I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Skyscraper Museum

We were given free tickets to the Skyscraper Museum for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: The Skyscraper Museum

Where: 39 Battery Place
            New York, NY

Who: All ages
Me- The Skyscraper Museum is very interesting. It was cool how they said that since the building that the museum is located in is only one story, they use mirrors on the floor and on the ceiling to make it look like a skyscraper. It was unique and fun for taking pictures. There was a scale model of the Twin Towers. It is one of only two in the world. The other one is at the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Some of the exhibits change and some are permanent. Now, they have an exhibit about buildings ten stories or taller from 1875 to 1900. They had a computer where you could look things up. You could see current buildings and see what they looked like when they were built. You could see buildings that fit the category but no longer exist too. Also, it had a lot information about the buildings like when they were build and how tall they were and everything. There was an interactive map on the wall. and you could see where different types of buildings where located. There was also a really really big map on a table. We learned how skyscrapers can actually change the landscape. Before the Twin Towers were built the location where the museum is now would have been underwater. However, now there is a whole land area there called Battery Park City. We learned about the Freedom Tower. They had a contest to pick a design for it. They picked one but they changed it a lot when they actually built it.. They had a model of what Freedom Tower was supposed to look like and a picture of what is actually does look like. There was a model of  New York and a model of another city, but I don't remember what the other city was. New York was much more crowded and the buildings were closer together. The Skyscraper Museum was a really fun place, and I would totally recommend it. People who like skyscrapers would especially like it.
Mom- If you want to learn about all those big tall buildings, the skyscraper museum is the place to go. Even though the museum is located in New York City, it is not only about New York City skyscrapers, it covers skyscrapers all over the world. The museum is small but very fascinating. If you can get a tour while you are there, you should do so. It is definitely worthwhile. You will learn even more interesting information then you would on your own. However, if you go around the museum on your own, it is still an impressive place. Some of the interesting things you can learn about at the museum include the changing downtown New York skyline from before the Twin Towers to during the Twin Towers to after, and a history of the tallest buildings in the world. Whether you are interested in history or just like looking a big tall buildings, you should enjoy this museum. Even younger children who do not necessarily care or have the attention span to learn about the history would probably enjoy looking at the pictures and models of the big skyscrapers. The museum does hold programs for young children including some programs for children starting as young as 3 years of age. The museum is small enough to go through quickly, but filled with enough information, pictures and models that you can go through at a leisurely rate and try to take in as much information as you can if you prefer. The museum is also completely accessible and reasonably priced at $5.00 per ticket and only $2.50 for students and seniors. For more information go to http://www.skyscraper.org/index.htm,

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: The Missing Golden Ticket and Other Splendiferous Secrets and Love is a Four-Legged Word

We may have been given one or more of the books mentioned below for review purposes. This post also may contain affiliate links, If you click on a link and make a purchase, we may be compensated. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.
Me - Today I am recommending The Missing Golden Ticket and Other Splendiferous Secrets by Roald Dahl. It was about the writing of the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It also told how Roald Dahl felt about different things. In the back of the book it gave writing advice. This book was really interesting. It was fun to learn what the original draft of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was like and  reading it makes me want to read the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I have seen the original movie Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory but I have not seen the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and I have not read the book either. Kids that like Roald Dahl books especially those that like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would like this book.
Mom - Today I am recommending Love is a Four-Legged Word by Michele Gorman. Love is a Four-Legged Word is the story of Scarlet and Rufus and Shannon. Shannnon and Rufus were best friends but there was never anything romantic between them. When Rufus met, fell in love with, and married Scarlet, instead of breaking up the friendship Shannon and Scarlet became best friends as well. Scarlet even brought Shannon into her dog training business. Then, when  Scarlet and Rufus have trouble conceiving a baby suddenly everything changes and neither the marriage nor the friendship might survive. This book skillfully portrays a troubled marriage without picking sides. Both Scarlet and Rufus have their good points and bad points. Neither is a hero and neither is a villain. That makes the book seem more real. The book also does a good job of portraying a true friendship between two women.  It is a romance and a female buddy book, and a cute dog book all rolled into one.

A More Theater Monday Monthly Mash-up for November, 2016 School of Rock and Roebling and the Brooklyn Bridge

Me - My topic for this month is School of Rock the Musical. School of Rock is a really good show. It is based on the movie of the same name. It's about a man named Dewey Finn. He used to be in a rock band, but they kicked him out. He pretends to be a substitute teachers and then, he forms a band with the class because he wants to compete at the Battle of the Bands. I like the story and the music. I love all the songs. I listen to them all the time. I like the characters except for one named Patti who is annoying. Patti is Dewey's friend's girlfriend, and she hates Dewey. My favorite character is Katie. Katie is the bass player. The dancing in the show is basically just jumping around but it looks fun. It's really cool because the kids in the show all really play the instruments they play in the show. They are really talented. I saw the show with most of the original cast. However, recently they changed a lot of the people in the cast including a lot of the kids and the guy who plays Dewey. I am glad I saw it with most of the original cast because they were really good. The show is by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I never saw any of his other show's, but I loved School of Rock. It is my best show ever.

Mom - My topic for this month is the Roebling family and the Brooklyn Bridge. We recently saw a production of Roebling at Kelsey Theatre. Roebling is the story of John, Washington, and Emily Roebling and the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. It is interesting to learn about the history of the bridge and how it was built. Nowadays when everything seems to be built so quickly, it is hard to believe that the bridge took 14 years to make. It is sad to think of how many lives were lost in the building of the bridge. It is hard to imagine that at one time the Brooklyn Bridge was a state of the art bridge that was the biggest and tallest in the world. The show was written by playwright Mark Violi and had been performed at the Roebling Museum and the New Jersey State Museum as well as Actor's Net of Bucks County in Morrisville, PA prior to its limited one weekend run at the Kelsey Theatre. I am surprised the show has never been performed for school groups because it would make a good history lesson. For more about the show go to http://www.roeblingplay.com/index.html.
For another interesting story about the building of the Brooklyn Bridge see the book 21 Elephants and Still Standing, by April Jones Prince, the true story of when 21 elephants crossed the Brooklyn Bridge. Although the book is for children, the story is interesting for everyone. The book is available from Amazon and Barnes and Noble. There is also an episode of the TV series Mysteries of the Museum on Travel Channel that covers the incident. For even more about the Roebling's and the Brooklyn Bridge visit the Roebling Museum in Roebling, New Jersey. We have yet to visit the museum ourselves but when and if we do get there, we will bring you further information about it in a future Where-To-Go Wednesday post.
And that's our view. What's on your mind?

Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.

“Her mind already sinking back into that spent calm beyond the further troubling of any hope” is the final line of O’Neill’s horribly well-made, Pulitzer Prize-winning, starry-eyed, naive tragedy with New England home cooking, two brothers, one girl named Ruth, a farm, and whatever the hell is beyond…beyond…beyond the horizon?

This production is one of the capstone projects of City University of New York’s Translation Seminar on Public Engagement and Collaborative Research.

The Great God Brown
by Eugene O’Neill
Lead Artist: Eva von Schweinitz

“I love, thou lovest, he loves, she loves! She loves, she loves – what?”
Yes, what? Can we ever – even in the most intimate relationships – be, and be seen as, our true selves? Dion loves Margaret who only loves him when he’s wearing masquerade. Add a jealous best friend and a prostitute savant to a mix of exuberant exclamations and existential punchlines, and soon questions about truth, failure, and identity arise.
