I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Love You, Mean It & Every Time I Go On Vacation Someone Dies; & Movie: Main Character Energy

This post may contain affiliate links for which we may be compensated.

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any books, products, and/or any other visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: Love You, Mean It & Every Time I Go On Vacation Someone Dies

Today, we are recommending Love You, Mean It by Jilly Gagnon. Ellie Greco is forced to give up pursuing her dream career as a costume designer to work in her family's deli which is about to be made obsolete by a huge conglomerate. To save the business, she reluctantly joins forces with Theo Taylor, whose father owns the company trying to put her family out of business.

This is a cute romance with very likable characters. If you like trope-filled books this one has plenty of them, including, fake fiancee, enemies to lovers, amnesia, and more. Plus, it's well-written, moves along quickly, and it's just an all-around highly satisfying read.

Today, we are recommending Every Time I Go on Vacation Someone Dies by Catherine Mack. All Eleanor wants is to get through her book tour and plan a new book killing off her main character, Conner Smith, thus eliminating her reluctant attachment to the real Connor. Then someone starts trying to Connor for real and Eleanor too.

This fun book reads like a play with the central character constantly breaking the fourth wall and directly addressing the reader. It is full of quirky characters and generous doses of humor. If you like your mysteries with a touch of irreverence, you may enjoy this one. However it is important to note that this is the first book in a planned series so if you don't want to get sucked up into reading a whole series, you might want to skip it.

Today we are recommending Main Character Energy. This short film about a pair of actors auditioning for a film amusingly takes on gender-neutral names, the whole audition process, and more in the span of about 12 minutes.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

More Theater Monday - Staff Meal

We were given complimentary tickets to Staff Meal for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Staff Meal

 Where: Playwrights Horizon
               416 W. 42nd St.
               New York, NY

Who: Ages 13 and Up

When: Through May 24, 2024

Staff Meal is at first just a slightly offbeat play. A couple notices each other at a coffee shop and exchange hellos. Then the action switches to the next day. This happens several times. Finally, the pair actually get up the courage to speak to each other beyond exchanging hellos, and they go out walking and end up at this restaurant.  Here they engage in a very mundane but also incredibly odd conversation.  Up to this point. the show is hilariously funny even though the plot does not advance at all, and it isn't even clear if there really is a plot.

After that, the show just goes completely bizarrely off the rails. All semblance of any sort of plot completely disappears.  The show bounces around between several different characters and nothing really happens. The funniest and most relatable moment occurs when an audience member loudly starts questioning what is happening and whether there is actually anything happening at all . It turns out that there is both more and less to this moment than at first appears.

There are funny moments, throughout the show and the performances are generally good. They do their best with the material or lack thereof with which they are given. There is also nothing that necessarily makes the show unsuitable or offensive for younger audiences.  Due to its strangeness and lack of plot, we recommend it for slightly older audiences with better attention spans. However, on the whole, the show will leave you wondering where the last hour and a half of your life went and questioning what you chose to do with it. On the other hand, if you like a show that completely subverts all your expectations albeit in a quite bizarre way, you may enjoy it.

And that's our review. For more about Staff Meal or to purchase, tickets www.playwrightshorizons.org/shows/plays/staff-meal

Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.

12) Windrush Secret

A black Caribbean diplomat. A white far-right party leader. A white government official. Based on the 2018 real-world controversy that shook Britain, they each explain the “Windrush Scandal” from wildly opposing perspectives.

Half a million people migrated to Britain from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1973. In 2018 new immigration laws were passed and thousands of this so-called Windrush generation were deprived of their liberty, wrongfully deported, dismissed from their jobs, lost their homes, and denied services such as healthcare after decades of being citizens of the UK.

In a powerful, stripped-down performance, Rodreguez King-Dorset plays all three characters, switching nimbly between each one. Windrush Secret doesn’t shy away from the legacy of empire, imperialism, or the outcry of broken promises a nation makes to its people. The result is a provocative unmasking of a horrific calamity in history that forced a nation to look in the mirror and reconsider its path.

13) Stereophonic

Stereophonic mines the agony and the ecstasy of creation as it zooms in on a music studio in 1976. Here, an up-and-coming rock band recording a new album finds itself suddenly on the cusp of superstardom. The ensuing pressures could spark their breakup — or their breakthrough. In Stereophonic, Adjmi invites the audience to immerse themselves—with fly-on-the-wall intimacy—in the powder keg process of a band on the brink of blowing up.

Co-facilitated by Lynnie Godfrey, president of the League of Professional Theater Women, and TRU executive director Bob Ost.

TRU monthly conversations address issues of current cultural significance, with a particular focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. This month we consider an often neglected aspect of theater's move towards greater inclusion: accessibility and accommodation for both artists and audiences with disabilities. For theater and all of the arts to truly reflect the human experience and represent our populations fully, it is important to be conscious of both the spectrum of disabilities and the limitless ability of artists.
