I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Theater Thursday - Harmony

We were given complimentary tickets to Harmony for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own. Some parts of this review may have appeared in a previous post.

What: Harmony

Where: Ethel Barrymore Theatre
             243 W. 47th
             New York, New York

Who: Recommended for Ages 12 and Up

Harmony is the true story of the German all-male musical sextet, The Comedian Harmonists who were one of the most popular performing groups during the period just prior to World War I. They ran into trouble during the war as three of the group's members were Jewish and one was married to a Jew. This is not a typical Holocaust story with a completely tragic ending, however.

The music for the show was written by beloved pop music icon, Barry Manilow. He and his co-writer, Bruce Sussman, who wrote the book and lyrics for the show, have been working on the show for quite a long time. It was originally presented at the La Jolla Playhouse as far back as 1997, and there have been several other regional productions since then.

The show is quite compelling. The music is mostly good and the title number is particularly catchy and will probably stick in your mind long after you've seen the show. The first act is mostly cheerful and happy although there is a dark undercurrent of what is to come running through it.  The second act will take you on a rollercoaster of emotion.

The six actors in the roles of the Comedian Harmonists in the current production all originated their roles in last year's Off-Broadway run of the show.  Their performances are just as incredible now as then (although, unfortunately, we did not get to see Danny Kornfeld in the role of Young Rabbi this time around, More on that later).   Their harmonies are just as beautiful and their dancing is even more exuberant now on the larger Broadway stage.

It did feel like a little something was missing without Danny Kornfeld in the show, however. While Matthew Mucha who took on the role in the performance was fine, Kornfeld just brings a little something extra to the part. Maybe, it's because he is actually Jewish and therefore it gives his performance a bit more intensity although truthfully, we don't know if that is the reason or even if Mucha is Jewish or not. However, Mucha didn't have as much chemistry with Sierra Bogus who plays the character's wife either.

Chip Zien and Sierra Boggess who were also both in last year's Off-Broadway production are as wonderful as ever. He plays the older version of Rabbi who narrates the story and also appears in a number of other small roles. His performance is alternately delightfully amusing and utterly heartbreaking. Boggess' voice is as beautiful as ever and her performance is touching. A welcome addition to the cast is Julie Benko in the role of Ruth. Her feisty performance as the rebellious Ruth is also quite moving.

With tensions high and hate crimes on the rise, this is the perfect time for this musical. It shows how bad things can get if we let them and how much better they can be when despite our differences we come together and work to together and try to appreciate each other. That is something we need much more of both in this country and in the world at large today.

And that's our view. For more about Harmony or to purchase tickets, visit harmonyanewmusical.com

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Sinister Secrets of the Seaport Walking Tour

We were given a complimentary Sinister Secrets of the Seaport Walking Tour for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Sinister Secrets of the Seaport Walking Tour

Where: Meet at Ryan Maguire's Bar and Restaurant
                          28 Cliff St.
                          New York, NY

Who: Recommended for 13 and Up

If you are interested in learning about the darker side of the South Street Seaport, you are definitely going to want to take a Sinister Secrets of the Seaport Walking Tour. If you are slightly squeamish, you needn't worry. The tales you will be told are dark but not extremely gory so you won't have to worry about your head being filled with horrifying images that you won't be able to get rid of. For this reason, the tour is suitable for children but not for young children (under 13).

On this extremely engrossing tour, you will be told stories about a rat fighting ring, the mafia in the Fulton Fish Market, assorted murders, and more. You will learn fascinating facts as well like why the Brooklyn Bridge was built where it was and what led to the passage of the first anti-animal cruelty laws. It is definitely one of those tours where you will have to use your imagination a lot as there will be more telling than showing as most of the stories shared took place a long time ago and things have changed a lot. However, your guide will have plenty of pictures to share to supplement the stories you are being told (and don't worry there aren't any bloody, gross, or disgusting pictures or anything that is going to keep anybody up at night). Whether you are a fan of true crime stories or you are just interested in taking a unique look at the history of the hidden underbelly of the South Street Seaport, you will definitely enjoy this compelling tour.

And that's our view. For more about the Sinister Secrets of the Seaport Walking Tour or to book a tour, visit southstreetseaportmuseum.org/sinister-secrets.

Tips for Tuesday - Books - Public Private My Life with Joe Papp at the Public Theatre & The Folio Society's Holiday 2023 Collection, Movie: Christmas Harmony, & Misc.: Crafty Jackie's Sudsy Succulents

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any books, products, and/or any other visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: Public Private: My Life with Joe Papp at the Public Theatre
                                                   &
The Folio Society's Holiday 2023 Collection

Today we are recommending Public/Private My Life with Joe Papp at the Public Theatre. This is a fascinating look at theater impresario, Joe Papp founder of both Shakespeare in the Park and the Public Theatre as seen through the eyes of a woman who was not only the developer of new plays at the Public but also his wife. The book not only delves thoroughly into the history of the public theatre and many of the famous plays and musicals that began there but also into the life of Joseph Papp himself including what he was like as a person, what he really cared about and so much more.

Numerous actors, directors, choreographers, and more who were a part of Shakespeare in the Park and/or the Public Theater during Joe's tenure are discussed as well and/or quoted. The book even includes a collection of extensive lists of actors, directors, etc. who were a part of the Public Theater in some way during Joe's time there. Whether you are a theater fan, a history fan or you just want to know more about Shakespeare in the Park, the Public Theatre, and/or Joe Papp, you are definitely going to want to read this quite engrossing book.

Books: The Folio Society's Holiday 2023 Collection

Book Cover
Slip-In Case

Today we are recommending The Folio Society's Holiday 2023 Collection. The Folio Society produces gorgeous collector's edition hardcover copies of classic books and more. Each book cover and slip-in protective bookcase is beautifully illustrated and depending on the book there may be incredible-looking illustrated drawings and/or pictures inside the book as well.

This year's Christmas Collection includes The Night Before Christmas with a glow-in-the-dark slip-in case, the first illustrated edition of The Color Purple and so much more. These lovely books are the perfect gift for any book lover on your holiday list. For more about The Folio Society and their complete collection, visit www.foliosociety.com/usa

Movie: Perfect Harmony

Today we are recommending Perfect Harmony. When her rockstar boyfriend dumps her right before Christmas, songwriter, Harmony returns to her hometown where she meets Luke and young, Weston and gets sucked into helping put on the annual town holiday show.  The only thing original about this story is the handful of new holiday songs that were written for it. Everything else about it is cliche and/or predictable, and yet it is still quite a touching and heartwarming film. If you are looking for cute romance,  the sweetness of real and found family, and/or warm holiday vibes, you will probably enjoy it.

Perfect Harmony will be available on VOD starting Friday, December 1, 2023.

Misc.:  Crafty Jackie's Sudsy Succulents

Today we are recommending Crafty Jackie's Sudsy Succulents. Sudsy Succulents are a set of 5 soaps in various shapes. They allegedly contain a calming eucalyptus scent although we did not notice that effect when using them. However, they do a great job of cleaning your hands without making them feel sticky, and they are a pretty addition to any bathroom. Sudsy Succulents are available from the maker's marketplace Treppie.com. For more information, visit treppie.com/bath-body/crafty-jackie.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

More Theater Monday - Big Apple Circus and Circus-Theatre Roncalli Journey to the Rainbow

We were given complimentary tickets to The Big Apple Circus for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Big Apple Circus

Where: Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park,
              W. 62nd Between Amsterdam & Broadway
              New York, NY

Who: All ages

When: Through January 15, 2024

Even though Nik Wallenda of the famous daredevil family of highwire artists is still part owner of the Big Apple Circus, this year he did not perform in the circus himself as he has the last few years. Instead, the Big Apple Circus teamed up with Circus-Theatre Roncalli for a new production called A Journey to the Rainbow. Circus-Theatre Roncalli is a European circus that has been around since the 1970s.

While there were acts similar to acts that have appeared in The Big Apple Circus before including jugglers and a couple of trapeze artists none of the specific performers or groups were familiar from previous years. However, it is unclear if all of the performers were from Circus-Theatre Roncalli or if any of them had actually previously performed with The Big Apple Circus. Either way, the performances were all very enjoyable. Performers also included a woman who juggled with her feet, a clown magician, and many more.

Unlike in previous years, however, there was no ringmaster and none of the acts were introduced before they performed. In the last few years there had even been videos before each performance where you got to know a little about the performers in their own words and how they came to be a part of the circus. Without this, the show lost a little of its intimacy and the feeling that you were really getting to know the performers. However, it is still an exciting show full of breathtaking stunts and amazing performances, and it is still quite entertaining for all ages.

And that's our view. For more about Big Apple Circus and Circus-Theatre Roncalli's Journey to the Rainbow or to purchase tickets, visit https://bigapplecircus.com.

Interrelated scenes over space and time reveal the friction between what Me wants and what she’s inherited. 20)THE ORCHESTRA NOW OPENS

2023-24 SEASON

OF ITS SIGHT & SOUND SERIES

AT THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART

WITH

COPLAND, CULTURE & POLITICS IN THE 1930S

Music Director Leon Botstein leads TŌN in the first of three concerts this season in its popular Sight & Sound series at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Sunday, December 3 at 2 PM. The program surveys works by Aaron Copland written in the 1930s, a time of political and social turmoil in the United States. Throughout the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, art and music mirrored the struggling nation’s search for hope, expressing the struggle of the era’s marginalized masses.

Conductor and music historian Leon Botstein explores the parallels between orchestral music and the visual arts for all Sight & Sound performances. Each program is accompanied by on-screen artworks and musical excerpts performed by The Orchestra Now, followed by a full performance and audience Q&A.

Aaron CoplandBilly the Kid Suite

Artwork from the exhibition Art for the Millions: American Culture and Politics in the 1930s

Aaron Copland mixed everyday Americana tunes with classical music in an unprecedented way. His 1935 Statements, written when the composer was becoming more politically active, consists of six individualized short movements titled Militant, Cryptic, Dogmatic, Subjective, Jingo, and Prophetic. The first complete performance of all six statements was not heard until 1942, led by Dimitri Mitropoulos with the New York Philharmonic. Copland was asked by Lincoln Kirstein and Eugene Loring of Ballet Caravan to compose music for a cowboy ballet about Billy the KidThe resulting work was inspired by western folk tunes. Using sections of the Ballet, Copland created the Suite, which is one of the composer's most popular pieces. Both works earned him a reputation as the United States’ “populist” composer.

Art for the Millions: American Culture and Politics in the 1930s is on view at The Met Fifth Avenue September 7–December 10, 2023 in galleries 691–693.

All Tickets, priced at $30 - $50include same-day museum admission and may be purchased online here, by calling The Met at 212.570.3949, or at The Great Hall box office at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Join the South Street Seaport Museum for a live-narrated screening of the documentary All Hands on Deck: A Modern-Day High Seas Adventure to the Far Side of the WorldThe free event will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at 2:30pmseaportmuseum.org/rose

Come aboard the tall ship Wavertree for a unique experience that will bring to life the documentary film “All Hands on Deck: A Modern-Day High Seas Adventure to the Far Side of the World.”

Join us for an immersive event where you'll become part of the captivating journey of a diverse crew of 30 passionate individuals, including our narrator Will Sofrin. “All Hands on Deck” will show how the fearless team set sail on a daring voyage, tasked with transporting a replica of the 18th century warship Rose from its home in Newport, Rhode Island, to the bustling heart of Hollywood for use in the 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. We will see how the crew effectively went back in time to bring to life the old ways of the maritime world, and their hard work on the high seas.

The documentary illustrates the full experience, including an actual dismasting of the ship––which we will see while on Wavertree, who experienced a dismasting that ended her sailing career. You will be on the edge of your seat as we watch the crew confront unpredictable storm-tossed seas.

The film runs for 32 minutes, offering an intense and captivating narrative. Registration is encouraged for this free event but walkups will be accommodated as possible. A Q&A, book signing, and free wine or sparkling water will follow the presentation. It can be chilly this time of year and this program takes place below the main deck of Wavertree, which is not a temperature-controlled environment. Make sure to bring a coat and dress accordingly.

Will Sofrin's book, All Hands on Deck: A Modern-Day High Seas Adventure to the Far Side of the World, will be available at the event for purchase and author signing.

25) Theater Resources Unlimited and Parity Productions

present

Town Hall (Live) - The Trans and Gender-Expansive Experience in Theater,

Thursday, November 29, 2023

Networking at 6:30pm ET, Open Forum at 7:00pm ET

Polaris North Studio, 245 W. 29th Street, 4th Floor, NYC

A return to live monthly panels/discussions,

with a simultaneous streaming for friends outside of New York City.

Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) is partnering with Parity Productions to offer The Trans and Gender-Expansive Experience in Theater, a live town hall. Moderated by Jaye Hunt (they/them), multi-disciplinary theater artist and literary manager of Parity Productions, with co-hosts Elisa Crespo (she/her), trans Latina activist, nonprofit executive, politician, executive director of the New Pride Agenda; Gylanni Carrington (they/them), inter-disciplinary artist; Nat Kelley DiMario (they/them), queer & trans multi-disciplinary theater artist, stage manager, and storyteller; Anessa Marie (she/her), music director, conductor, pianist, orchestrator and lyricist/composer; Futaba Shioda (he/him), trans Asian actor and cultural worker, and Garnet Williams (she/they), actor, singer, Parity artist.

TRU monthly conversations continue about issues of current cultural significance. We further expand our conversation about cultural assumptions and how they undercut equal treatment, as well as the challenges of being gender-expansive or trans in our supposedly enlightened business. The fight for equal treatment is a tragic part of our current political environment and continues to influence and impact the arts and specifically for us, theater.  We will look at the ongoing struggle with conscious and unconscious assumptions that limit opportunities for non-binary and trans artists, as well as create an uncomfortable environment for many. We will consider whether the experience of these issues differs from generation to generation and examine ways in which generations can help and influence each other.  There's much work to be done, and it all starts with awareness.  Attendees are encouraged to talk about their own experiences with discrimination. TRU offers this as an opportunity for everyone to learn from actual experiences and find ways to support each other while exploring initiatives that might bring us closer to genuine respect and acceptance.

Doors open at 6:30pm for networking and roundtable introductions of everyone in the room – come prepared with your best 20-second summary of who you are, and what you need. The Open Forum will start at 7:00pm. Free for TRU members and not-for-profit theater companies; $15 for non-members. To register, visit https://truonline.org/events/town-hall-gender-expansive/.
