Monthly Mash-up for April, 2018 Macy's Flower Show 2018 and Maureen McGovern at Birdland Jazz Club

We may have been given free tickets to one or more of the below mentioned venues for free for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

 
 
Me - My topic for this month is Macy's Flower Show. We recently went to Macy's yearly flower show. It was a lot of fun. The theme was fairytales. However, it wasn't real fairytales. It was just one made up for the flower show. There were different parts of the story located at different parts of the exhibit. There were pages from books with flowers attached hanging from the wall. There was a dragon breathing fire but the fire was flowers. It was really cool! There was a tree with a face. There was a waterfall with flowers. A lot of the flowers were purple and they were really pretty. There was a cart that said Traveler. It had flowers in it too. In the window of the store they had animal shaped bushes. There was a bunny, a bird,  and a frog. There was a giant snow globe. You could go inside it, and there was confetti to throw around, and they took a video so it looked like you were really in  a snow globe. On the whole, it was beautiful and fun.

Mom - My topic for this month is Maureen McGovern's concert at Birdland. I recently had the opportunity to attend my first concert at New York City's famous Birdland Jazz Club. The venue was great. It is located right in the heart of midtown at 44th Street between 8th and 9th.  It was small although it seemed much bigger and more spacious than some other similar venues I have visited. Unlike at other venues, they did not seat people at tables with other people whom they don't know, and they even had small tables for one. However, the show was not a full house so I am not sure if this would still be true if it were. There was a $10.00 food and drink minimum per person at the club. However, this is very reasonable compared to some of the other clubs in the New York City area. The food was good although I only had the dessert. The show was delightful. Although, Ms. McGovern did not really sing a lot of the songs she is known for or any of the songs from the Broadway shows she was in, it was still an enjoyable show. The songs were mostly well known recognizable songs including a number of songs from shows and/or movies. The set included a medley of Disney songs and a medley of Wizard of Oz songs. Her voice sounded nice, and she had a good rapport with the audience. The highlight of the concert by far was when she ended the show with a rendition of arguably her most famous hit, The Morning After, the theme song fromThe Poseidon Adventure. All in all, it was a very nice evening in a engaging venue.

Producer Stacey Mindich is pleased to announce that Dear Evan Hansen will continue its partnership with ArtsConnection, NYC’s leading arts-in-education organization, for a second year, thanks to the funding of producer and owner of San Francisco’s Curran theatre, Carole Shorenstein Hays. This ongoing initiative, named ‘ART2ART – DEAR EVAN HANSEN,’ has brought hundreds of NYC public high school students to see the Tony & Grammy Award-winning musical. 

Before attending Dear Evan Hansen, students participate in a workshop held by representatives from the cast and creative team of Dear Evan Hansen, during which they explore the relevant and very real themes within the show. The students use this time to prepare for not only the viewing of the show but also for the creative process of making art. Following the performance, each student expresses his/her response to the show by creating an original work of visual art.  Upon completion, the students join the Dear Evan Hansencompany for a celebration at Sardi’s, where their art is on display for the occasion. The works are also included in a curated online gallery (http://art2art.dearevanhansen.com/), and select pieces are displayed throughout Dear Evan Hansen’s Broadway home, the Music Box Theatre. Students throughout New York City are eligible to apply to participate in ART2ART.  From its applicant pool, fifty students will be chosen to participate in each session. Tyler Glenn (lead singer of the multi-platinum rock band, Neon Trees) will take over the role of “Charlie Price” in the TonyAward®-winning musical Kinky Boots at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre (302 West 45^th Street) beginning on Sunday, May 6.  Glenn, whose Neon Trees song - “Everybody Talks” was a Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, will play a limited run through Sunday, July 15.  Glenn takes over for David Cook who is playing “Charlie Price” through Saturday, May 5.

The producers also announced today that Carrie St. Louis (Wicked, Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical Experience) will take over the role of “Lauren” beginning on Friday May 4.   She is set to replace Kirstin Maldonado, who will play her final performance on Thursday May 3.

Lastly, the producers announced that J. Harrison Ghee will return to the role of “Lola” onMay 1. He takes over the role again after current star Wayne Brady plays his final performance on Friday, April 26.

Led by Sadam, the youngest member of the trailblazing band Tinariwen, Imarhan is one of the best emerging Tuareg bands in Algeria. Reflecting both the members’ cultural and generational background, the band’s dry guitar riffs, pop melodies, and pan-African rhythms draw on traditional Tuareg music, African ballads, and the modern pop and rock music they heard growing up. The band’s “ear-opening” debut album (Guardian, U.K.) set out to dismantle preconceived notions about Tuareg music. Butoh Master Yumiko Yoshioka performs 100 Light Years of Solitude, the second part of her trilogy 100 Flowers. The work is inspired by Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude and explores a state of solitude through Butoh. Yumiko Yoshioka is a Japanese Butoh dancer and choreographer from Japan/ Germany. She is a former member of Ariadone, the first female Butoh company, which was founded by Ko Murobushi and Carlotta Ikeda in 1974. 

In 100 Light Years of Solitude, Yumiko dances the life of a unique creature, born on a planet 100 light years away from ours. Imagining that this creature is the only one of its species on that planet, it enjoys unfolding its life until it realizes its destiny: to exist in solitude.

The Drama League recently announced the 2018 Drama League Awards Nominees for Outstanding Production of a Play, Outstanding Revival of a Play, Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Revival of a Musical, and the much-coveted Distinguished Performance Award.  The nominations were announced this morning by Tony^® Award winners Harriet Harris, Julie White and Tony^® Award nominee Christopher Sieber at the official announcement event at Sardi’s Restaurant, which was streamed live online at BroadwayWorld.com.

The nominations announcement begins the month of celebrations leading up to the 84th Annual Drama League Awards, which will be held at the Marriott Marquis Times Square (1535 Broadway) on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 11:30am.  Tickets and tables to the star-studded luncheon are available for purchase at www.dramaleague.org or by calling The Drama League at 212.244.9494; VIP tickets include access to the nominees’ reception.  The event is sponsored by MAC Cosmetics, Official Make-up Partner of The Drama League. Pan Asian Repertory Theatre (Tisa Chang, Founding Artistic Producing Director), continuing its 41^st milestone season on themes of social justice and historic amnesia, presents the world premiere of the new play Daybreak by Joyce van Dyke (A Girl’s War).  Performances BEGIN TOMORROW, April 21, 2018 for a limited engagement through Sunday, May 13, 2018 at The Beckett Theatre at Theatre Row (410 West 42^nd Street).

Daybreak is a lyrical story of two Armenian women friends, survivors from 1915, who are transported with their families into the 21^st century.  Set in three-time periods, the play is inspired by the true stories of Victoria and Varter, survivors driven from their homeland of Armenia, and using memory, dreams, and music, carries the story of these women through three generations to celebrate love, beauty and the endurance of the human spirit.

Davbreak will play the following performance schedule: Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday & Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Amas Musical Theatre’s (Donna Trinkoff, Artistic Producer) Rosetta LeNoire Musical Theatre Academy will present Jesus Christ Superstar, a Rock Opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice.  The story is loosely based on the Gospels' accounts of the last week of Jesus's life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion. 

Directed by Christopher Scott, with choreography by Monica Johnson and musical direction by Evan Alparone, the production will feature 17 members of “The Teen Academy.” Performances will begin on Friday, May 6, 2018 (and continue through May 13) at The Hudson Guild Theatre (441 West 26^th Street – between 9^th & 10^th Aves). The Rosetta LeNoire Musical Theatre Academy (formerly the “Eubie Blake Youth Theatre”), named after the famed actress Rosetta LeNoire, has been in continuous operation since the 1970s. Students from all over the Metropolitan area receive training in the performing arts from established theatre professionals. Classes include acting technique, dance and movement, and music, including theory, training and vocal technique.
