I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Still More Theater Saturday - The Last Bimbo of the Apocalypse

We received complimentary tickets to The Last Bimbo of the Apocalypse for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: The Last Bimbo of the Apocalypse

Where: The Pershing Square Signature Center
             480 W. 42nd St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 13 and Up

When: Through June 1, 2025

In 2006, a New York Post article labeled a picture of Lindsay Lohan, Brittany Spears, and Paris Hilton as "The Three Bimbos of the Apocalypse." This completely original musical imagines that there was a fourth girl in that photo, and a lonely, intrepid internet influencer, who fashions herself as something of a detective, decides to track her down and find out what happened. The results of her search say a lot about the culture of celebrity, the minuscule attention spans of the American public, and more. However, ultimately, this is a story about people learning to connect not just through their screens but in the real world.

The show has a modern sensibility, not just because it revolves around characters who are basically glued to their screens.  Everything about it: the plot, the characters, and even the songs are more likely to appeal to a younger but not too young audience, particularly Generation Z.

The songs are fun within the show, but not so memorable outside of it. The catchiest song is the lively and energetic semi-title number "The Last Bimbo", which is repeated several times throughout the show. The other most indelible song is "I Literally Die." However, the latter is more noteworthy for the delightfully delicious scene-stealing antics of the incredible Natalie Walker than for the actual song. In addition to Walker, the other major standout is Milly Shapiro. She is quite relatable as the lonely girl who has retreated behind her internet identity after putting herself out there and being bullied.

The show can be quite loud at times. It also contains simulated violence and mentions suicide. Thus, anyone with an issue with these things may want to avoid it. However, if that is not you and you are a fan of pop culture or true crime, you may particularly enjoy it.

And that's our view. For more about The Last Bimbo of the Apocalypse or to purchase tickets, visit thenewgroup.org/events/the-last-bimbo-of-the-apocalypse-2025-05-23-700-pm.

Theater Thursday - Parrots at the Pagoda

We received complimentary tickets to Parrots at the Pagoda for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Parrots at the Pagoda

Where: Puerto Rican Traveling Theater
             304 W. 47th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 16 and Up

When: Through May 25, 2025

Parrots at the Pagoda is the story of real-life drag artist, singer, composer, and impresario, Johnny Rodriguez. The show takes place as Johnny looks back on his life while a gaggle of drag queens take turns enacting the role of Johnny and others in his life. This play with music is loaded with the songs of its subject, along with one Cab Calloway song. The latter is a highlight of the show as the audience is encouraged to sing along.

The show is presented bilingually. Most of the dialogue is in English, and the songs are in Spanish. Monitors in the theater visually translate so even those not fluent in both languages can easily follow along. The songs wouldn't work in English anyway. The words don't sound as meaningful or pretty when translated.

The show is vibrant, lively, and colorful thanks to the spirited performances of its cast and the gorgeous costumes, especially the incredible headdresses of the drag queens. It provides a fascinating look at a performer many people are probably unfamiliar with. Whether you are or not, you can still enjoy the story of this trailblazing artist.

And that's our view. For more about Parrots at the Pagoda or to purchase tickets, visit pregonesprtt.org/2024/09/04/parrots-at-the-pagoda-2025.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Robert Motherwell at Home and in the Studio

What: Robert Motherwell at Home and in the Studio

Where: New York Public Library
             Stephen A. Schwartzman Building
             476 5th Ave.
             New York, NY

When: Through August 2, 2025

Robert Motherwell was an abstract expressionist, painter, and printmaker. He was part of the New York School, an informal group of artists from various disciplines active in the 1950s and 1960s. Recently, the New York Public Library was gifted with a collection of his work and several books from his library. Some of these are currently on display in the exhibit Robert Motherwell at Home and in the Studio, which is now open at the Stephen A. Schwartzman branch of the library.

Motherwell was an avid reader. Many of the books in his collection, including at least some of those in the exhibit, contain his handwritten annotations. His love for reading was also reflected in his work. He often incorporated literary references in his art.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: The Ascent & Whispers of Dead Girls; Movie: Conspircy of Fear

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any books, products, and/or any other visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: The Ascent & Whispers of Dead Girls

Today, we are talking about The Ascent by Allison Buccola. This book has an intriguing premise. It is purportedly the story of a woman, Ophelia, who, at 12 years old was the only one left when a cult of people mysteriously disappeared. However, the central mystery has little to do with that. It is also rather cliché. The major plot twists are not new and exciting, but something that's been done a million times before.

The whole cult aspect seems like an underutilized element of the plot. Although it's easy to feel sympathetic towards Ophelia, much of what she experiences doesn't seem specific to having grown up in a cult and could have come from numerous sources of trauma that have previously been explored in other books. Thus, the plot doesn't feel as fresh and new as you might think it would. Much of what Ophelia experiences seems to be due to her sense of abandonment, which is a common feeling that many people experience without having to specifically have grown up in a cult to do so.

There's not a lot of romance in this book either. From the beginning, Ophelia's husband is a controlling jerk, and even though she keeps things from him, that is part of her trauma response and not an excuse for him to be so controlling. He never really tries to understand what she is dealing with and help her; he just wants her to get therapy and get over it. He is so unlikable that you never really root for the relationship.

The main conclusion of the story is extremely clichéd and not at all interesting. The conclusion to the mystery of the cult is thrown in like an afterthought in the last few pages. Although it makes sense within the story, it is not exciting either. It would be much more interesting to read about a real cult than this one. Thus, if you're in it for that, don't be surprised if you end up disappointed.

Today, we are talking about Whispers of Dead Girls by Marlee Bush. Years after the death of Ren's sister, Ren returns to teach in her hometown, determined to keep what happened to her sister from happening again. However, how her sister died is neither the central mystery nor that interesting. In fact, the major plot twist involving her sister is already clear if you read the book's description. Her sister is also part of the story as a ghost, but even that is not exciting, as it seems. It is merely a plot device for her to be the conscience that a best friend would provide to Ren, since Ren doesn't seem to have any friends.

The story is more about what happened before her sister died, although it is only indirectly related to her death. It is about predatory teachers and Ren's desire to protect young girls from relationships with them, particularly one young girl, Olivia. There is also a mystery that involves the death of a student and the disappearance of another, which may also be related to an improper relationship between a teacher and a student. It all connects in surprising ways that actually make the story less likable.

The main character, Ren, is not likable either. She engages in unforgivable actions that render her extremely hard to root for. Olivia also turns out to be not what she seems, and is also not likable or worth rooting for. Some of the least likely characters turn out to be the most sympathetic ones. Thus, the book is a reminder not to jump to conclusions about people. However, arriving at this lesson isn't a worthwhile reason to read the book, especially when it is likely to leave you feeling unsatisfied, sad, and maybe even a bit traumatized. If you like a book that leaves you feeling this way, you might enjoy it.

Movies: Conspiracy of Fear

Today, we are talking about the film Conspiracy of Fear. In a dystopian world where a virus that turns people into paranoid hybrids runs rampant, one man is trying to force everyone into taking a pill that is guaranteed to prevent that, but may also be deadly for some people. Despite the obvious differences between real life and the movie, it still seems too close to reality in a harmful way. Any film that promotes fear of preventative medication and raises conspiracy theories regarding their use does not seem like a good thing even if these things are raised within a fictional story.

The movie is not that interesting anyway. It is quite slow-moving and mostly unexciting. Plus, you never feel like you get to know the characters that much.  Even for lovers of violent action films, there is not much to like in this film since there is not as much violence as you might think. It's mostly just boring.

And that's our view. The Ascent is publishing today. Whispers of Dead Girls will publish next Tuesday, May 27. Conspiracy of Fear is available now digitally for purchase or rental.

Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

More Theater Monday - Gertrude Lawrence: A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening

We received complimentary tickets to Gertrude Lawrence: A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Gertrude Lawrence: A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening

Where: 59E59 Theaters
             59 E. 59 St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 12 and Up

When: Through May 25, 2025

Lucy Stevens quite masterfully slips into the skin of the legendary Gertrude Lawrence to tell the actor's story in her own words. Punctuated by songs covering the range of her career, this one-woman play with music never lags for a minute. Stevens has more than the acting chops to pull off the role; her vocal skills are more than up to the task as well. Her voice is quite lovely. It's a joy to hear her sing such well-known songs associated with Lawrence as "On the Sunny Side of the Street", "The Saga of Jenny", "Shall We Dance?", and more, along with many less well-known songs associated with the performer.

You don't have to be familiar with Gertrude Lawrence or have seen her work to enjoy this show. How closely she does or doesn't capture the celebrated performer doesn't really matter. This is a performance that stands on its own merits.

Mozambique: Movement! Magic! Manifestation! will showcase traditional Mozambican dance forms that reflect the country’s history, spirituality, and resilience. Tufu is a rhythmic dance often performed by women, featuring fluid movements and percussive clapping that emphasize grace and unity. Xigubo, a warrior’s dance, is deeply rooted in Mozambique’s legacy of resistance, and historically performed by fighters preparing for battle. Ngalanga is a celebratory dance traditionally showcased at festivals and gatherings, embodying joy and communal spirit.

The program also includes Mapiko and Nhau, dances that highlight Mozambique’s diverse traditions—from the dramatic storytelling of masked performances to the powerful rhythms of drumming and movement. Across generations, these dances have served as more than performance; they are an embodiment of history, identity, and cultural preservation.

5) The Leg

The Leg is an ensemble-based physical theatre performance that uses Butoh, Bouffon and Puppetry to explore the links between spirituality, pain, pleasure and politics. Drawing from the writings of Foucault and Preciado, this devised hybrid movement piece combines laughter and danger to explore the idea that we are all political fiction alive.

The Leg will feature various kinds of inflatables including inflatable costumes and large inflatable set pieces propelled by air. The fabric used for the costumes is a nylon with a certain degree of porosity which needs to be constantly inflated. This fabric is lightweight and flowy, which gives the actors the ability to move freely and the inflated nylon amplifies the actors movements. Other inflatables are made with heavier tapestry fabric mixed with lighter nylon fabric. These are much more sturdy and have a creature-like quality. Actors interact with these creatures and they function as characters in themselves. Sometimes the human character and the creature characters merge or transform into a hybrid character. The large inflatables are maneuvered and puppeteered by the actors, eliminating the distinction between character and surrounding or actor and set.

17) CELEBRATING THE WORK OF

COMMUNITY-BASED DOULAS

New “Courage in Care” art exhibit, created by doulas and

partners, narrates their impact on birth equity

and health justice

Newark ArtSpace

Vermella Broad Street

55 Broad Street, Newark

Exhibit Now - July 15

A statewide coalition of doulas, community leaders, healthcare providers, artists, and advocates has created The Courage in Care: Community Doulas and the Joyful Revolution of Birth, a first-of-its-kind immersive exhibit that uses photojournalism, audio storytelling, and multisensory environments to celebrate the work of New Jersey’s community doulas.

While New Jersey has made progress toward becoming the safest and most equitable state in which to have and raise a baby, not all communities have benefited equally. Black women are nearly seven times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women, and Black infants are more than three times as likely to die before their first birthday.

Community doulas—trusted, culturally rooted birth workers—help reduce these inequities in health outcomes for babies and their families by providing essential physical, emotional, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum months. Their presence leads to healthier parents and babies, especially in communities historically impacted by systemic inequities.

The exhibit will be on display through July 15 at Newark ArtSpace at Vermella Broad Street, 355 Broad Street, Newark. The exhibit formally opened on April 29 with a reception, poetry reading, and panel discussion.

The Courage in Care is more than an exhibit—it’s a love letter to the doulas, birthing parents, and communities reshaping what it means to give and receive dignified, culturally grounded care.

18) 92NY Harkness Dance Center Presents

Limón Dance Company

Two Ecstatic Themes – Doris Humphrey

La Malinche – José Limón

The Moor’s Pavane – José Limón

Join – Aszure Barton (World Premiere)

In Person

Wednesday, May 21, 7 pm

Thursday, May 22, 7 pm

The 92nd Street Y, New York’s 2024/25 Harkness Dance Center 90th anniversary season closes with the Limón Dance Company, celebrating its 79th anniversary. Company founder José Limón and 92NY’s modern dance history dates back to the 1930s; Limón performed here with the iconic Doris Humphrey, among others. The program includes generation-defining choreography by both Limón and Humphrey, and a striking world premiere by Aszure Barton. Performances are on May 21 and 22 at 7 pm and tickets are available here.

The evening begins with Doris Humphrey’s Two Ecstatic Themes, a solo that encapsulates one of the earliest traceable moments of modern dance and the origins of fall and recovery – an inherent principle in contemporary dance as we know it today.

La Malinche was the José Limón Dance Company’s inaugural work. Examining two characters, Conquistador (Hernán Cortés) and El Indio that Limón had developed in previous choreographic explorations, La Malinche is an elemental masterpiece in his body of work that underscores his connection to his birthplace and reveals the promise of a budding choreographer. This work acts as a sketch of character development, musicality, and choreographic craft, laying the foundation for his most well-known work, The Moor’s Pavane, created just two years later.

Choreography: José Limón (1947)

Music: Norman Lloyd

The Moor’s Pavane, which premiered at 92NY in 1949, is an intimate work that begins with an introduction to the players, this time expanded to be a quartet. Limón’s movement vocabulary is more expressive and expansive, along with his understanding of how to manipulate space with complex partnering, and nuanced story telling. The Moor’s Pavane is one of Limón’s most celebrated works and has been performed by the greats from Julie Kent to Rudolf Nureyev.

Choreography: José Limón (1949)

Music: Henry Purcell (arranged by Simon Sadoff)

New York City premiere November 16, 1949 at the 92nd Street Y by the José Limón Dance Company. La Malinche and Doris Humphrey’s Invention were also on the program.

Join completes the curatorial arc, bringing the audience to the 21st century, and looking to the future of dance while harvesting the past for inspiration. World renowned choreographer Aszure Barton, and Grammy-nominated composer Ambrose Akinmusire, created a profound new work inspired by José Limón's vivid, poetic description of Doris Humphrey’s lost work Orestes. In Limón’s An Unfinished Memoir, he recalls his mentor’s process and staging with adoration and respect, claiming it “as one of her greatest works”. Unfortunately, the work’s magnitude, with an orchestral score – The Eumenides by Darius Milhaud – made it impossible to produce so it never premiered.

A list of artists releasing LPs on Fat Beats over the past three decades reads like a Mount Rushmore of indie rap, including Atmosphere, Black Milk, ILL BILL, Organized Konfusion, Talib Kweli, Madlib and Kool Keith to name only a few. Now headquartered on the west coast, Fat Beats remains a crucial part of NYC Hip-Hop history. In celebration of Fat Beats' 30th Anniversary, Lincoln Center guest curator and the voice and personality of Spotify’s AI DJ, Xavier “X” Jernigan, introduces the premiere of the new Fat Beats documentary film, accompanied by an opening set from a Fat Beats DJ and followed by a talk back panel, from the names that made the scene come to life.

29) Three More Critically Endangered Galapagos Tortoises Hatch at Philadelphia Zoo, Plus New Clutch of Eggs Continues to Develop

The hatchlings, incubated as males, are the remaining eggs from the same clutch of eggs in 2024 that produced four females earlier this year

Philadelphia Zoo is excited to share that three more critically endangered Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises have hatched at the Zoo. These hatchlings are from the same clutch of eggs that produced four female tortoises earlier in 2025. The hatchlings’ parents, female Mommy and male Abrazzo, are the Zoo’s two oldest residents, each estimated to be around 100 years old. Additionally, Mommy is considered one of the most genetically valuable Galapagos tortoises in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). She is also the oldest first-time mom of her species. The male hatchlings, currently behind-the-scenes inside the Reptile and Amphibian House, are eating and growing appropriately. The first male egg pipped (began hatching) on April 14 with the two others hatching in the following weeks. The male hatchlings do not have names at this time. The Zoo recently asked the public to weigh in and help choose names for the four female hatchlings, who are now named for the Golden Girls: Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia. In order to provide all the hatchlings with the best care possible, both the females and males will be spending time in their public habitat and their habitat behind-the-scenes in the Reptile and Amphibian House.
