I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Theater Thursday - The Hope Hypothesis

We were given free tickets to The Hope Hypothesis for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: The Hope Hypothesis

Where: Voyage Theater Company production at The Sheen Center
             18 Bleeker St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 15 and Up

When: Through November 15, 2019

Mom's view: Amena is young law student of Syrian birth. When she goes to a government facility to finalize her immigration paperwork,  the clerk takes one look at her birth certificate and panics which sets off an unfortunate series of events. The Hope Hypothesis is a timely show about the current state of the world where living under the constant threat of terrorism has people on edge and ready to jump to conclusions and react negatively at the slighest provocation. Watching this show is like driving by an accident, you don't know whether to stare right at it or look away in horror.  However, in this case, you will definitely want to watch.  The Hope Hypothesis is an extremely well written, well cast and terrifically performed play. If you like shows that don't try to offer any easy answers but really make you think, you wil definitely like this show.

And that's Mom's view.

Tune in Saturday for Still More Theater Saturday.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - The Statue of Liberty

We were given free tickets to the Statue of Liberty for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Statue of Liberty

Where: Liberty Island
             New York, NY

Who: All ages

Me- I had never been to the Statute of Liberty before, and I have always wanted to go. I was a little disappointed that we didn't get to go up in the crown, but it was still fun. You walk up or take the elevator. I took the elevator up and back down too. My Mom and Dad took the elevator up and walked down. It was cool being up on the Statute of Liberty. The views were pretty. It was very crowded though, and there wasn't a lot of space to walk around.

There is also a museum at the Statute of Liberty. The museum is not very big, but it is interesting. It has a lot of artifacts and pictures and things. Unfortunately, when we were there a lot of the items were out for restoration, however. There were still a lot of things to see though so we still enjoyed the museum. There were propoganda posters from when the statue was being built because it was taking a lot of money and a lot of time. There were ads which used different images of the statue for promotional purposes. There was a lot of other stuff too. It didn't take a long time to go through the museum, but it was still worth it.

Mom - The Statue of Liberty is one of the most iconic locations in the world. It is also a great place to visit for all ages. If you are interesting in visiting, there are some important things to keep in mind. First of all, you should be aware that Statue Cruises is the only official provider of tickets and tours to the Statue of Liberty. If you purchase tickets from a vendor on the streets of New York City, they are likely to be counterfeit. Also, you will have to go through a strict security check to visit the Statue. It is not as severe as the security check at the airport where you have to take your shoes off. However, it is stricter than in most other locations.

Once you arrive at Liberty Island, you don't even have to go up in the Statue to have a good time. You can just wander around the grounds and get a close up few of the statue. There is also a restaurant, a couple of stores, and a museum. The museum tells the history of the statue and is full of interesting historic artifacts, documents and pictures. However, when we visited, unfortunately, many of the items from the collection were out for restoration.

Of course, most people are going to want to go up in the Statue.  Tickets to the pedestal are included with your ferry fare and your reservation to visit the pedestal is made when you purchase your tickets. If you are very ambitious and/or you are looking to get exercise, you might want to walk up to the pedestal. If not, you can take the elevator up most of the way. Just be aware especially if you are claustrophic that there is not a whole lot of space around the pedestal, and it can get quite crowded.

If you want to visit the crown, you will have to purchase a separate ticket and walk up at least 162 steps. If you walk up the whole way from the ground to the crown, it is the equivalent of walking up a 20 story building.  Be aware that if you visit on a windy day, the Statue might shake and you will really feel it as you walk up to the crown and when you are there. The crown is also a very small tight space. It can get very crowded, but  you won't have a lot of time there anyway.  The views are better from the pedestal. You can see beautiful panaromic views from the pedestal, and you can only see limited views of Brooklyn from the crown. However, if you still want to visit the crown, you should make arrangements as soon as you arrive on Liberty Island as only a limited number of crown tickets are sold per day. Since visits to the Statue of Liberty's torch have been off limits for more than a century, the crown is as high you can currently go.

And that's our view.

Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.

Tips for Tuesday - Movies: A Cinderella Story A Christmas Wish & Books: Everybody Has A Book in Them

We may have been given one or more of the movies, books and/or other products mentioned below for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Movies: A Cinderella Story A Christmas Wish

Me - Today I am recommending A Cinderella Story A Christmas Wish. This version of the Cinderella Story takes places during the holiday season and is about a girl who is forced to perform as an elf in a store holiday display and finds herself falling in love with the guy who has been hired to play a young Santa. Although at times the story can be kind of hokey and unnbelievable and a little bit cliched, ultimately it is a sweet and romantic movie. It puts a new spin on the Cinderella story. Anyone who loves romance especially Christmas or fairy tale romances will love this story.

For a clip from the film, visit https://youtu.be/fITbwcsj_xU

A Cinderella Story A Christmas Wish is available on Blu-ray and DVD from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment today!

Books: Everybody Has A Book Inside of Them How to Bring It Out

Mom - Today I am recommending Everybody Has A Book Inside of Them How to Bring It Out by Ann Marie Sabath. This book is a very quick and a very inspirational read. Even if you don't think that you have enough to say about anything to write a book, you will find that you probably do. Even if you don't think you are capable of writing a book, you probably are. Although it is not likely that everyone that reads this book is actually going to go through with writing a book of their own, this book is very motivating and highly likely to at least inspire everyone to take some kind of action in their live that they may have wanted to take but didn't thing they were capable of and/or were previously unmotivated to take. It may just give you that extra push you have been looking for.

And that's our view.

Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

A More Theater Monday Monthly Mashup for October, 2019 - Panama Hattie and Quiet Enjoyment

We may have been given free tickets to one or more of the below mentioned shows for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Panama Hattie

Where: York Theater
             619 Lexington Avenue
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 13 and Up

When: Through November 3, 2019

Me - Today I am talking about Panama Hattie. Panama Hattie is the third and last show of this Fall's Musicals In Mufti series at the York Theater. The show is about a woman named Hattie who is engaged  to a man named Nick so she is trying to impress his  young daughter and his boss. This is a really good show. It is funny. It is full of good songs by Cole Porter. The acting is terrific especially that of Klea Blackhurst who plays Hattie and the adorable, Kylie Kuioka who plays Geraldine, Nick's young daughter. The friendship they develop is so sweet. This is a show not to be missed!

For more information about Panama Hattie or to purchase tickets, visit https://yorktheatre.org/on-stage/musicals-in-mufti.

What: Quiet Enjoyment

Where: Playroom Theater
             151 W. 46th St.
              New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 16 and Up

When: Through November 3, 2019

Mom - Today I am talking about Quiet Enjoyment. Quiet Enjoyment is a show about a co-op closing gone horribly wrong. Just the description of the show offers the promise of something hysterically funny. While the actual show is funny, it is a little less funny than it seems like it would be.The standouts in the cast are Samantha Mercado Tudda as Meredith Cudliup, the uptight junior manager handling her first co-op closing and Megan Simard as Karma the free spirited younger girlfriend of the co-op's owner. This is not to say that none of the other actors are any good just that these two were clearly the most impressive. All in all, while the show is entertaining, it is a little slow at times and feels like it could be a little funnier or maybe it would be with a slightly different cast.

Mahler Songs
Baritone Christian Gerhaher and pianist Gerold Huber have a 30-year partnership that began in their schooldays. Since then, the pair have devoted themselves to lied interpretation through performances, recordings and by teaching. This lyrical evening moves from the disenchanted wanderer of Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (“Songs of a Wayfarer”) to selected folkloric poetry settings of Des Knaben Wunderhorn (“The Boy’s Magic Horn”), concluding with the eternally poignant Kindertotenlieder. Together, Gerhaher and Huber have recorded the Schubert, Schumann, and Mahler cycles for Sony Music, as well as a new recording of Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin that was released in autumn 2017. The duo’s third Schumann CD, also including the Kerner Songs, was released in autumn 2018. Zauberland (Magic Land): An encounter with Schumann’s Dichterliebe Katie Mitchell directs Zauberland (Magic Land), a New York premiere starring soprano Julia Bullock and pianist Cédric Tiberghien. As violence blazes, a young woman waits at the border of Zauberland—a magical world of security and peace. But when she sleeps, her dreams are haunted by images of the burnt-out city that she was forced to abandon. A co-commission of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, Zauberland premiered at Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord on April 5, 2019. Katie Mitchell directed T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets at the 2011 White Light Festival. DIRECTED BY MICHAEL MONTEL
11 PERFORMANCES ONLY
OCTOBER 26, 2019 – NOVEMBER 3, 2019
AT THE YORK THEATRE AT SAINT PETER’S
Celebrating Broadway’s legendary Cole Porter, The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and rediscovery of musical gems from the past, continues their 50th Anniversary Season with its acclaimed Musicals in Mufti series celebrating the legendary Broadway composer. The series honors the illustrious songwriter behind such classics as Anything Goes, Kiss Me, Kate, Gay Divorce, Silk Stockings, Red, Hot and Blue, and Can-Can.
Closing out the 2019 Fall Mufti series is the 1940’s hit musical Panama Hattie, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter and book by Herbert Fields and B.G. DeSylva. Cole Porter and Ethel Merman teamed up for their fourth hit with 1940's Panama Hattie, in which a brassy nightclub owner must bid for the approval of her fiancé’s family—a task only made more complicated when she discovers a plan to blow up the Panama Canal. With a raucous book about sailors and singers in the Panama Canal Zone and a snappy Porter score that includes “Let’s Be Buddies,” “I've Still Got My Health,” and “Make It Another Old-Fashioned, Please,” Panama Hattie was a smash in its day; Brooks Atkinson in The New York Times stated, “if the Navy ever hears about Panama Hattie, it will be hard to keep the fleet in the Pacific. As far as that goes, it is going to be hard to keep New Yorkers at home in the evenings this winter." Performances begin Saturday afternoon, October 26, 2019 and will continue for 11 performances only through November 3, 2019 at The York Theatre Company at Saint Peter’s (entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue). Opening Night is Sunday evening, October 27, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.
