I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Monthly Mashup for August, 2020 Birthdays and Meghan Trainor

Me - My topic for this month is birthdays because tomorrow is my birthday. When I was little, it was exciting to have a birthday. Now, that I am older it's not as exciting anymore. I don't like getting older, and I don't usually get presents right on my birthday or that many presents at all. Usually, I see a Broadway show on my birthday which is exciting. This year since there aren't any Broadway shows I am not going to be able to. I am not happy about that. It is really disappointing because for the past three years I have seen a show on my birthday, and I was planning on continuing the tradition. However, I can't. I do like getting a cake on my birthday. I like to get an ice cream cake. I don't like regular cakes as much because I don't like icing very much, but I love ice cream cake. I love Carvel ice cream cakes because I love cake crunchies. We always get extra crunchies for my birthday. Now, that I am older I usually get money for my birthday which I like to use for getting theater tickets and/or books. I guess birthdays are still okay, but not as good as when I was younger.

Title Thank You (Deluxe) TREAT MYSELF [Explicit]

Mom - My topic for this month is Meghan Trainor. Meghan Trainor is a good singer. She is a good role model for young girls because not only is she not a skinny little toothpick herself, but she encourages young girls that they don't have to be either. Her first song All About That Bass, in particular, reinforces this attitude. She is also a good role model because she is a very confident poised young woman. It is hard to believe that she is only in her twenties. She seems much older and more mature than that. She and the singer, Adele are very similar in that way. In addition to All About That Bass I especially like the songs Lips Are Movin, Dear Future Husband, Credit, and Title which were also on her first album. Before, I heard the song Title I couldn't even imagine what a song called Title would be about or why somebody would call their album that.  With that album, she had kind of an old fashioned vibe which I liked. It was different than most if not all other singers of her age at that time. However, her subsequent albums have been more mainstream and more like so many other singers out there. She is still a good role model, but to me, she has lost her uniqueness as a singer.

And that's our view. What's on your mind?

Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.

1) AMAS MUSICAL THEATRE’S
HIT OFF-BROADWAY MUSICAL

ROMEO & BERNADETTE

A MUSICAL TALE OF VERONA AND BROOKLYN

MUSIC VIDEO OF

"MOONLIGHT TONIGHT OVER BROOKLYN”

SET TO STREAM SEPTEMBER 7-10

ALL DONATION PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT FOOD BANK FOR NEW YORK CITY

Amas Musical Theatre (Donna Trinkoff, Artistic Producer) and the cast and creative team of Romeo & Bernadette: A Musical Tale of Verona and Brooklyn, have created a Zoom-inspired video of a show-stopping moment from the hit show - “Moonlight Tonight Over Brooklyn” - a Valentine to the Borough of Love. In fact, Theatermania touted: “The company and the four-member band, led by music director Aaron Gandy, have a standout in "There's Moonlight Over Brooklyn," a song that makes a good argument for a cast recording.” The video will stream for four days only – September 7-10 – on the Amas Musical Theatre YouTube channel – here. Music may indeed be the food of love, but our bodies need nourishment as well. To that end, donations will benefit the Food Bank of the City of New York, and can be made through the Amas portal at: www.amasmusical.org/donate.

This is just one magical moment from Amas Musical Theatre’s critically acclaimed production which ran in early 2020 and was showered with multiple honors: Off-Broadway Alliance Award nomination: 2020 “Best Musical”– Romeo & BernadetteDrama Desk Award nominations: “Outstanding Book of a Musical” – Mark Saltzman and “Outstanding Lyrics of a Musical”- Mark Saltzman; Outer Critics Circle Award honorees: “Outstanding Book of a Musical” – Mark Saltzman, “Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical” (Broadway or Off Broadway): Judy McLane.

Romeo, yes, THAT Romeo - awakens and finds himself in 1960 Brooklyn, chasing a girl he believes is his beloved Juliet. But no, it's Bernadette, the beautiful, foul-mouthed daughter of a crime family in this wild spoof of Shakespeare’s timeless tale.

8) THE ORCHESTRA NOW RELEASES BURIED ALIVE
A NEW RECORDING ON BRIDGE RECORDS

The Orchestra Now (TŌN) has just released a new CD on Bridge Records titled Buried Alive, recorded at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College in November 2019. The Orchestra is led by conductor Leon Botstein and features German baritone Michael Nagy in Othmar Schoeck’s song cycle Buried Alive—adapted from Gottfried Keller’s poem Lebendig begraben—about a man who wakes up to find he has been buried by mistake. This release marks only the second recording ever of Lebendig begraben, since a 1962 recording with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau almost 60 years ago. The album also includes Honegger’s wildly rhythmic Rugby, written to evoke the spirit of the game, and the only known recording of Mitropoulos’ 1929 Concerto Grosso, considered by the composer to be his best work.

All three works on this CD were written in the 1920s, a time of unprecedented experimentation and innovation in all the arts, including music. Composers from Schoenberg to Stravinsky and Bartók to Prokofiev became pioneers of musical modernism and Buried Alive brings together three composers of vastly different backgrounds during that turbulent decade.

Leon Botstein, conductor
Michael Nagy, baritone
The Bard Festival Chorale
Schoeck: Buried Alive
Honegger: Rugby
Mitropoulos: Concerto Grosso

FREE Entry to 1885 Tall Ship Wavertree
FREE Outdoor Exhibition on Pier 16

South Street Seaport Museum will open the 1885 tall ship Wavertree to the public on September 5, 6, 12, 19 and 26 with timed entry, from 11am-5pm at Pier 16 (Fulton and South Streets). Entry is FREE and includes access to the ship's outdoor areas, including the main deck (via stairs and an angled gangway) and raised rear deck (accessible via ladder-type stairs). seaportmuseum.org/visitwavertree

Guests will visit the open-air portions of the historic traditional sailing ship docked at Pier 16. Gaze up at the towering masts and miles of rigging and down into the vast cargo storage area. Take a peek at the galley and at the crew's quarters, a bunk room where twenty sailors tried to stay warm and dry in the worst weather. Climb up onto the quarterdeck and pose for a photo at the ship's wheel, and enjoy the view as you look out across New York Harbor and see the Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn Heights. Or look landward and see the skyline of the Financial District, which flourished because of ships like Wavertree which brought in the goods that helped businesses thrive. Wavertree is designated on the National Register of Historic Places and represents the thousands of ships that docked along New York's waterfront over the centuries. More information on the history of the Wavertree can be found at southstreetseaportmuseum.org/wavertree

Visits will be self-guided along a set route. The Museum will allow no more than 35 guests on board the ship at any time to encourage social distancing from different households. All guests above the age of two will be required to wear a face covering at all times aboard Wavertree and at the Museum's Open-air pop-up gift shop booth on Pier 16.

The Seaport Museum is also offering a new, FREE outdoor exhibition on Pier 16, which will provide the opportunity to discover this chapter of New York City's history. This series of panels and window graphics will celebrate the people of all backgrounds who lived and worked in the South Street Seaport Historic District, and the many businesses that created the foundations for New York to thrive and become the business and culture mecca it is today. Using historic photographs, prints, lithographs, and paintings, the exhibition highlights some of the Seaport Museum's collection of more than 28,000 artifacts and works of art, and over 55,000 historic records.

South Street Seaport Museum active Members and Volunteers will have the opportunity to be among the first to visit Wavertree and the outdoor exhibition on Member and Volunteer Preview Day, Saturday, August 29, from 11am to 5pm.  Memberships start at $50 and help support Museum's exhibitions, preserve the ships and the collections, grow public programs, and serve over 12,000 students through education initiatives.  To join the Museum as a Member, visit seaportmuseum.org/membership.

The South Street Seaport Museum's indoor spaces are currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wavertree is permanently moored at Pier 16 and does not sail the harbor. Access to Wavertree requires climbing a small set of ladder-type [to match description above] stairs and an angled gangway. Wavertree Open Days are subject to cancellation in the event of severe weather.

Fairmount Park Conservancy & Community

Dedicate New Signage

WHAT:            Dedication of Newly Upgraded Boxers’ Trail SignageFairmount Park Conservancy and representatives of the City of Philadelphia, the boxing community, and Strawberry Mansion dedicate a modern monument to local boxing greats. The Boxers’ Trail Gateway at Dauphin and Greenland Drives, an underutilized structure located at the beginning of the trail, has been revitalized to honor Philadelphia’s legendary boxers, including Smokin’ Joe Frazier. NOTE: the event will follow physical distancing guidelines, and all participants and media are required to wear masks.

WHO:              Maura McCarthy, Ph.D., Executive Director, Fairmount Park Conservancy

Joe Frazier, Jr., son of Joe Frazier

Weatta Collins Frazier, daughter of Joe Frazier

Tonetta Graham, Executive Director, Strawberry Mansion Community Development Corporation

Kathryn Ott Lovell, Commissioner, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation

Bernard Hopkins, former professional boxer

WHEN:            Wednesday, September 2, 10 am

WHERE:          East Fairmount Park Boxers’ Trail, located at the corner of Dauphin and Greenland Drives

DETAILS:        In collaboration with local agency Little Giant Creative (LGC), Fairmount Park Conservancy installed a series of informative panels on a pergola structure to celebrate the Boxers’ Trail, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department’s boxing programs across the city, and Philadelphia’s rich boxing history.

The original gateway at Dauphin and Greenland drives was installed in 2008. Today, the new-and-improved gateway features custom lettering reading, “Boxers’ Trail” and a “shadow boxer” silhouette. The panels highlight the boxing careers of Bennie Briscoe, Joe Frazier, Bernard Hopkins, and Matthew Saad Muhammad and provide a map of the Boxers’ Trail. Other panels include tips on fundamental boxing moves demonstrated by amateur boxers from Athletic Rec’s boxing gym as well as the creed of Joe Frazier’s gym. The Conservancy and LGC collaborated with the Strawberry Mansion community, the local boxing community, and family members of the boxers to creatively tell the story of the Boxers’ Trail.

The Boxers’ Trail is a 3.8-mile trail with wooded and paved paths that winds through East Fairmount Park and is deeply tied to Philadelphia’s boxing culture. Many Philadelphia boxers, including Smokin’ Joe Frazier, have used the trail as part of their training regimes. Legend has it that when Muhammad Ali wanted to challenge Joe Frazier, he came to the Boxers’ Trail because he knew that’s where he would find Frazier.

VIRTUAL BOXERS’ TRAIL 5K

The dedication of the Boxers’ Trail Gateway comes three weeks before the annual Boxers’ Trail 5K Walk and Run hosted by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation with the support of Philly Races. This year the annual race is going virtual. Participants are encouraged to run or walk the trail from September 19-26, 2020. Registration is $20 and proceeds support youth programs at Mander Playground in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. Learn more at boxerstrail5k.com
