I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

More Theater Monday- Wine in the Wilderness

We were given complimentary tickets to Wine in the Wilderness for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Wine in the Wildnerness

Where: Two River Theater
             21 Bridge Ave.
            Red Bank, NJ

Who: Recommended for Ages 16 and Up
Due to Strong Language, Adult Situations, and the Use of Racial Slurs

When: Through November 6, 2022

Wine in the Wilderness is a play about the stereotyping of black women. In the midst of the riots raging through his city, artist Bill Jameson is only interested in finishing his triptych of three paintings representing black womanhood, The first is the innocent young girl, the second is the maternal Mother Africa, and the third and the only one he has yet to paint is down and out and hardened by life. In his mind, she is what society has made of Black women. Then along comes, Tommy to model for him and teach Bill (and us all) that black women are so much more than stereotypes. The acting in this show is all good, but Crystal Dickinson is particularly terrific in the role of Tommy. This is a definitely show that makes you think.

And that's our view. For more information about Wine in the Wilderness or to purchase tickets, visit tworivertheater.org/whats-on/wine-in-the-wilderness.

Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday,

Living Dead in Denmark

When the dead walk…you run! Living Dead in Denmark is an action-adventure/horror sequel to Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Set five years after the events of the original, the undead have risen to power and are trying to take over the world, led by the zombie lord and true king of Denmark. Fortinbras, assembling a formidable opposition, has resurrected the corpses of some of the greatest women Shakespeare had to offer: Lady Macbeth, Juliet, and a very angry Ophelia. A clash of the undead titans ensues! Using Hamlet as a jumping-off point, Qui Nguyen throws in martial arts, horror movies, pop songs, puppetry, and comic books in this new play.

Ain't No Mo

Having premiered to overwhelming acclaim at The Public Theater, Ain’t No Mo’ dares to ask the incendiary question, “What if the U.S. government attempted to solve racism … by offering Black Americans one-way plane tickets to Africa?” The answer comes in the form of an outrageous and high-octane comedy about being Black in today’s America. From the mischievous mind of the youngest American playwright in Broadway history, Jordan E. Cooper (“The Ms. Pat Show”), Ain’t No Mo’ seamlessly blends sketch comedy, satire and avant garde theater to leave audiences crying with laughter—and thinking through the tears.

Dear Mom Sorry for Being a Bitch

A one-woman (with guests!) comedic play, written by and starring Christine Covode, Dear Mom, Sorry For Being A Bitch details the evolution of a girl's relationship with her mom as time takes them through the ages. Starting in elementary school, when Mom is your best friend, through middle and high school when she becomes the bane of your existence, all the way until college and beyond when you finally begin to appreciate her. Come ride the hilarious yet deeply moving roller coaster ride and watch as Christine peels back the woman behind the minivan wheel.  With the help of a Motley crew of characters, our protagonist travels back in time and retells each b!tchy phase of life with honesty, humor and deep apology. Knoxville

Based on James Agee’s autobiographical, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, A Death in the Family, the story begins as Agee struggles to write his greatest work—about the event that touched his young life and the effect it had on his mother, his town, and his own future. A powerful illumination of the forces that shape who we are, Knoxville is a universal coming-of-age story about family, faith, and love—and about the boy who will grow up to write it.

A Man of No Importance

A Man of No Importance tells the story of an amateur theatre group in 1960s Dublin and their leader, bus driver Alfie Byrne (Jim Parsons). Determined to stage a production of Oscar Wilde’s Salome despite the objections of local church authorities, Alfie confronts the forces of bigotry and shame over a love "that dare not speak its name.” This evocative and award-winning musical illustrates the redemptive power of theater, love, and friendship, all for a man of seemingly no importance.

Chester Bailey

In a stateside hospital at the close of World War II, a young man recovers from catastrophic injuries. Or so the doctors have told him. But Chester Bailey denies what’s happened to him has actually happened, which is how he comes under the care of Dr. Philip Cotton. Older, wounded in his own ways, Cotton is charged with leading Chester back to reality. The journey is not what either man expected. Chester Bailey stars real-life father and son, Tony Award winner Reed Birney (The Humans, “House of Cards”) and Ephraim Birney (“Gotham,” “The Americans”), as doctor and patient, and is directed by Ron Lagomarsino (Driving Miss Daisy, “Picket Fences”).

F*ck the 7th Grade

An adolescent romance, a brief rise to pop stardom, a queer musical memoir (about how we’ll never get out of middle school) conceived by award-winning singer-songwriter Jill Sobule – whose 1990s hits include “Supermodel” and the original “I Kissed a Girl.”

Time travel back to the 70s as Jill Sobule, with the help of her middle school band, weaves a melodic tale about surviving 7th grade to become the first pop music artist to pen the first openly-Queer song that landed on the Billboard Top 20. Jill guides the audience through the inner turmoil of pre-pubescence, the elation of getting a record deal, and the frustration and disheartening politics of dealing with the recording industry as a Queer artist. Can she ultimately embrace the song that made her a household name?

3) Flushing Town Hall Announces 8th Annual Diwali Festival

The festival will feature a rangoli art competition and display, a dance party and performances,

and delicious Indian cuisine

On Saturday, November 5, Flushing Town Hall will host its eighth annual Diwali Festival—a celebration welcoming audiences of all ages and cultures and a very popular event each year at the Hall

Abha Roy, a master teaching artist and artistic director of the Srijan Dance Company, will share the stage with IMGE: Ishita Mili Global Exposé for a performance rooted in Indian classical, hip-hop, and contemporary dance. Attendees can also enjoy a dance party with instruction on traditional moves from Roy, a Kathak classical dancer, and Mili, a Bharatanatyam dancer. Festival goers can also explore traditional rangoli design with artist Anju Gupta, savor Indian foods with Queens Curry Kitchen, and discover ayurvedic treatments with Shweta Parmar

The Indian holiday of Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a day of solidarity, where the soft light of diyas – or oil-wick candles – illuminate streets and homes, banishing the darkness of ignorance and suffering. It began as a part of an ancient harvest festival, which celebrated the fertility of the earth and prosperity of the new harvest. Though Diwali has taken on a significant meaning in Hinduism, in India it is celebrated by all groups regardless of religious affiliation as a time of renewal and growth.

At the event, Flushing Town Hall will present the artwork of the winners of its Rangoli Design Competition. Rangoli is an age-old art form from India. Derived from a Sanskrit word meaning “rows of colors,” rangoli is a celebratory Hindu art form usually drawn in homes or courtyards with the hope of inviting blessings from the gods.

6) U.S. PREMIERE OF

MONET’S GARDEN

THE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE

COMES TO NEW YORK CITY

NOVEMBER 1 THROUGH JANUARY 8

Monet’s Garden The Immersive Experience today announced its U.S. premiere in New York City beginning November 1, 2022 with an official opening set for Friday, November 4. Taking over the grand and historic Seamen’s Bank Building at 30 Wall Street, in the heart of New York’s Financial District, the limited engagement will continue through January 8, 2023. Tickets are on-sale now.

Monet’s Garden thrusts visitors into a multi-sensory and multimedia voyage that reveals the inspiration and history behind some of the world’s greatest masterpieces. Employing an unprecedented range of visual, phonic and olfactory stimuli, this enchanting exhibition provides complete and total immersion into the work and world of Claude Monet (1840-1926).

Visitors are guided through experiential galleries, each providing fresh perspectives on Monet's life and new experiences of his cherished masterpieces.

The exhibition is enhanced by aromas of lavender wafting in the air and the romanticism of classical music to serenade visitors with an educational and enlightening multi-language narration in The Showroom. This multi-sensory culmination has never before been presented by a past immersive experience in New York.

The experience begins where Monet, “The Founder of Impressionism”, created his great works. The term "Impressionism" is derived from the title of Monet‘s painting Impressionsoleil levant, exhibited in the 1874 ("exhibition of rejects"), initiated by Monet. The experience includes the staging of Monet’s bridge and world-famous garden landscape in Giverny, Normandy.

The water lily paintings, the towering culmination of Monet's creative work, are presented as the finale of the experience. The entire room transforms into a gigantic water lily pond, creating placing visitors right in the center of an infinite dreamscape.

The result is a complete immersion into Monet’s paintings, and also in his perceptions, techniques and ways of conceiving his art. Monet's central themes of light, shadow, wind, and the element of water as a reflective surface are integrated and woven into visual poetry with the use of state-of-the-art technology.

The narration is available for patrons in English, Spanish, French,

Chinese (Mandarin) and Japanese.

7) MorDance
presents
Works in Progress
November 5, 2021
at Martha Graham Studios

MorDance presents Works in Progress on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 7:30pm at Martha Graham Studios, 55 Bethune St, NYC. This intimate showing is an opportunity to peer into the creative process and hear from the artists themselves. Tickets are $30 ($25 for students and seniors) and can be purchased online at mordance.org/calendar/works-in-progress.

MorDance, a trailblazing female-led dance company celebrated for creating original collaborative works that push the boundaries of classical ballet, invites audience members to peek into the inspirations and creation of two new ballets and engage in a stimulating discussion with artistic director Morgan McEwen and her collaborators about the creative process. This is a thrilling opportunity to dive inside these ballets before they premiere at Gerald Lynch Theater in the Spring of 2023.

Work 1: The first ballet will take flight from Chris Jordan's critically acclaimed documentary, ALBATROSS, which powerfully depicts a vulnerable albatross population incurring the impact of mass consumption, global industry, and human unconsciousness. I look to articulate this challenging narrative through a choreography of avian movement and breathtaking wingspans. I will collaborate with composer and experimental violinist Josh Knowles on a spacious arrangement that expresses both soaring heights and the ominous weight of dire circumstances. Josh will compose and record this piece on a single violin looped and layered through multiple distortion pedals.

Work 2: Inspired by Emily Dickinson's transcendent and radically outspoken poem of the same title, our second ballet, They Shut Me Up In Prose, will likewise evoke a young woman overcoming sexism in an overwhelmingly patriarchal society. This piece will interlace modern movement and classical ballet vernacular across styles and histories. Appropriately, Polina Nazaykinskaya will create a contemporary score to be played on classical instruments. Polina's unique experience as an internationally renowned composer and a woman will bring extraordinary artistry and meaningful perspective to the themes portrayed. The arrangement will eventually be performed live by five musicians: a pianist alongside a classical string quartet.

Les Ballet Afrik: New York Is Burning by Omari Wiles – World Premiere
Saturday and Sunday, November 5 and 6, 7:30 pm
Works & Process at the Guggenheim, Peter B. Lewis Theater
Ticket Link - $35, Choose-What-You- Pay

House of Oricci founding father and ballroom community legend Omari Wiles brings ballroom to the Guggenheim in the long-awaited premiere of New York Is Burning, commissioned by Works & Process, featuring Wiles’s AfrikFusion, which combines traditional African dances and Afrobeat with house dance and vogue.

The 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning received critical acclaim for its depiction of the New York drag ball scene and of voguing as a powerful expression of personal pride in the face of racism, homophobia, and the stigma of the AIDS crisis. Just as Paris Is Burning did for New York in the 1980s, New York Is Burning reflects the aspirations, desires, and yearnings of a diverse group of dancers in a city beset by health, racial, and financial crises.

Commissioned by Works & Process in 2019, prior to the pandemic, as an homage to Paris Is Burning on the documentary’s thirtieth anniversary, Wiles’s new work centers on the artists for whom his dance company serves as a surrogate family, including Kya Azeen, Eva Bust A’ Move, Algin Ford-Sterling, Alora Martinez, Shireen Rahimi, Milerka Rodriguez, Karma Stylz, Yuki Sukezane, and Yuhee Yang.

Wiles developed the Works & Process commission for his company, Les Ballet Afrik, in a summer 2020 Works & Process bubble residency at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, a spring 2021 Works & Process bubble residency at Catskill Mountain Foundation, and a January 2022 Works & Process LaunchPAD “Process as Destination” residency at The Church, Sag Harbor in partnership with Guild Hall. Throughout this time, in some of New York State’s first permitted performances during the pandemic, Works & Process coproduced Les Ballet Afrik’s outdoor, filmed, and preview performances at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and the Guggenheim Museum rotunda. The company has performed previews at Jacob’s Pillow, New Victory Theater, and SummerStage.

Commissioned by Works & Process, UNDERSCORED is a multi-faceted project that acts as a living archive of five generations of NYC club dancers. Rooted in the intergenerational stories and memories of NYC underground club heads, UNDERSCORED was created in collaboration with legendary elders from the underground dance community such as Archie Burnett, Michele Saunders, and Brahms “Bravo” LaFortune and Ephrat Asherie Dance company members Ephrat “Bounce” Asherie, Manon Bal, Ron “Stealth-1” Chunn Jr., Teena Marie Custer, Val “Ms. Vee” Ho, and Matthew “Megawatt” West. The performers, ranging in age from 27 to 79, share lived experiences, stories, and vibes from seminal underground parties, including David Mancuso’s the Loft, Larry Levan’s Paradise Garage and Timmy Regisford’s Shelter. Featuring costumes by David Dalrymple and building on the intergenerational transference of knowledge and culturally reflective movement that happens night after night on dance floors across the city, UNDERSCORED explores the ever-changing physical and musical landscape of New York City’s underground dance community.

Commissioned by Works & Process in 2018, UNDERSCORED makes its long-awaited world premiere in the Peter B. Lewis Theater at the Guggenheim following a summer 2019 residency at LUMBERYARD, summer 2020 Works & Process bubble residency at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, a spring 2021 Works & Process bubble residency at Bridge Street Theatre with the support of the Mellon Foundation and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and May 2022 Works & Process LaunchPAD “Process as Destination” residency at Catskill Mountain Foundation. Throughout this time, in some of New York State’s first permitted performances during the pandemic, Works & Process coproduced outdoor, filmed, and preview performances of UNDERSCORED at Harlem Stage, Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and in the Guggenheim Museum rotunda. During summer of 2022, in-process performances of UNDERSCORED were presented at the Vail Dance Festival and The Yard.

Masterz at Work Dance Family: ALL INCLUSIVE AND MORE by Courtney Washington Balenciaga, with The Masterz Ball in the rotunda
Monday, November 21 at 7:30 pm
Works & Process at the Guggenheim, Peter B. Lewis Theater and Rotunda
Ticket Link - $35, Choose-What-You-Pay

A legend within the ballroom community, founder of the Kiki House of Juicy Couture, leader of The House of Balenciaga, and this year’s Latex Ball Avis Penda’vis Angel Award winner, Black trans femme choreographer Courtney Washington Balenciaga creates dances that are a representation of resiliency, and which foster community in under-resourced areas of Brooklyn. Her new Works & Process commission, ALL INCLUSIVE AND MORE fuses street dance, street jazz, ballroom, vogue, and hip-hop. Informed by her own experience as a queer teenager who found refuge from teasing in dance, the work conveys how her gender transition spurred transformative emotional, creative, and physical liberation. An expansion of ALL INCLUSIVE, which was commissioned in 2020 and performed in the Guggenheim’s rotunda as performances were reopening in New York on March 31, 2021, this latest work furthers her ambitions toward shaping a more inclusive, fair, representative, and colorful world. Mya Donyale Bonilla, Producer and Programs Manager at Black Trans Femmes in the Arts Collective, will moderate the discussion with Courtney Washington Balenciaga.

In conjunction with the Guggenheim’s Member Mondays, this performance in the theater will continue into the rotunda with The Masterz Ball featuring commentating by Snookie Juicy West and music by DJ Byrell. All audience members are encouraged to participate in the ball, with categories including All Inclusive, Best Dressed, and Creative Expression.

Commissioned by Works & Process in 2020, this work was developed in a Works & Process bubble residency at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park in March 2021. This work will also receive a two-week Works & Process LaunchPAD “Process as Destination” residency at Bethany Arts Community in November 2022, which will provide creative time and commissioning resources for Masterz at Work Dance Family and its uplifting and inspiring dancers Luis, Lamell “Jay Parel” Clemons, Jai’Quin Coleman, DeAndre Cousley, Mehki Cuffee, Rasheed “NewBorn” Lucas Jr., Guya Marie, Armani Moore, Dashaun “DayDay” Peals, and Brian Starke.

12) ZviDance Presents
the World Premiere of
Migrations
at New York Live Arts
November 3-5, 2022

ZviDance (Zvi Gotheiner, Choreographer and Artistic Director) presents Migrationsan evening-length dance performance collaboration between Zvi Gotheiner, composer Scott Killian, lighting designer Mark London, and seven dancers. Migrations is in line with Gotheiner’s previous works that reflect on the collision of humanity with nature. In MigrationsGotheiner will focus his creative attention on bird migration imagery and tendencies as a poetic mirroring for the current acceleration of human migration as a result of wars and the diminishing of life-sustaining resources due to global warming. Bird’s migration patterns are made in response to changes in food availability, habitat, or weather. These days, war is displacing people in Ukraine and the world is experiencing another wave of refugees. These concepts serve as a point of departure for the creation of Migrations. The choreography utilizes bird’s flocking imagery in the design of large group work, and flight imagery for the creation of trios and duets. Killian’s cinematic electronic score supports a sense of heroic struggle when traveling through the elements, while London’s light design will create landscapes that give the work a transitory sense of place. Migrations will have a live staged premiere on November 3-5, 2022 (Thu and Fri at 7:30pm, Sat at 2pm and 7:30pm) at at New York Live Arts, 219 W 19th St., New York, NY. Tickets are $25 general admission and $18 for students and seniors and are available for purchase at newyorklivearts.org/event/migrations.
