I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

1) Burbank

BURBANK tells the personal story of a 39-year-old Walt Disney fighting against Art Babbitt, the womanizing genius young animator and creator of Goofy, who led an animator’s strike in 1941. A painter named Betty Ann Dunbar, who by sexist company policy is only allowed to work in the ink & paint department, gets caught in the middle, soon forced to decide if going on strike is worth endangering the closest thing she may ever get to being a paid artist.

2) Dongpo: Life in Poems

Produced and performed by the China Oriental Performing Arts Group Meishan Song and Dance Theatre, Dongpo: Life in Poems is the latest contemporary operatic dance directed by the international acclaimed dancer, choreographer, director, and painter Shen Wei who was honored with the Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement in Choreography 2022. With live Guqin music by Zhao Xiaoxia, the production is based on the poetry and life experiences of the renowned Chinese poet Su Dongpo (1037-1101). Su Dongpo lived in the Song Dynasty, and the production transforms the comprehension of poetry into self-perception, and then externalizes it through body movement and multiple audiovisual expressions.

This production goes beyond a specific depiction of a poet's life. The work extends the movement language of modern dance and ballet by the deep integration of Chinese Opera, Tai Chi, and Visual Arts with a combination of Guqin music and contemporary music. It showcases the poet Dongpo's soul, affection, melancholy, homesickness, and his optimism in getting along with the world calmly and with ease, along with the utilization of multiple art forms such as poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal engraving. This work summarizes the poet's emotions throughout his life into 12 pieces of his poems. The contemplation, questioning, dreaming, intoxication, sorrow, lingering, and unrestrained emotions expressed in these poems are accessibly experienced and easily awakened to all beings in their vast and diverse lives, regardless of their Eastern or Western origins. A connection with the poet Dongpo from a millennium ago stimulates a spiritual bond and further enables a comprehension of the transcultural and universally shared love with intellectual and spiritual essence that unites humanity.

11) Battery Dance Accepting Applications for
Young Voices in Dance

Battery Dance is now accepting applications for Young Voices in Dance. Applications must be submitted online by April 21, 2024 at https://batterydance.org/apply-young-voices-in-dance/.

Young Voices in Dance celebrates the next generation of choreographers. The program highlights the intellectual curiosity, innovation, and artistic excellence of youth (AGES 15-22) from around the world. Young Voices in Dance will feature live performances with original works made and danced by youth.

Battery Dance Festival, New York City’s longest-running free public dance festival, was established by Battery Dance as the Downtown Dance Festival in 1982. It draws in-person audiences of approximately 2,000 people each night from the large downtown population of workers, residents, families, tourists, senior citizens and dance fans from the greater NYC metropolitan area and beyond. The Festival will be livestreamed to our worldwide audiences, reaching thousands of virtual viewers each night.

Submissions will be reviewed by the Battery Dance Festival Manager and a Youth Curatorial Panel. We encourage submissions that have a clear concept or theme, integrate interdisciplinary collaborations, and showcase a unique voice as a choreographer. All styles of dance are eligible to apply. Eligible young choreographers who previously applied for the main Festival earlier this year are welcome to apply again to be considered for Young Voices. Selected pieces will perform at the 43rd Annual Battery Dance Festival at Rockefeller Park in NYC on August 12, 2024.

Dance to Belong: A History of Dance at 92NY

A New Exhibition

March 12 through October 31, 2024

Weill Art Gallery

The 92nd Street Y, New York (92NY), one of New York’s leading cultural venues, presents Dancing the 92nd Street Y: A 150th Anniversary Celebrationwelcoming three legendary companies whose founders made these halls their home — Ailey II, Martha Graham Dance Company, and José Limón Dance Company. Bridging generations of pioneering dance makers, the evening pairs these dance companies with leading contemporary artists — Omar Román De Jesús, Jamar Roberts, and Hope Boykin — for a one-night-only celebration of the legendary choreographers and performers who shaped modern dance, and the stage that first welcomed them. This landmark performance is on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at 7:30 pm at the Kaufmann Concert Hall. Tickets start at $30 and are available at https://www.92ny.org/event/dancing-the-92nd-street-y.

In celebration of 150 years of dedication to artists and community, 92NY's new exhibition Dance to Belong: A History of Dance at 92NY, will be on view in the Weill Art Gallery from March 12, 2024, until Oct 31, 2024. The exhibition testifies to 92NY as a key site in dance and belonging. Photographs, performance programs, artwork, digital media, rare film footage, and other unseen ephemera render 92NY’s crucial place as a preeminent cultural institution located in the heart of New York City.

This singular exhibition illuminates 92NY’s historical importance as a sanctuary space in which dance history is made. Immigrants, BIPOC, and Jewish dance artists from 1874, when 92NY first opened its doors, to 2024 have made 92NY home. In its early years, 92NY was one of the only places that offered access to dance studios, classes, lectures, and performances for people of all racial, ethnic, religious, or cultural backgrounds. Co-curated by Jessica Friedman, PhD, and Ninotchka Bennahum, PhD with Jeanne Haffner, PhD of Thinc Design.

The Milton J. Weill Art Gallery is open to patrons of Kaufmann Concert Hall during regularly scheduled events. Viewing hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3 pm - 5 pm and Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 9 am - 11 am. In addition, special viewing hours can be arranged.

5:30 pm – Exhibition Private View, Weill Art Gallery and Hall of Mirrors

6:30 pm – Presentation, Weill Art Gallery

7:30 pm – Performance, Kaufmann Concert Hall

The Limón Dance Company

José Limón’s There is a Time

Premiered in 1956, There is a Time is based on the historic poem from the Bible, Ecclesiastes: "To Everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under the Sun." This poem, based on the cycle of universal human experiences, is rich in both ideas and words. The piece is conceived in 12 sections (with a round dance for both Prologue and Finale) and takes its inspiration from that passage in Chapter 3 of “Ecclesiastes” that starts: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Each of the temporal activities mentioned by the Old Testament scribe—”a time to laugh” . . . . “a time to mourn” . . . . “a time to dance.”

Omar Román De Jesús’ Like Those Playground Kids at Midnight

In a world that often seeks to stifle individuality, “Like Those Playground Kids at Midnight” stands as a beacon of defiance, encouraging all to embrace their uniqueness and challenge the boundaries that confine them. It invites us to traverse the enigmatic landscapes of desire, identity, and aspiration, all while advocating for the liberation of the soul.

The Martha Graham Dance Company

Martha Graham’s Suite from Appalachian Spring

The Appalachian Spring Suite is a narrated presentation of highlights from Appalachian Spring that gives the audience an inside look at the remarkable collaboration between Martha Graham and Aaron Copland. The dancing is introduced by text borrowed from Graham’s letters to Copland. Her eloquent and intimate descriptions of the characters, setting and atmosphere for the work are matched with the end result – the music and dance they inspired. Copland’s Pulitzer Prize winning score and the clean, athletic Graham choreography clearly embody her early writings about the dance. The Appalachian Spring Suite offers the audience unique insight into the creative process of these two geniuses.

Jamar Roberts’ We the People

We The People, a radical new piece from Jamar Roberts, was made possible with a significant commissioning grant from The O’Donnell-Green Music and Dance Foundation. This production was also made possible by The 92nd Street Y, as part of 92NY’s 150th anniversary celebration, in honor and continued support of Martha Graham’s rich 92NY legacy. Production support was provided by the University of Michigan.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Company’s Ailey II

Ailey Classics is a collection of excerpts from three beloved works choreographed by Alvin Ailey between 1958 and 1972. This work of highlights features excerpts from Mr. Ailey’s first masterpiece Blues Suite, the lyrical and romantic The Lark Ascending, and his standout ballet Streams.

Hope Boykin’s “Manifesting Legacy”

A world premiere celebrating 92NY’s 150th anniversary and commissioned specifically for this event. Manifesting Legacy explores Boykin’s influences and lessons learned, marking her history and love of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and giving tribute to the leaders who made room for her to continue to grow as a mover and maker. Her twenty-year career as a performer was just the beginning — this new work is her thank you.

A SPECIAL BENEFIT PERFORMANCE OF

GEORGE BERNARD SHAW’S

MRS. WARREN’S PROFESSION

MONDAY MARCH 18th AT 7PM

AT SYMPHONY SPACE’S

LEONARD NIMOY THALIA THEATRE

TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE

Gingold Theatrical Group (GTG) (David Staller: Artistic Director, Isaiah Josiah: Managing Producer) announced today that Mrs. Warren’s Profession by George Bernard Shaw will kick-off their 19th season of Project Shaw. Inspired by the works of George Bernard Shaw, Project Shaw is a special series of Script-In-Hand performances that aim to provoke peaceful discussion and activism. Each performance is followed by a lively post-show discussion with the cast and director. Directed by Lily Kanter RiopelleMrs. Warren’s Profession will be presented at Symphony Space’s Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre (2537 Broadway at 95th Street) on Monday March 18, 2024, at 7PM. To learn more and reserve tickets, visit symphonyspace.org/events/vp-mrs-warrens-profession.

Why MRS. WARREN’S PROFESSION now? George Bernard Shaw built his life on controversy, determined to be the voice of empowerment for the disenfranchised. In a world where women have no legal rights, his play examines a woman who, coming from nothing, has become one of the most wealthy and powerful of executives running an international string of high-class brothels, keeping her life hidden from her daughter. Only when the truth is revealed does the house of cards topple. His larger question is “what price independence?”

Additional readings for the 19th season of Project Shaw will include Noel Coward’s first play (attempting to mimic Shaw), I’ll Leave It To You, on April 29; followed by Shaw’s highly entertaining Heartbreak House on May 20; and an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s theoretical romantic short story about Shakespeare’s sonnets, The Portrait Of Mr. W.H. on June 24 to help kick-off NYC Pride week. All Project Shaw readings will be presented in a concert-reading format at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater at Symphony SpaceTickets are $40 and will be available for purchase by calling 212-864-5400 or visiting www.symphonyspace.org. Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre is an accessible space. Free Chisel Tip Calligraphy Workshop

March 16 at 1pm and 3pm

207 Water Street

South Street Seaport Museum’s 19th century-style letterpress printers, Bowne & Co. present a free Chisel Tip Calligraphy Workshop on Saturday, March 16, at 1pm and 3pm, at 207 Water Street, in the South Street Seaport Historic District.

Join the professional designers at Bowne & Co. for a special workshop that explores the art and historical methodologies of calligraphic writing.

In these 90-minute workshops you will learn the fundamentals of drawing Roman capitals (majuscule) and lowercase (minuscule) letters using a chisel tip calligraphy pen. Together, as we get hands-on exploring this ancient artform, we will investigate different historical methodologies of calligraphic writing and discover typographic anatomy––the shoulders, strokes, cross bars, ascenders, descenders that constitute letters––and then experiment making our own forms.

Advanced registration is encouraged as space is limited and these workshops are likely to fill quickly. Anyone is welcome, and all supplies are included in the cost of the workshop. All participants get to take home whatever they create and their calligraphy pen to keep honing their skills. 25) ZviDance Presents the World Premiere of

THE FIELD

March 14-16, 2024 at New York Live Arts

ZviDance presents THE FIELDan original dance piece from acclaimed choreographer and artistic director, Zvi Gotheiner, with longtime collaborators Scott Killian (composer), and Mark London (lighting designer), from March 14 - 16, 2024 at 7:30pm, and March 16 at 2pm, presented at New York Live Arts, 219 W. 19th Street, NYC. THE FIELD is a continuation and deepening of Gotheiner’s thematic exploration of the collisions between humanity and nature. Tickets start at $20 for students and seniors, and $25 for general admission. For ticketing, visit https://newyorklivearts.org/event/independent-works-the-field/.

In March 2021, Artistic Director/Choreographer Zvi Gotheiner experienced a life-changing event—a stroke that paralyzed his left side. Since then he has been on a journey of exploring new ways to continue his creative

practice of making dance and working with his dancers, while managing movement limitations in his own physical body.

THE FIELD utilizes group work, duets, solos and trios to explore a sense of space that is potent with the possibility of growth, and a deep connection to it, but also a space that is possibly infected with conflicts of ownership and possession. Drawing from his roots growing up in a kibbutz in Israel, where Gotheiner used to work in the field, the piece explores relationships to other kinds of fields, including magnetic fields, battlefields, agricultural fields and other ways of defining borders and identities.

Through movement, Gotheiner explores imagery of tilling the soil, planting and harvesting to explore the rituals of man in relation to the fertile land, to create perhaps a new ritual that is contemporary and relevant for our current culture—a culture in which former rituals have been supplanted by convenience buying, purchasing our food in the supermarket, and seemingly no connection or appreciation to how food is grown or the way nature provides for us.

Dancers:

Piper Dye, Madison Elliott, Colin Heininger, Caitlin Javech, Kaylin Maggard, Leslie Merced, Joe Tennis
