Tips for Tuesday - Books: Never Been Shipped, What Kind of Paradise, & That Kind of Girl; Movie: Prime Minister

Books: Never Been Shipped, What Kind of Paradise, & That Kind of Girl
Never Been Shipped by Alicia Thompson was a decent book that simply didn't stand out to me.
The main characters, Micah and John, were pretty well-developed, but I didn't love either of them. The romance between the two of them was cute, but it began so abruptly. They were childhood friends who hadn't spoken in more than a decade. Then all of a sudden, upon seeing each other again, they were both completely obsessed with each other in a romantic way, even though they had only ever been friends. John had clearly been interested in Micah back when they were younger, too so it made sense that his attraction to her was present again. However, Micah seemed to have viewed John as a friend in the old days, so it was jarring to see her lusting after him so strongly. Despite that, I did enjoy them as a couple. I really appreciated the fact that they continued to value their friendship even after they started hooking up. I also liked that there was no major third-act conflict. Micah and John handled their feelings and approached their relationship maturely as adults with little to no miscommunication that is so often present in romances.
Some aspects of the plot felt underutilized, such as John's relationship with his father. It was mentioned a few times but never in depth, and it felt strange that the author introduced such a heavy topic only for it to barely impact the story. I also would've liked to learn more about Micah's relationship with her ex, Rider. He was an awful person who clearly caused Micah a lot of pain, and yet once again, it felt like we only scratched the surface.
The pacing wasn't bad, although my attention faded somewhat towards the end, and the writing was solid. There was also some nice LGBTQ+ representation. I can see why people might have a great time with this, and I recommend that anyone who thinks it sounds interesting give it a try. Personally, though, I enjoyed it for the most part, but I just didn't connect to it.
This gripping novel centers on an extreme father/daughter relationship. Accordingly, if you have issues with psychological manipulation or unsettling family dynamics, you may find it triggering. It also examines other extremely topical issues, including the perhaps too rapid march of technology and the extremism that causes some to try to force their views on others by any means necessary without regard for consequences. These things may also be triggering for some people. However, if you can get past all that, it is a well-written, fast-paced, exciting, and quite timely book.

A fearless, funny, and deeply heartfelt reimagining of Grease, this “rez-ed up” remix swaps 1950s Greasers and Pink Ladies for a cast that proudly spotlights Indigenous language, music, and moves. They’re storytellers, comedians, and cultural ambassadors serving up traditional dance with a twist, and original songs that blend powwow rhythms with Broadway flair.

Franz Kafka is still the presiding genius of experimental storytelling.
A hundred years on from his death at the age of just 40, Kafka remains the voice of the outsider and the disempowered – struggling between the agony of solitude and the pains of intimacy, isolated in the big city and in the world, whilst never forgetting how absurd and hilarious life can be.

Theatre Marquees to Dim
on Tuesday, June 10 at 6:45PM ET
The newly formed Broadway In Memoriam Committee, composed of theatre owners in consultation with industry service organizations, has confirmed the inaugural June 10th marquee dimming will honor artists and industry members Marshall Brickman, Richard Chamberlain, William Finn, Athol Fugard, Helen Gallagher, Gene Hackman, Quincy Jones, Linda Lavin, Merle Louise, Ken Page, Joan Plowright, Tony Roberts, Charles Strouse and Lynne Taylor-Corbett. All theatre marquees will dim simultaneously on Tuesday, June 10 at 6:45PM ET in their honor.
Earlier this year, the Broadway in Memoriam Committee announced the establishment of “Broadway in Memoriam,” a quarterly tradition dedicated to honoring the remarkable individuals who have left an indelible mark on Broadway.
Taking place four times a year on the second Tuesday in September, December, March and June, this solemn and celebratory event will recognize multiple honorees, ensuring that the contributions of Broadway’s most influential artists, creators and industry professionals are remembered and revered.
The marquees of all 41 Broadway theatres will be dimmed simultaneously, offering a moment of reflection and gratitude for the legacies of those who have shaped the theatrical world.
Creative professionals who have worked on Broadway and career professionals dedicated to the Broadway industry may be submitted for consideration by completing the online form at BroadwayInMemoriam.org. The submission form requires the following information: name of the individual to be honored, year of birth and year of passing, a description of their work on Broadway and a digital photo. The next application deadline is August 12, 2025.
Exceptions may arise where the Committee chooses to honor a singular individual who has made a profoundly significant and lasting impact on Broadway. These individual memorials will be announced and scheduled separately from the quarterly marquee dimmings.
A one-night-only reunion concert of The Connector to benefit the Committee to Protect Journalists will be held on Monday June 16, 2025 at 7:30pm at Webster Hall (125 E 11th St, New York, NY 10003). The concert will feature original cast members from the 2024 World Premiere production, including Scott Bakula, Ben Levi Ross, and Hannah Cruz; as well as the original orchestra, led by Jason Robert Brown on piano.
The Committee to Protect Journalists was founded over 40 years ago as a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with the mission of defending journalists who report the news despite facing tremendous risks. Over the years, their advocacy has helped win dozens of positive legal reforms, convictions in scores of journalist murders, and the release of hundreds of jailed journalists. CPJ has also provided direct assistance to thousands of journalists all over the world. Today, they are recognized as a leader in the global fight to protect press freedom.

About the Schooner Pioneer
Pioneer was built in Pennsylvania in 1885 to carry sand and heavy cargoes along the Delaware River. Unlike almost all American cargo sloops and schooners that were made of wood, Pioneer was constructed with a wrought iron hull because she was built in what was then the nation’s center for iron shipbuilding. Today, she is the sole American merchant sailing vessel with an iron hull. Through offering sails aboard Pioneer, the Seaport Museum provides an exceptional experience to the public, catering to inquisitive students, seasoned New Yorkers, and eager visitors alike. By offering unique opportunity to venture out onto the water, this remarkable vessel grants guests a new vantage point to see the city allowing guests to forge a deeper connection with New York’s maritime past and present, illustrating exactly “Where New York Begins.” seaportmuseum.org/about-

45) BARN CABARET SERIES EVENT
THREE MEN AND A BABY GRAND
Full of hijinks, hilarity and three-part-harmony, the show features fresh takes on familiar favorites, outrageous parody, and original songs.
The special concert event is part of
Bucks County Playhouse’s ongoing Cabaret Series
Richard Rodgers Award winner Brandon James Gwinn joins Dylan Hartwell and Greg Sullivan for a special performance of their hilarious and irreverent cabaret show, “Three Men and a Baby Grand,” on Sunday, June 15, at 7 p.m. at Bucks County Playhouse’s Playhouse Barn.
The event is part of the Playhouse’s new Cabaret Series, held in the intimate, historic Playhouse Barn just across the courtyard from the main theater.
The three-man cabaret, with Gwinn on the piano and real-life husbands Hartwell and Sullivan on vocals, premiered in New York last year to rave reviews. Billed as “a gay night of music and comedy,” the show features fresh takes on familiar favorites, outrageous parody and original songs — all delivered with high-energy hijinks, clever humor and three-part harmony.
Tickets are $60, with an additional $25 per person drink minimum. Doors open one hour before showtime, and seating is extremely limited. The performance is recommended for mature audiences.
Tickets are available at BucksCountyPlayhouse.org or by calling the box office at 215-862-2121.
