part by its gargantuan orchestration, which includes 40 violins; 6 timpani, tenor, snare, and bass drums; 3 four-part male choruses and an eight-part mixed chorus; cymbals, triangle, tam-tam, ratchet, glockenspiel, xylophone, and even large iron chains. Met with a standing ovation at its Viennese premiere, the cantata springs from a sonnet in an 1868 novella titled A Cactus Blooms by the young Danish poet Jens Peter Jacobsen. The story is based on a 14th-century Gurre legend about King Waldemar, his passion for the maiden Tove Lille, their love tryst at Gurre Castle, and Tove’s subsequent murder by the king’s jealous wife.

Tickets: Priced at $25–$65, tickets are available at carnegiehall.org, by calling CarnegieCharge at 212.247.7800, or visiting the box office at 57th St. & 7th Ave.

Past and present become one landscape in this epic as enemies are revealed, companions are found, trauma is unpacked, and what was only thought becomes (un)spoken word. 13) The Classical Theatre of Harlem Celebrates 100 Years of the Harlem Renaissance and 25 Years of CTH with ‘Renaissance Reborn: Reimagining the Past, Igniting the Future’

The Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH), in partnership with the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, is thrilled to announce a special event, "Renaissance Reborn: Reimagining the Past, Igniting the Future," commemorating 100 years of the Harlem Renaissance and 25 years of CTH. The event will take place on March 21st at 7 PM at the historic Cathedral of St. John the Divine (1047 Amsterdam Ave at 112th Street, New York, NY 10025).

Featuring luminaries in history, Black arts, and Harlem culture, CTH is hosting a public panel discussion on the Harlem Renaissance, commemorating the centennial of a dinner hosted by Charles S. Johnson in 1924. This dinner marked the first time Harlem’s centrality to America’s extraordinary Black literary output of the day was recognized. As a company, CTH is working to reorient New York City’s cultural axis further north, with a Renaissance Reborn by commissioning original works of theatre by today’s burgeoning talents, offering free access to its work for everyone, and making deep investments in community care that now encompasses work with dozens of health NGOs, local microbusiness entrepreneurs, and its peer arts and culture groups.

Renaissance Reborn will feature live performances and a powerhouse panel discussing the legacy and future of the Harlem Renaissance with historians, local artists, and culinary leaders. Confirmed panelists include: Carl Cofield, Melba’s Melba Wilson, Peter Francis James, David Levering Lewis, and Mark Harding. The panel will be moderated by Shondaland staff writer, Mia Brabham Nolan. WNYC is a media partner of the event. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs In partnership with the City Council. CTH will be presented with a proclamation from New York Mayor Eric Adams marking the significance of the event.

The evening will also feature musical performances and excerpts from CTH's upcoming production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, set in the heart of the Harlem Renaissance.

This unique opportunity celebrates the rich cultural history of Harlem and the impact of the Harlem Renaissance on our society today. Free tickets are available now and can be reserved at www.cthnyc.org.

14) Center Stage Records Announces Re-Release of Four Albums by

JESSICA MOLASKEY

Available Digitally Now

Center Stage Records announced the re-release of four classic Jessica Molaskey albums – Pentimento, A Good Day, Make Believe, and Sitting in Limbo, will be available digitally on Friday, March 8, 2024 at CenterStageRecords.com and on all digital platforms.

Digitally remastered and re-sequenced, Pentimento is filled with songs of the 1920s and 30s that hoped to brighten the Depression. Accompanied by a wonderful band that includes her husband, John Pizzarelli, and father-in-law, Bucky Pizzarelli (both playing guitars and ukuleles), bassist brother-in-law Martin Pizzarelli, clarinetist Ken Peplowski, and violinist Johnny Frigo, this stunning debut album was originally released in 2002.

On the heels of Pentimento, Jessica Molaskey turned her sights to jazz of the 1950s and with her second album, A Good Day. Originally released in 2003, A Good Day takes off from the songs and stylings of Peggy Lee and her own guitarist husband Dave Barbour. A combination of jazz standards, show tunes, and Molaskey-Pizzarelli originals, the album was inspired out of a small stack of records neatly arranged beside the family hi-fi when Molaskey was growing up. The core group of musicians who backed her on Pentimento return here, supplemented by larger forces orchestrated by Don Sebesky and Dick Lieb.

For her third solo outing, Jessica Molaskey returned to her roots with a sublime album of show tunes called Make Believe. Joined guitarist-producer-husband John Pizzarelli (plus a full complement of strings, winds, and brass), Molaskey infuses a dozen Broadway tunes with her own jazzy style and sass. Adam Guettel joins her in a duet of his grandfather Richard Rodgers' evergreen "Glad to Be Unhappy". Surrounded by an exceptional band and critically acclaimed, Make Believe was originally released in 2004.

Jessica Molaskey's fourth studio album, Sitting in Limbo finds the singer surrounded by an extraordinary group of jazz musicians, including Grammy-nominated keyboardists Larry Goldings and Larry Fuller, sax player Harry Allen, and her celebrated husband, jazz guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli — to covers ranging from Jimmy Cliff to Sting to Billy Joel to Joni Mitchell, plus a few Molaskey-Pizzarelli originals. Originally released in 2006, the results are disarming, captivating, stirring and irresistible.
