Books: Broken Water & The New Braiding Handbook
Today we are talking about Broken Water by Barbara Lane. This is the heart-rending but inspirational true story of 11 sisters separated at birth and reunited as adults. Each of them struggled through difficult childhoods full of abuse and yet they all managed to persevere and survive. The book can be difficult to read at times and may be triggering for victims of sexual and/or physical abuse as well as anyone who had a particularly difficult childhood or has been abandoned by a parent.
The book also has strong religious undertones so if you don't like books in which the author is constantly talking about their faith, you may not enjoy this one. However, if you are looking for a book that is a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and how it is possible to overcome adversity and thrive, this may be just the book you are looking for.
Today we are recommending The New Braiding Handbook by Abby Smith. This book is not only full of different kinds of braids to try but buns, ponytails, and more as well. Extensive step-by-step instructions with pictures of each step as well as a picture of the final product are provided for each style thus making it easier to follow along and replicate. If you have long hair, and you are tired of the same old style and are looking for something new to try, this book may be just what you need. It is extremely useful and informative.
Movie: Island of the Lost Girls
Today we are recommending The Island of Lost Girls. This story of a trio of young orphan sisters swept out to sea is not the most realistic and yet it is riveting. The girls are adorable and their extraordinary resourcefulness is inspiring, and you will quickly be swept up in their adventure.
Visually this movie is stunning. It is full of bright vibrant colors and plenty of gorgeous nature shots. You can't take your eyes off it.
The story is heartwarming albeit not very believable. Knowing that the film is a family affair as the three young protagonists are actually sisters (in fact they use their real first names in the film) and are the children of the filmmakers only adds to the touching family vibes of the whole thing.
It is not a good film for very young children as it may be upsetting for them to see three young girls constantly facing mortal danger. Older children, however, should enjoy its fast-pace and exciting plot, Even adults may enjoy it if they can suspend their disbelief for a little while not worry about how realistic it is.
