As you may have noticed, we have not published a Funivity Friday post in several weeks.  While we are posting one today, we are not returning to our regular weekly posting schedule. We will try to post one whenever we can hopefully at least once a month. If you miss Funtivity Friday, and you would prefer we bring it back as regular weekly post, please reply in the comments below.

Things are always changing and evolving in this fast paced modern world we live in. The movies your children go to are not the same as the movies you grew up with. The TV shows they watch are completely new. Even children's theater has changed. It is not always about going and sitting back and watching familiar stories. One way that children's theater is changing is by exploring different kinds of stories. NYC's Rebel Playhouse, a relatively new theater group is at the forefront of this movement. In their approximately two yeas of exisitence they have presented the following shows:

Old Turtle and the Broken Truth - A play about accepting and welcoming differences

Edna the Stomper - A show about self worth, acceptance and finding one's place.

Their current show pushes the envelope even further.

The Fantastical Dangerous Journey of Q is a play about gender identity. In this show,  Q, faces the daily difficulties of preoccupied parents, bullying peers, and communications with challenging teachers, all while navigating gender identity. Fortunately, Q’s neighbor Nix has a bag of tricks that allow everyday objects to grow and be endowed with magical powers that allow Q to face larger than life threats head on. This new and innovative musical, which is recommended for ages 5 and up, will be presented at the 14th Street Y located at 344 E. 14th Street, New York, NY on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through December 16.

Theater Thursday - Sistas the Musical

We were given free tickets to Sistas the Musical for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Sistas the Musical

Where: St. Lukes Theatre

             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 13 and Up

Me - Sistas was a nice show. It is a show about the history of Black Women through songs. There is actually a plot too though. It is about these women who are packing their grandmother's attic because she recently died. They are going through all the stuff that she had in the attic and trying to find a song to sing at her funeral. The acting was good. The singing voices were lovely. The story was interesting. I learned things that I didn't know about music, and I heard songs that I never heard before. Sistas is an especially great show for women to see together. I went with my Mom, my sister and our friend. Most of the crowd seemed really familliar with the show and were really into the show. That made it made it even more enjoyable. We had a really good time at the show.

Mom - Like This One's For the Girls which we reviewed previously, Sistas the Musical tells the story of women through song. Sistas specificially focuses on the history of African American women through song. There is a little bit more of cohesive story in this show than that one. It is the story of a family that comes together to  clean out their recently deceased grandmother/great grandmother's attic and through the course of that memories are shared and secrets are revealed. Anybody who has ever had a family and in particular any woman who has ever had a family can relate to it. The show is full of popular and mostly well known songs from the 1900s through the 2000s including Stop! In the Name of Love, I Will Survive, and Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) to name just a few. There are also a few songs that may not be not as familiar at least not to everyone. The singing voices of the cast were terrific. They worked well together and really seemed believable as a family. All in all, is just a really fun show which even after running for over seven years is still playing to packed audiences.

Where-To-Wednesday - Harry Potter: A History of Magic

We were given free tickets to Harry Potter: A History of Magic for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Harry Potter: A History of Magic

Who: Tweens and Up

When: Through January 27, 2019

Me- Harry Potter: A History of Magic was an interesting exhibit. It was about the Harry Potter books, but also more about the history of magic in general. It was fascinating to learn about the history of magic and how it relates to the books. However, it would have been more enjoyable if it had more to do with the books. They did have a few fun interactive part of the exhibits. There was one part where you could predict your future using computer generated cards. There was another place where you had to put together a potion. My sister failed, and she had to try again. I succeeded on my first try. There was a crystal ball but it really didn't seem to do anything. There were some nice pictures of the characters in the books and some memorabilia like brooms and costumes. They was a whole huge section of Harry Potter merchandise for sale. It was cool stuff though. They had sweaters and hats for every Hogwarts house and lots of little figurines and stuffed animals and much more. Even though Harry Potter: A History of Magic many not be the  best possible Harry Potter exhibit ever,  if you really love Harry Potter, you will probably enjoy it.

Mom - Harry Potter:  A History of Magic, the exhibit currently at the New York Historical Society is quite extensive. It is also in a very tight space and can be very crowded. Accordingly, reservations are not only recommended, but they are required. This also makes it not a very good place for babies or very young children. They probably wouldn't have much interest in the exhibit anyway because if you really want to get the full experience, there is quite a lot of information to read. Much of the exhibit is not specifically about Harry Potter but about real history and how it relates to things in the Harry Potter universe. It was interesting but at times there was too much of it, and it would have been better to have more  of the exhibit directly about the Harry Potter series and less historical information. There were a lot of really exciting artifacts that were part of the exhibit. There was original artwork, novel pages with JK Rowlings notes, letters from the publisher to JK Rowling, and a model of the  Hogwarts Express to name just a few.  The exhibit was so vast that it is hard to remember it all since no pictures were permitted in the main part of the exhibit.The pictures here are all from the outer perimeter of the exhibit where photographs were permitted. If you are a huge Harry Potter fan, and you are looking for an exhibit that solely focuses on the Harry Potter franchise, you may be a little disappointed. However, there is still enough directly related to Harry Potter in this exhibit that you won't want to miss it.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: The Field, Movies:The King and I: From the Palladium; Misc.: UnPlugged 5K

We may been given one or more of the below mentioned products as well as access to an advance screening of The King and I: From the Palladium for free for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: The Field by Ian Dawson

Mom - Today I am recommending The Field by Ian Dawson. This novel based on a true incident from the author's childhood is about a teenage boy who is kidnapped and assaulted by a couple of older boys in a field near his home. It is the story of two opposing friendships. Daniel and Kyle have a loving unconditional friendship. When Daniel disappears, Kyle is determined to stop at nothing to assure that his friend returns home safely. Austin and James have an evil toxic friendship. Their friendship is based on Austin's control of James through James' fear of him. The novel  also presents a very accurate portrayal of male adolescence. There are lots of YA novels that deal frankly with female adolescence, but there  are not nearly as many that deal as well with male adolescence. In fact,off the top of my head, I can't think of any. However, this novel is not just a manual about friendships and growing up. It is still a great story.  It is like  an action movie in book form. From start to finish, it is an exciting heartstopping ride.


Movies: The King and I: From the Palladium

Mom - Today I am recommending The King and I: From the Palladium. If you never had the priviledge of seeing Kelli Ohara's Tony winning performance a few years ago in Lincoln Center's revivial of Rodgers and Hammerstein's  classic The King and I, you are in luck. The show was captured during its recent performances at the London Palladium and will be presented in movie theaters for two days only on Thursday November 29 and Tuesday December 4. That Tony award was much deserved, Kelli absolutely shine's in the role and you won't want to miss her performance. In addition to Kelly, most of the original cast is also in this production including a fierce Ken Watanabe as the King and  a resilent Ruthie Ann Miles  as the King's head wife, Lady Thiang. The latter also won a Tony for her portrayal of  the role on Broadway.  Her big song in the show Something Wonderful has never sounded better than when she sings it. The show is full of some of Rodgers and Hammerstein's best songs including the beautiful lover's duet, I Have Dreamed; the wistful, Hello Young Lovers;  and the delightfully fun Getting to Know You. The story about people from different cultures coming together and learning to respect one another is also very timely. All in all, it's a terrific production of the show that you will definitely want to see.

Misc: UnPlugged 5K

Mom - Today I am recommending the UnPlugged 5K, a wireless portable charger from MyCharge. This multi purpose charger can be used with a wide variety of devices. If you have a Qi enabled device, you can charge it wirelessly by just placing the device on top of the charger. However, even if you don't have a Qi enabled device, you can still use this lighweight easy to carry around charger by using the built in charger port. If you do have at least one Qi enabled device, you can even charge two devices at once: one wirelessly and the other by using the charger port.  The  UnPlugged 5K is definitely a very versatile and useful charger to have.

New York City High School Students and Hamilton the musical

What: New York City High Schoolers Perform Their Own Hamilton Inspired Original Material

Where: Richard Rodgers Theater

             226 W. 46th St.

             New York, NY

When: November 14, 2018

Students from 17 different high schools participated in a unit on Hamilton in their classrooms. As part of this unit, they  were able to create their own poems, songs, rap, poetry, scenes, and monlogues related to Hamilton and/or the period of history covered by Hamilton the musical. The culmination of this program was the opportunity for the students and their teachers to attend a recent matinee of Hamilton on Broadway. In addition, some of the students were actually able to perform their own material on the stage of the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The display of talent by these students was awe-inspiring. For a complete list of performances, see below.  The event was truly a delight for anyone lucky enough to be in attendence.

BroadwayCon and the Broadway League Foundation are pleased to announce the finalists for the BroadwayCon 2019 Star To Be talent competition. BroadwayCon and the Broadway League Foundation have also announced today that the 2018 Jimmy® Award winners Reneé Rapp and DEAR EVAN HANSEN’s Andrew Barth Feldman will perform during the BroadwayCon Star To Be competition on Saturday, January 12, while the judges deliberate.

The ten Star To Be finalist acts feature solo, duet, and group performances with performers ranging in age from 11 years old to 33 from across the country: Terrence Berry and Jessica Magdosko (Asbury Park, NJ); Kenneth Gaddie (North Little Rock, AR); Glynnis Goff (Maplewood, NJ); Cayla Hall (Hyattsville, MD); Kristin Bria Hopkins (Virginia Beach, VA); Satya Kutsko (Lamy, New Mexico); Natalie Schroeder (Orinda, CA); Brooklynn Stanley (Washington Court House, OH); Brenna Hutto, Kayla Hutto, and Katherine Palm (Barnwell, SC); and Ashley Espejo, Marlene Fernandez, Jazailis Gual, Najalis Gual, Ashley Henson, and Jada Williams (Belleville, NJ).

Andrew Barth Feldman will be playing Evan Hansen in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway starting January 30, 2019. He won the 2018 Roger Rees Award in New York and went on to win the 2018 Jimmy Award for Best Performance by an Actor, from the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Andrew is a proud survivor of the BroadwayCon Blizzard of 2016 and has attended every BroadwayCon since, last year conducting the When You Help Others: Theatre For A Cause panel representing his theatre company, Zneefrock Productions, as well as winning the first annual Lip Sync Battle with his team, the Big Bois.

Reneé Rapp is a graduate of Northwest School of the Arts, where she worked under the Excellence in Theatre Education Award-winning educator Corey Mitchell (presented by the Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University). Reneé is the 2018 Jimmy Award winner for Best Performance by an Actress and 2018 Blumey Award winner for Best Actress. Reneé is a Pop/R&B recording artist currently working on her EP to be released soon. Reneé’s most recent performances include the Novant Health Thanksgiving Day Parade in Charlotte, North Carolina; Broadway Back to School at Feinstein’s 54 Below in New York City; the 2018 Supergirl Pro Surf and Music Festival in Oceanside California; and Wendla in Spring Awakening at Theatre Charlotte. Does she find the community she’s been searching for? Or does her disillusionment drag her down like quicksand? With auto-biographical nods to Larsen’s own life, Regina Robbins’ jazz and gospel-infused adaptation drives a compelling story that transcends traditional narratives of race and gender.

reeling -> healing is an exploration of feelings of frustration and helplessness that can occur as a result of the constant barrage of bad news and hatred that reaches our country. This two-part work discusses how audiences deal with these emotions to find solace while taking action. Original music by Kevin Keller adds to a sense of urgency and the need for community, working in tandem with the choreography to immerse the audience in a fully formed world. Performers and audience connect via The Emotional Architecture of a Bridge, an original concept drawn and created by Teresa Fellion, that is uncovered in the piece via set elements and audience interaction with text. Furthering thoughts of togetherness, which has been an overarching theme in all past BodyStories pieces, reeling -> healing exposes the more vulnerable sides of ourselves through dance.

ABOUT PETER & THE WOLF

In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned to write a light-hearted piece for children that would introduce the instruments and sounds of the orchestra. He was given a libretto, but he didn't like it, so he came up with a new story. The music was completed in a week. Peter & the Wolf was the result, and it is a work still loved by children and adults. The story tells how Peter, against his grandfather's will, opens the park gate, ventures into the big green meadow, and ultimately manages to liberate the City from the scary wolf. Peter captures the wolf with the help of a bird, his friend, and hands him over to the hunter, with a specific request: to take the wolf to the zoo. Each character in the story is represented by an instrument. The narrator reads the story between the musical sections.
