I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Theater Thursday - Merrily We Roll Along Proshot

We were given complimentary tickets to Merrily We Roll Along for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Merrily We Roll Along Pro Shot

 Where: Fathom Entertainment
               For theaters and showtimes, visit

Who: Recommended for Ages 14 and Up

When: Through December 18, 2025

If you missed the opportunity to see the recent revival of Merrily We Roll Along when it played New York's Hudson Theatre last year (or even earlier when it played Off Broadway's New York Theatre Workshop), you still have a few more days to catch the proshot in theaters courtesy of Fathom Entertainment. It's definitely worth the trip.

Although some of the singing voices are just okay, the acting is incredible.  Plus, the chemistry of the three leads: Jonathan Groff. Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Menendez is off the charts amazing. All three were nominated for Tony awards and deservedly so. Groff and Radcliffe actually won awards.

The show contains some great Sondheim songs, including "Old Friends", "Not A Day Goes By", and the title number, which gets repeated in various versions throughout the show. Despite this, the original production was a flop. It closed after only 16 performances and 44 previews. Since that time, the show has undergone substantial revisions, and numerous productions have been staged. However, it's hard to believe any of them could hold a candle to this excellent one. They do Sondheim proud. It was a shame he didn't live to see it.

And that's our view. For more about the Merrily We Roll Along Proshot or to purchase tickets, visit www.fathomentertainment.com/releases/merrily-we-roll-along

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Hoodwinked: How Marketers Use the Same Tactics as Cults & The Probably Son; Movie: The Merchants of Joy

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any books, products, and/or any other visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: Hoodwinked: How Marketers Use the Same Tactics as Cults & The Probable Son

Today, we recommend Hoodwinked: How Marketers Use the Same Tactics as Cults by Mara Einstein, PHD. This book equates the underhanded methods companies use to sell products or even to recruit people to sell their products with how cults use to draw in followers and keep them under their spell. The similarities are both uncanny and horrifying. The book thoroughly covers a variety of important topics, including Multi-Level Marketing, influencers, the way social media has changed not only how we buy and sell products but also our very politics, and so much more. You won't want to miss this very timely and extremely eye-opening book.

Today, we recommend The Probable Son by Cindy Jiban. After giving birth, Elsa is convinced that she has been given the wrong baby in the hospital. Her family tries to convince her that the baby is hers, and although she is unconvinced, she brings the baby home, but her son, nicknamed Bird, is not at all like the rest of her family.

Years later, Thomas, a student in one of the middle school math classes Elsa teaches, is so much like her younger son that she becomes convinced that he and Bird were switched at birth and Thomas is her real son. It doesn't go unnoticed when she starts paying more attention to Thomas, and vicious rumors quickly spread, leading to surprising revelations.

This is an extremely unique and original story. It is quite gripping and really makes you want to keep turning pages and find out what is going to happen next.  It is full of strong characters that feel very real.

Although it may be triggering for those dealing with maternal grief, especially those who've suffered a pregnancy loss, it does a good job of dealing with the subject. It highlights how the grief process, although necessary, is not a straightforward path, but is different for everyone, and sometimes initially manifests in unhealthy ways. It is also about family, not necessarily about families being perfect, but about families being there for each other when it counts.

Movie: The Merchants of Joy

Today, we recommend The Merchants of Joy. This documentary film is based on the book of the same name by Taylor A. Pierce. It is the story of the five families that control Christmas tree sales in New York City.  Although in some cases, businesses are passed down from one generation to another, in others, an outsider who started out working for one of the families then branched out on their own, with surprisingly little hard feelings for the most part.

The competition may be cutthroat, but the relationships are unexpectedly civil. These people genuinely care about each other, not just within the individual families but among the different families. It is heartwarming and encouraging. Corporate America should take a lesson from these people.

And that's our view. Hoodwinked: How Marketers Use the Same Tactics at Cults was published in February. The Probable Son was published last Tuesday, December 2. The Merchants of Joy is available on Amazon Prime now.

Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

More Theater Monday - Ebenzer Scrooge's Big Jersey Christmas Show

We received complimentary tickets to Ebenezer Scrooge's Big Jersey Christmas Show for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Ebenzer Scrooge's Big Jersey Christmas Show

Where: George Street Playhouse
             NBPAC
             11 Livingston Ave.
              New Brunswick, NJ

Who: Recommended for Ages 5 and Up

When: Through December 21, 2025

Ebenzer Scrooge's Big Jersey Christmas Show is the well-known tale of A Christmas Carol with a twist. It is set in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and there is a lot of Jersey-related humor thrown in as well. However, even if you are not from New Jersey, there's plenty of relatable humor for all.

The cast shines. Kevin Pariseau is a formidable presence in the role of Scrooge. His four fellow cast members slip into various roles with great ease and incredible skill. Kudos to Orville Mendoza, who not only flits back and forth between two characters in the same scene, but at one point even plays both of them at the same time.

There is even a bit of a holiday jam session at the end of the show. If you are looking for a show brimming with the spirit of the season that is at once extremely familiar and quite original, this one fits the bill.

And that's our view. For more about Ebenezer Scrooge's Big Jersey Christmas Show or to purchase tickets, visit, www.georgestreetplayhouse.org/events/detail/ebenezer-scrooges-big-jersey-christmas-show

The Bang Group’s beloved, witty response to The Nutcracker has enthralled audiences for more than two decades. Nut/Cracked takes its inspiration from all corners of the dance canon, from tap riffs to en pointe ballet, by way of bubble wrap, disco, and take-out noodles. In Nut/Cracked, choreographer David Parker finds beauty in the ridiculous, waltzing us through many incarnations of Tchaikovsky’s score including versions by Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller as well as the familiar orchestral suite.

Evolution on Trial: 100 Years After Scopes

Evolution on Trial: 100 Years after Scopes

Tuesday, December 11, 7 pm

What does the 1925 Scopes Trial still teach us a century later? In May 1925, high school teacher John Scopes was arrested and charged with teaching the theory of evolution, which the Tennessee state legislature had recently banned in public educational institutions throughout the state through the Butler Act. The eight-day jury trial ended with a guilty verdict, later reversed on a technicality, but the Butler Act was never again enforced. The highly publicized courtroom battle had succeeded in highlighting the evidence for evolution to a broad public, and the “Monkey Trial,” as it came to be known, marked a pivotal moment in the legal separation of theological teachings from public education. With an introduction by Brenda Wineapple, author of Keeping the Faith: God, Democracy, and the Trial that Riveted a Nation (2024), and moderated by Joseph L. Graves, professor of biological sciences at North Carolina A&T State University, this panel conversation — featuring Museum Curator Jessica Ware and Deputy Director of the National Center for Science Education Glenn Branch—explores how these debates have changed since the 1920s and how they continue to shape American culture today. Tickets are $5 for Members and $8 for the general public. Tickets are available on the Museum's online calendar.

From New York Times Best-Selling Author Lee Strobel, The Case for Miracles
Coming to Theatres Nationwide from Fathom Entertainment December 15-18

Fathom Miracles are sung about, preached about, and debated. But New York Times bestselling author Lee Strobel sets out to investigate them and put their factual validity to the test. His new feature-length film on the subject, The Case for Miracles, is coming to theatres nationwide December 15-18 from Fathom Entertainment, the leading specialty distributor of content to theatrical partners worldwide.

In The Case for Miracles, Strobel shows that miracles are not just wishful thinking or limited to the Bible, but they are credible events still breaking into our modern world -- and culminating in the Christmas miracle, just in time for the holiday season. Through gripping interviews, real-life stories, and his own personal reflections, Strobel crafts a case that challenges skeptics and strengthens believers.

Lee Strobel was an atheist. A thriving legal editor at The Chicago Tribune, he set out to investigate the resurrection of Jesus. His confident disbelief was turned on its head. His findings? Faith. Decades later, Strobel continues his investigations as he builds
The Case for Miracles and asks: Do miracles still happen today? From awe-inspiring wonders to God’s silence in times of suffering, this documentary takes audiences on a remarkable journey. Through stories of people who claim to have experienced the impossible, and experts who cross-examine the evidence, the film challenges skeptics, inspires seekers, and shows that the search for answers can transform us. Follow Lee Strobel and director Mani Sandoval on a cinematic journey into the miraculous.
