I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Theater Thursday - Alibi: An Agatha Christie Story

We received complimentary tickets to Alibi: An Agatha Christie Mystery for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Alibi: An Agatha Christie Mystery

Where: Bristol Riverside Theatre
              120 Radicliffe St.
              Bristol, PA

Who: Recommended for Ages 13 and Up

When: Through June 15, 2025

Alibi: An Agatha Christie Story is based on the acclaimed mystery author's book, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. In fact, the show has appeared in some locations under that name, but allegedly it is the same show. The book has one of the most interesting and unique plot twists of all of Christie's book making it one of her most intriguing novels. For this reason, the show may even be more exciting for those who are not actually familiar with the story than for those who are.

This does not mean that you can't enjoy the show if you have read the book. It is still fun to see the characters come to life, and for the most part the actors do a good job doing so. Two of the performers particularly stand out. The first is Benjamine Lloyd in the role of Hercule Poirot, who does an excellent job of embodying the brilliant detectective with just the right amount of his famous pomposity. The other stand out is Jackie Shram. She plays a couple of roles in the show, but especially shines in the role of Caroline where she hams it up the perfect amount without overdoing it in the role of gossip addicted Caroline. Whether you are fan of mysteries in general or Agatha Christie in particular, you should definitely enjoy this pleasantly diverting show.

And that's our view. For more about Alibi: An Agatha Christie Story, visit brtstage.org/shows/alibi-agatha-christie

Tune in Saturday for Still More Theater Saturday.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Site of the Farley Post Office

What:
Site of the Farley Post Office
           (currently the Moynihan Train Hall)

Where: 350 W. 33rd St.
             New York, NY

Who: All ages

The current site of the Moynihan Train Hall across from Penn Station was formerly the Farley Post Office, New York's largest post office, and at the time of its completion possibly the largest in the world. The location is approximately 1.4 million square miles and covers 2 city blocks. It was fully operational as a 24-hour post office from 1914 through 2009. At one time, there was even a small post office museum within the building.

Currently, although there may still be some postal activity, the majority of the building has been repurposed into the Moynihan Train Hall. The Farley Post Office is part of the 34th District section of the Know New York campaign and you can learn more about it as well as about post office history in general through the available signage when you visit the location.

And that's our view.

Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Never Been Shipped, What Kind of Paradise, & That Kind of Girl; Movie: Prime Minister

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any books, products, and/or any other visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: Never Been Shipped, What Kind of Paradise, & That Kind of Girl

Never Been Shipped by Alicia Thompson was a decent book that simply didn't stand out to me.

The main characters, Micah and John, were pretty well-developed, but I didn't love either of them. The romance between the two of them was cute, but it began so abruptly. They were childhood friends who hadn't spoken in more than a decade. Then all of a sudden, upon seeing each other again, they were both completely obsessed with each other in a romantic way, even though they had only ever been friends. John had clearly been interested in Micah back when they were younger, too so it made sense that his attraction to her was present again. However, Micah seemed to have viewed John as a friend in the old days, so it was jarring to see her lusting after him so strongly. Despite that, I did enjoy them as a couple. I really appreciated the fact that they continued to value their friendship even after they started hooking up. I also liked that there was no major third-act conflict. Micah and John handled their feelings and approached their relationship maturely as adults with little to no miscommunication that is so often present in romances.

Some aspects of the plot felt underutilized, such as John's relationship with his father. It was mentioned a few times but never in depth, and it felt strange that the author introduced such a heavy topic only for it to barely impact the story. I also would've liked to learn more about Micah's relationship with her ex, Rider. He was an awful person who clearly caused Micah a lot of pain, and yet once again, it felt like we only scratched the surface.

The pacing wasn't bad, although my attention faded somewhat towards the end, and the writing was solid. There was also some nice LGBTQ+ representation. I can see why people might have a great time with this, and I recommend that anyone who thinks it sounds interesting give it a try. Personally, though, I enjoyed it for the most part, but I just didn't connect to it.

Mom - Today, I recommend What Kind of Paradise by Janelle Brown. Jane has little memory of her life before she and her father began living off the grid in Montana with little contact with the outside world. However, as Jane grows older, she learns that her father may not have been completely truthful with her about their past, and she begins to push back on the restrictions she has always lived under. When her blind devotion to her father leads to her involvement in a crime, she flees to San Francisco to find out more about the mother she never knew.

This gripping novel centers on an extreme father/daughter relationship. Accordingly, if you have issues with psychological manipulation or unsettling family dynamics, you may find it triggering. It also examines other extremely topical issues, including the perhaps too rapid march of technology and the extremism that causes some to try to force their views on others by any means necessary without regard for consequences. These things may also be triggering for some people. However, if you can get past all that, it is a well-written, fast-paced, exciting, and quite timely book.

Mom again -Today, I also recommend That Kind of Girl by Natalie C. Anderson. This book, about a teenage sleuth who finds things for her wealthier classmates and suddenly ends up embroiled in the mystery of a classmate's death, is extremely reminiscent of Veronica Mars. Roxie, the main character of the novel, also has the feisty personality of Ms. Mars minus the snark.  Plus, her touching relationship with the uncle who took her in is a reminder of Veronica and her father's relationship. That is where the similarities end, however. The gist of the plot is completely original. If you enjoy a book where seemingly disparate stories link up in surprising ways or one that involves intriguing puzzles needing to be solved, you should enjoy this one.

Movie: Prime Minister

Today, we highly recommend the film, Prime Minister. Anyone who needs a reminder that there are still people who go into politics for the right reasons and don't lose sight of what is really important throughout their entire political career will want to see this film. Jacinda Ardern, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, is not only an inspiration but the perfect example of the kind of caring, committed leader we all should want and would be lucky to have.

And that's our view.  Never Been Shipped and What Kind of Paradise are available now. That Kind of Girl will be published on June 24. Prime Minister will be in theaters this Friday, June 13.

More Theater Monday - Boop! The Musical

What: Boop! The Musical

Where: Broadhurst Theatre
             235 W. 44th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 8 and Up

Jasmine Amy Rogers is an effervescent delight as the squeaky-voiced heroine come to life in this charming new musical. Although the songs may not be that memorable, they're definitely fun. A few notable exceptions are "Where I Wanna Be", the joyous first act closer and "Where Is Betty?" the second act opener, both of which are highlights of the show. However, the latter is more memorable for its unique costumes and choreography than the song itself. Rarely, if ever, have the two been so perfectly aligned. The dancing, in general, is one of the best parts of the show, and if you are a fan of tap dancing, you will particularly enjoy it. Even if some parts of the story don't entirely make sense, the show is just bubbly and joyful and can be enjoyed by almost anyone.

A) Beginning Performances

In New New York

1) At the Barricades

At the Barricades is a source-based history play about the international troops fighting in the Spanish Civil War. The drama follows six different characters from the United States, Spain and Scotland, brought together, despite their varied backgrounds, by a shared desire to fight against Franco’s fascist coup. We join them on the outskirts of Madrid in January 1937 and witness, over the course of a year, how their political loyalties, personal relationships and understanding of themselves are strengthened, challenged and irrevocably changed by the tragedy and the carnage around them.

Performed by an international cast of actors from Spain, Italy, Scotland, and the United States, this prescient new play asks the question: how far would you go to protect the freedoms of others?

Bear Grease isn’t just a musical — it’s a full-blown Indigenous celebration wrapped in leather jackets, high-octane humor, and powwow beats. A fearless, funny, and deeply heartfelt reimagining of Grease, this “rez-ed up” remix swaps 1950s Greasers and Pink Ladies for a cast that proudly spotlights Indigenous language, music, and moves. It’s a cultural joyride that’s as hilarious as it is healing. From the first drumbeat to the final bow, Bear Grease radiates with energy. The cast doesn’t just perform — they represent. They’re storytellers, comedians, and cultural ambassadors serving up traditional dance with a twist, and original songs that blend powwow rhythms with Broadway flair.

But when the Devil comes to town, will he give up his soul for a sole? And what will he do about his mother, who is a promiscuous witch? No really, an actual witch. This loosely adapted take on Nikolai Gogol’s story sets the show in a meta-theatrical universe which combines a Ukrainian 19th-century absurdist tone and a modern sensibility, plus a lotta slapstick

A successful writer is in for a ride when he hires a fiery new publicist who exceeds his so-called (s)expertise. When their professional research becomes personal, their preconceived notions are put to the test - maybe sex doesn’t have to be the most intimate form of connection.

Letter

On the way from Tokyo to Los Angeles, he begins to write a letter. About his work as a schoolteacher, his neon-lit nights in the porn industry, and the mother he will never see again.

I Should Be Obliterated

As an asteroid hurtles toward New York, the city's loneliest souls contemplate their existence.

Twenty-Six Minutes

Twenty-Six Minutes is a story of two strangers, both with bouquets of flowers, awaiting a delayed train. The piece is intended to highlight the nature of how objects take us to different places, but, at the same time, may bring us together.

Under St. Marks (94 St. Marks Pl.)

Femme In Yellow Tombola: mystical queer italian bingo
Written and Performed by Summer Minerva - Brooklyn, NY
As a queer and trans Italian American, Summer Minerva retraced her queerness and her Italianness back to her grandmother’s southern Italian land, where she discovered the presence of a 3rd gender figure known as a femminiello, a revered figure in Neapolitan folk culture with its origins in pre-Christian goddess worship. In this multi-medium performance, Summer embodies a femminiello, in one of their most important societal roles: mystical caller of Italian bingo. With each number that the femminiello calls at random, a different theatrical experience ensues. A folk dance? A heartwarming story? A competition for best spinster? There may even be a wedding… Femme In Yellow comes on the heels of Summer's sold out NYC Premiere of her award-winning feature documentary Summer Within.

Beneath The Surface
Written by Bailey C Lewis - Brooklyn, NY
History Repeats. That's a phrase Everett Hart from The Force of the 19th precinct knows well. His boss has driven it home that history repeats, which includes some "rebellion" that needs to be squashed. He also knows well from his time in the reformatory as a child that it can and will be squashed. He was showing signs of "gender betrayal", better to nip it in the bud and be done with it. When Everett is sent to investigate a site suspected of illegal "indecent" activity, he discovers The Underground- a secret haven for the queer folks who refuse to suppress themselves. After befriending Monet, a genderless drag performer, and their partners, Everett is forced to confront the truth: you can't get rid of who people are, despite rewriting history books. Even more so, he may not have been "cured" of his "gender betrayal" after all.

Frigid Nighcap
Welcome to Anarchoqueeria—where laws are made to be glitter-bombed, and the only ruling principle is radical liberation. In this special Pride edition of FRIGID Nightcap, NYC’s weirdest late-night variety show unleashes a night of maximalist queer performance where anything can happen. Comedy, drag, burlesque, music, movement, poetry, performance art, things that defy classification...you never know what to expect at FRIGID Nightcap, but you can be sure you'll experience glamour and garbage...velvet and violence...lace and leather...protest chants and primal screams… This is not utopia. This is Anarchoqueeria: a dream of queer defiance, excess, and power. A fantasia where the absurd becomes sacred and the sacred gets a baseball bat to the face. Scared? You should be. Excited? Even better. Ready? Grab your cocktail, Molotov or otherwise. Let's get unruly.

Glitter Uprising: A Deliciously Disobedient Queer Revue
Written by Holli Hemlock - Brooklyn, CO
When the world tries to dim your shine, covering yourself in glitter becomes an act of revolution. Join us for a spectacularly subversive burlesque experience that redefines the art form through a distinctly queer lens. "Glitter Uprising" features a diverse cast of performers who shimmy, shake, and strip away conventions while celebrating the radical joy of queer bodies in all their forms. This is a joyful rebellion where every removal of clothing is an act of queer defiance, every sparkle a statement of resistance. Our performers will take you on a journey through euphoria and empowerment as they reclaim the stage with acts that are both tantalizing and transformative. From glittering pasties to powerful political statements, from sensual stripteases to radical reimaginings of gender performance, "Glitter Uprising" offers a deliciously disobedient night of entertainment that challenges expectations while celebrating the beauty of queer expression. In a world that constantly tries to make us palatable, we choose to be gloriously, unapologetically ourselves. Come witness the revolution—it will be sequined, it will be spectacular, and it will absolutely change the way you think about burlesque. Resistance has never looked so fabulous. Content note: Contains partial nudity, explicit celebration of queer and trans bodies, and absolutely zero apologies.

HOSTED BY

Colin Cosell

(THE VOICE OF THE METS)

MONDAY JUNE 16, 2025

AT THE LYNN F. ANGELSON THEATER

The 24 Hour Musicals will take place on Monday June 16, 2025 at 7pm at the Lynn F. Angelson Theatre (136 E 13th St, New York, NY). This intensive theatrical endeavor will see artists write, rehearse and perform four new musicals in just 24 hours.

The marathon process for The 24 Hour Musicals begins the night before the performance, when writers, composers, directors, choreographers, actors, musicians and production staff gather for a short orientation. Four writer and composer teams craft short musicals overnight (while actors and directors get some rest) and the next morning — after a furious printing and copying process — actors receive their scripts. Together with directors, choreographers and a live band, they begin rehearsal. Later that night, four brand new musicals take the stage in a one-night-only production!

30) THE AMERICAN THEATRE WING

ANOUNCES

THE GAVIN CREEL FELLOWSHIP

TO AWARD FIVE EMERGING THEATER ACTORS ANNUALLY
WITH A $25K GRANT, MENTORSHIPS, AND ACCESS

The American Theatre Wing (ATW), led by President and CEO Heather Hitchens, in partnership with Tony Award Winner Celia Keenan-Bolger (To Kill a Mockingbird, Spelling Bee), Tony Award Nominee Sara Bareilles (Waitress, Into the Woods), Catherine Brunell (Mean Girls, Les Misérables), and a collection of Gavin’s friends, are thrilled to launch The Gavin Creel Fellowship.  The annual fellowship program, named in honor of the beloved Tony Award-winning actor and activist Gavin Creel, who passed away in the fall of 2024, will bestow five young theater actors with:
  • A grant of $25,000
  • Personal mentorship from an industry professional
  • Curated networking events with Broadway leaders
  • Access to American Theatre Wing programs: Master Class, Working in the Theatre, The Playreaders Club, and more
  • Free tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway shows
  • Tony Awards attendance as seat fillers

Having received guidance and support as he transitioned from college to become a working actor, Gavin believed in paying it forward to the next generation of actors striving to get into the industry.  Deeply concerned about the economic and systemic challenges facing emerging actors, Gavin dreamed of a program to help them transition from college to career-and from anywhere in America to New York City.

Inaugural Marquee Dimming

Marquee Dimming Will Honor

Marshall Brickman, Richard Chamberlain, William Finn, Athol Fugard, Helen Gallagher, Gene Hackman, Quincy Jones, Linda Lavin, Merle Louise, Ken Page, Joan Plowright, Tony Roberts, Charles Strouse and Lynne Taylor-Corbett

Theatre Marquees to Dim

on Tuesday, June 10 at 6:45PM ET

The newly formed Broadway In Memoriam Committee, composed of theatre owners in consultation with industry service organizations, has confirmed the inaugural June 10th marquee dimming will honor artists and industry members Marshall Brickman, Richard Chamberlain, William Finn, Athol Fugard, Helen Gallagher, Gene Hackman, Quincy Jones, Linda Lavin, Merle Louise, Ken Page, Joan Plowright, Tony Roberts, Charles Strouse and Lynne Taylor-Corbett. All theatre marquees will dim simultaneously on Tuesday, June 10 at 6:45PM ET in their honor.

Earlier this year, the Broadway in Memoriam Committee announced the establishment of “Broadway in Memoriam,” a quarterly tradition dedicated to honoring the remarkable individuals who have left an indelible mark on Broadway.

Taking place four times a year on the second Tuesday in September, December, March and June, this solemn and celebratory event will recognize multiple honorees, ensuring that the contributions of Broadway’s most influential artists, creators and industry professionals are remembered and revered.

The marquees of all 41 Broadway theatres will be dimmed simultaneously, offering a moment of reflection and gratitude for the legacies of those who have shaped the theatrical world.

Creative professionals who have worked on Broadway and career professionals dedicated to the Broadway industry may be submitted for consideration by completing the online form at BroadwayInMemoriam.org. The submission form requires the following information: name of the individual to be honored, year of birth and year of passing, a description of their work on Broadway and a digital photo. The next application deadline is August 12, 2025.

Exceptions may arise where the Committee chooses to honor a singular individual who has made a profoundly significant and lasting impact on Broadway. These individual memorials will be announced and scheduled separately from the quarterly marquee dimmings.

For additional details, including the online form, please visit BroadwayInMemoriam.org. For questions or inquiries, please email cmt@BroadwayMarqueeInMemoriam.org.

About the Schooner Pioneer

Pioneer was built in Pennsylvania in 1885 to carry sand and heavy cargoes along the Delaware River. Unlike almost all American cargo sloops and schooners that were made of wood, Pioneer was constructed with a wrought iron hull because she was built in what was then the nation’s center for iron shipbuilding. Today, she is the sole American merchant sailing vessel with an iron hull. Through offering sails aboard Pioneer, the Seaport Museum provides an exceptional experience to the public, catering to inquisitive students, seasoned New Yorkers, and eager visitors alike. By offering unique opportunity to venture out onto the water, this remarkable vessel grants guests a new vantage point to see the city allowing guests to forge a deeper connection with New York’s maritime past and present, illustrating exactly “Where New York Begins.” seaportmuseum.org/about-pioneer
