What: Davis Family Butterfly Vivarium
Where: American Museum of Natural History
200 Central Park W.
New York, NY
Who: All ages
You can observe hundreds of butterflies and learn more about them inside the Davis Family Vivarium. 80 different species are included in the exhibit. Aside from adult butterflies, you can view chrysalises in the pupae indicator, and you may even see an adult butterfly emerge.
Get right up next to them. One may even land on you although you are not allowed to touch them, There's no chance of one accidentally leaving with you either as the double doors leading to the exhibit and the small waiting chamber between them ensure that no butterfly escapes.
Observe them as they fly around, eat, and more. Magnifying glasses located around the vivarium provide an even closer view.
There is also a moth exhibit within the vivarium. There are not as many species of moth as butterflies but there are several. They include the large Atlas, one of the largest insect species in the world.
The vivarium is not just for observing butterflies. It is for learning more about them as well. Interactive displays and signage within the exhibit can teach you everything you ever wanted to know about these beautiful creatures. There is even an ID board that is frequently updated to help you identify each species.
A visit to the Butterfly Vivarium requires an additional fee beyond the regular museum admission. Timed tickets must be reserved in advance. It is also important to note that since the exhibit is kept at a tropical temperature, it can get quite warm so don't overdress. However, if you are interested in butterflies, you will want to visit this fascinating, informative and colorful exhibit.
