I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Tips for Tuesday - The Sunflower House & The Tony Awards; Movie: In Flight

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any books, products, and/or any other visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: The Sunflower House & The Tony Awards

Today we are recommending The Sunflower House by Adrian Allegri. Although there are numerous, World War II-related stories and many have quite a few similarities,  this one is quite different. It is about the Lebensborn program, a state-run program to increase the number of pure Aryan births.

A young Jewish woman named, Allina, is forced to hide her identity and work in Hochland Home, one of the state-run Lebensborn homes. When she finds out about the less-than-perfect children, who are being neglected, she is determined to help them. She joins forces with an officer named Karl to save as many children as possible and soon finds herself falling for him, but Karl has also some secrets.

This is quite a unique and interesting story that is very emotion-stirring. It is a times incredibly moving, at times heartbreaking, and at times even horrifying. Allina and Karl's love story is touchingly bittersweet.

They are also both quite admirable as individuals. They are caring, strong-willed, and tenacious. They do what they can to do what is right despite their circumstances. The real world nears more people like them.

Today we are recommending The Tony Awards by Eila Mell. This is an extremely interesting, informative, and quite extensive book. It lists every single Tony Award winner in every single category through 2023.  There are also numerous quotes from Tony winners regarding what it was like to win a Tony,  how it changed their lives, and more. There are excerpts from some of the winners' acceptance speeches ranging from the quite poignant to the very amusing. Plus, there are plenty of pictures. It is a definite must-have for any true theater lover's library.

Movies: In Flight

Today we are talking about In Flight. A woman named, Claire has a a drink in an airport and wakes up on a flight having no idea how she got there. Then, she receives a message telling her that someone is planning to take down the flight and she needs to find out who and stop them.

You never really get to know any of the characters that much in this film not even the many characters which makes it hard to care. Plus, even though things keep happening,  it doesn't really feel like the plot is advancing, but rather going around in circles.

The best thing about the movie is its unpredictability and its surprising ending. Plus even though it may not be the most believable ending in the world, it still seems somewhat plausible.

In Flight will be available digitally and on Cable VOD, this Friday, November 15, 2024.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

More Theater Monday - Left on Tenth & Teeth

We received complimentary tickets to Left on Tenth for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Left on Tenth

Where: James Earl Jones Theatre
              138 W. 48th St.
              New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 10 and Up

When: Through February 2, 2024

Left on Tenth is the story of writer and producer, Delia Ephron, based on her memoir of the same name. It tells of how she found love again after the death of her first husband from cancer and how she found new life again after her own bout with the disease. Delia is played by Julianna Margulies. who is best known for her roles in TV's ER and The Good Wife. As both the main character and narrator, she is warm, and inviting, and makes the audience feel welcome into her story. Peter Gallagher plays Peter Rutter, the man Delia falls in love with. He is full of charm and charisma and it is no surprise that Delia would fall for him surely any woman would.

The human cast is completed by Peter James Francis and Kate MacCluggage. The pair swivel in and out of several diverse roles and do an excellent job of making each distinct and different. There are also a couple of adorable dogs in the show who even get to take curtain calls. Despite the element of cuteness and aw! added by the dogs, the show is clearly not for children due to its subject matter.

The story is a little slow getting started. There is way too much exposition at the beginning. It picks up a little when the two main characters begin exchanging emails. Once they meet it hits its stride and fully draws the audience in because, despite the heaviness of some of its subject matter, which some may find triggering,  it is a sweet and touching story at heart.

And that's our view. For more about Left on Tenth or to purchase tickets, visit leftontenthbroadway.com

We were received complimentary tickets to Teeth for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own. This is an adapted version of an early post which has been amended as necessary to fit the current production.

What: Teeth

Where: New World Stages
             340 W. 50th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 14 and Up

Teeth, based on the movie of the same name, is not a show for the fainthearted. It is full of blood, gore, and even dismemberment even more so now that has transferred to a bigger stage than previously. It includes theatrical fog & haze, strobe effects, extreme amounts of theatrical blood and gore, pyrotechnics, intense violence including sexual violence and other sexual content, and adult language. Accordingly, if any of these things bother you, you will want to avoid it.  It also treats religion quite sardonically which also may offend some people. Others, however, will be drawn to it because of its extremely female-powered center.

The show revolves around a young girl named Dawn, who has been raised extremely piously. She discovers she has teeth in her nether regions, and when men try to hurt her she can bite back with a vengeance. At first, frightened and confused by her newfound dominance, she quickly embraces it.

Propelled by a hard-driving score and loaded with vigorous choreography, the show is filled with a fierce intensity that never lets up.  Alyse Alan Louis is excellent in the role of Dawn. She so skillfully manages her character's transformation from a somewhat awkward insecure girl to a fierce warrior that it feels like they are two completely different people both of whom she plays brilliantly. Plus, her singing is effortless. This is clearly her show and she takes charge of it.

A new addition to the cast in the current production is Andy Karl who is savage in his portrayal of the fire and brimstone preacher who rules his flock with an iron hand and sometimes a belt. While the characters he plays always seem to have an edge, this one is razor-sharp and lacks the innate goodness of most of his previous characters.

This is undoubtedly not a show that everyone can appreciate. Although some parts of it are hard to take for anyone, other parts, some might find somewhat cathartic and/or oddly comforting, especially in light of recent events.

And that's our view. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit teeththemusical.com

1) Agamemnon: The Circle of Blood

Agamemnon: The Circle of Blood presents a powerful monologue enhanced by cinematic and media technology, blending classical storytelling with documentary realism. This adaptation delves into power struggles, warfare, and societal injustices, exploring the complexities of the West-Middle East relationship and the urgent call to break free from cycles of violence and war.

Witness the raw power of Clytemnestra as she navigates loss, betrayal, and the relentless cycle of bloodshed. Can we break free from the compulsion to repeat history's mistakes? How is it possible to stop the never-ending circle of blood? This production bridges ancient tragedy with contemporary issues and politics, prompting reflection on the West's relationship with the Middle East, the impact of colonialism, and the quest for peace in a world torn by conflict.

When an artist sets out to investigate the line between art and madness, he finds himself in a dangerous dance with existential questions:

Why create art?
Does it heal or harm us?
Must artists suffer?
What’s the price of so-called “genius?”

Methods in Madness is a theatrical experiment + autopsy + installation that aims to examine the creative process and correlations between mental health and artistry. Helmed by multidisciplinary artist Corey Allen—whose visual art and performances, inspired by the works of James Baldwin, Beauford Delaney, Nina Simone, and Julius Eastman, anchor the installation—Methods in Madness will evolve daily.

She reunites with her students as they were – playful, funny, and full of life and potential – real kids with bright futures. Equal part memorial and essential history, ROOM 1214 overflows with truths both uncomfortable and necessary, offering a moving reminder that the best way to honor the past is to learn from it.

Thistles keenly explores family secrets, queerness, and the desperate desire to be accepted. Tragedy lurks as emotions are buried under ancestral floorboards.

Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.

New York Premiere

Caress them in a way that hurts a little

Choreography by Omar Román de Jesús

Music by OKRAA “Ola De Luz”

To say Caress them in a way that hurts a little is to embrace the paradox of intimacy: the simultaneous desire for gentleness and the need for a touch that stirs the soul. It speaks to the complexity of human connection, where vulnerability and passion intersect. This work evokes a longing for a depth of sensation that transcends mere physicality, delving into the realms of emotional intimacy and the bittersweet ecstasy of love.

Like those playground kids at midnight

Choreography by Omar Román de Jesús

Music by Jesse Scheinin

In a world that often seeks to stifle individuality, Like Those Playground Kids at Midnight stands as a beacon of defiance, encouraging all to embrace their uniqueness and challenge the boundaries that confine them. It invites us to traverse the enigmatic landscapes of desire, identity, and aspiration, all while advocating for the liberation of the soul.

Los Perros del Barrio Colosal

Choreography by Omar Román de Jesús

Music: Homenaje al Gran Lucho by Lucho Bermudez and Liebestraume, S541/R211: No. 3: Nocturne in A-Flat Mayor by Franz Liszt

Through the exaggerated mannerisms of daytime television, the 8 characters of Los Perros del Barrio Colosal take us on a wild romp through the challenges of creative decision making. Diving dramatically into the adventure of an imagination yet to be physicalized, they ask us to consider the far side of the moments when our ideas threaten, with disjointed urgency, to swallow us whole.
