I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

More Theater Monday - & The Players

We were given complimentary tickets to & The Players for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: & The Players

Where:Feinsteins/54 Below
            254 W. 54 St.
            New York, NY

When: This event took place on Sunday, July 23, 2023

Me - & The Players was a concert by the ensemble members from the Broadway show, & Juliet. It was a lot of fun. I was very excited to see it because I love & Juliet. It's one of my favorite shows.

It was interesting to learn about the different ensemble members as individuals and not just members of an ensemble.  I liked getting to know them, and I also liked getting to hear them sing other songs than the ones in the show. I enjoyed their song choices. I especially loved when Tiernan Tunicliffe and Daniel J. Maldonado sang Hanging On for a Hero. That was really good. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience.

Mom - Although the ensemble of the Broadway musical, & Juliet's talents are on full display in their brilliant performances  8 times a week at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, it was nice to have an opportunity to see each of them shine in the spotlight. The evening's entertainment ranged from beautiful ballads like Maybe This Time to a playful performance of Holding Out for a Hero. The latter was one of two duets. There was even a little dancing.

The event was hosted by Melanie LaBarrie who plays Angelique (Juliet's nurse) in the show. The love she feels for her younger castmates clearly shined through as she shared brief intimate tidbits about each of them. Their love for her was quite apparent as well. It is so nice when show casts gel so much that they really get to be like family.

It was great to get to know a little more about the ensemble members of & Juliet during this lovely evening of music and fun. We can't wait to see them again in their regular gig.

And that's our view. For more about upcoming shows at 54 Below or to purchase tickets, visit 54below.org

Co-Conceived by Ahrens, Flaherty, and Eric Idle and based on the Works of Dr. Seuss, Seussical™ is a journey through the stories of Dr. Seuss featuring the plots form Horton Hears a Who, The Cat in the Hat, and Horton Hatches the Egg. Audiences can expect to see well-known characters like Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie and Jojo – the smallest Who of all.

The Cat in the Hat serves as the narrator and tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. 6) Emerson Resort & Spa's
World's Largest Kaleidoscope
Debuts a New "Kaleidoshow,"
The Earth Laughs in Flowers

The World’s Largest Kaleidoscope is located at the Emerson Resort & Spa in the Catskill Mountains which recently celebrated their 27th year and is debuting a brand new “kaleidoshow”, The Earth Laughs in Flowers, just in time for summer 2023.

The Earth Laughs in Flowers is a homage to the Emerson Resort & Spa’s namesake, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and his 1836 essay Nature. The essay, which was inspired by the serene beauty of the Catskills, prompted the American Conservation Movement, and led to the establishment of the 600-square-mile Catskill Forest Preserve that surrounds the Emerson Resort & Spa.

Created entirely in-house, the family-friendly “kaleidoshow” is free for guests under 12 years old and boasts nearly 500 photo and video images of flora, fauna, architecture, and panoramic Catskill vistas. The music that plays behind the colorful show was also composed, performed, and recorded by staff. Since the grand opening in 1996, this is only the second new “kaleidoshow” to be introduced.

Originating in the 1800’s, the grain silo that holds the Kaleidoscope was once part of a family farm that sat on the land now home to the Emerson Resort & Spa. More than a century later, Emerson co-founders Emily H. Fisher and Dean Gitter purchased the farmlands and decided to build a tourist destination to help boost the economy and provide a source of jobs for the area. From there, construction began on the 65-foot high, 18-foot-wide silo that includes specially designed seating, allowing 30 viewers at a time to view the show. The Kaleidoscope features an intricate 37.5 foot tall, three mirror system, weighs two-and-a-half tons, and can reflect over 254 images at a time, creating an illusion of more than 3,000 images on a 50-foot virtual sphere.

Guinness World Records certified the Kaleidoscope as “The World’s Largest Kaleidoscope” in 1997, and to this day, the resort property highlights the spectacle in many ways. Nestled in the Catskills and about a two-hour drive from NYC, the Emerson is closeby breathtaking hiking and biking trails, ski slopes, and much more that inspire their nature-based “kaleidoshows”. The resort itself features 53 rooms and suites, a signature restaurant Woodnotes Grille, dog-friendly amenities, a Spa, and the Emerson Shops. The Kaleidostore, located in the shops, is one of the few brick-and-mortar shops left in the country specifically dedicated to the sale of kaleidoscopes, including many unique and one-of-a-kind scopes.

8) George Street Playhouse Announces Its 50th Season

George Street Playhouse has announced its 2023-24 productions. This golden anniversary year will mark the 50th season for the award-winning theater company, with performances at The New Brunswick Performing Arts Center in New Brunswick, NJ. The season will include five productions, with three world premieres. Subscriptions are on sale now.

The season kicks off on September 26, 2023 with The Pianist, brilliantly adapted for the stage by acclaimed playwright and director Emily Mann. Based on the book of the same name by Wladyslaw Szpilman, The Pianist is Szpilman’s harrowing account of the annihilation of Jewish life in Warsaw during World War II and his remarkable survival through the transcendent power of music.

His memoir inspired an Oscar-winning film – and now Mann has crafted an innovative, immersive play with music that delivers this terrifying and triumphant tale with soul-shaking power and thrilling theatrical immediacy. The play runs through October 22, 2023.

In another work by Mann, Having Our Say is an enthralling full-length play based on the bestselling book by Sarah (Sadie) Delany and Elizabeth (Bessie) Delany. This powerful production revolves around the remarkable lives of the African American Delany sisters, who both surpass the age of 100. Their extraordinary journey unfolds as they share their personal experiences, which include growing up as the daughters of a former slave who became a respected professor, establishing successful careers, and integrating a New York suburb. The
play is directed by Laiona Michelle (Little Girl Blue, The Nina Simone Musical).

During its celebrated run on Broadway, Having Our Say captivated audiences and received a Tony Award nomination for Best Play. Through this powerful adaptation of the Delany sisters' book, audiences are invited to witness a compelling tale that transcends race and gender, offering a profound reflection on American history as seen through the eyes of two unforgettable women. Having Our Say runs from November 28, 2023 through December 17, 2023.

The season continues with the world premiere of Ibsen's Ghost, written by Charles Busch and directed by Carl Andress.

Based on a few irrefutable facts, Ibsen's Ghost tells a tall (and hilarious) tale of the legendary Norwegian playwright's wife, Suzannah, the week after the great man’s state funeral. A fierce keeper of the flame, Suzannah is confronted with a series of predicaments: her husband’s long-lost illegitimate son, his former protegee peddling a libelous diary, and an enigmatic rodent exterminator known as the Rat Wife. This is the play Ibsen never wrote but with more laughs
and a happy ending.

In an all-new piece written for the stage by #1 New York Times bestselling novelist Chris Bohjalian (“The Flight Attendant,” “Hour of the Witch”), The Club will have its premiere engagement at George Street Playhouse from February 27, 2024 through March 17, 2024. It will be directed by longtime GSP Artistic Director David Saint, who marked his 25th year with the theater this past season.

In The Club, three married couples collide in a suburban living room one autumn Sunday – what they think is a refuge from the rock ’n’ roll turbulence outside their neighborhood – only to discover there’s no escape from the era’s cultural upheaval.

The play is rich with biting wit and startling twists as it explores racism, marriage, and the lies we tell ourselves daily. And though the play is set in 1968, it’s eerily timely.

The final production will be the musical, Tick, Tick ... Boom. Tick, Tick...Boom, is the captivating musical masterpiece by the late, great Jonathan Larson (RENT). Set in the bustling streets of New York City, this electrifying production ignites the stage with raw emotion and unyielding passion.

Follow the journey of Jon, a struggling composer on the brink of turning 30, as he wrestles with the haunting pressures of artistic ambition and the relentless ticking of time.

With an energetic and eclectic score that seamlessly blends rock, pop, and musical theater, Tick, Tick...Boom pulses with vibrant melodies and poignant lyrics. It's a celebration of the human spirit, a battle cry for anyone who has ever dared to chase their dreams, and a heartfelt tribute to Larson's own artistic journey. Tick, Tick ... Boom runs from April 23, 2024 through May 19, 2024

10) STAGE COMBAT: A Mental Health Story

Empowering actors to navigate the demanding nature of theater with resilience and confidence.

HAYWOOD PRODUCTION, LLC

Proudly presents a new podcast

STAGE COMBAT:

A Mental Health Story

Featuring and Directed by Sean Hayden

Haywood Productions, LLC is pleased to announce the second season of the groundbreaking podcast series about a leading actor who experiences a mental health crisis at one of the most powerful theatres in the country: The Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Connecticut. Telling his own story, Sean Hayden directs the “riveting series” according to On Stage Blog, and Boy Culture confirms it is “a compelling story”. Listen to Season One now on Apple Podcasts and explosive new episodes when Season II begins July 25, 2023.

In 2019, Sean Hayden thought he had booked the role of his dreams at the prestigious Goodspeed in its production of "Billy Elliot, The Musical." As he drove over the Connecticut River and laid his eyes on the fairy tale Opera House for the first time, Sean had no idea what would be looming behind its doors. "Stage Combat: A Mental Health Story" takes the listener into the insular world of the theatre industry in which the unspoken rule is, “You are not supposed to speak up. Or there will be consequences.” If you thought all the drama happens on stage, wait until you hear what happens after the curtain closes in this immersive listening experience. In a unique format, each episode is followed by a short “post-show talk back” with Sean and a mental health professional. Together they unpack the issues presented in the episode in provocative conversations about mental health and the theatre industry.

Season One of Stage Combat: A Mental Health Story showed the listener, moment by moment, how a mental health crisis happened at the Goodspeed Opera House.  In Season Two, the listener will experience the fallout from that mental health crisis in an epic eleven-episode arc of Sean Hayden’s mental health journey.

With the Stage Combat: A Mental Health Story Podcast, Sean aims to underscore the importance of raising awareness and providing support for the mental well-being of actors and theater staff. By fostering a culture of compassion, understanding, and accessible resources, we can empower actors to navigate the demanding nature of theater with resilience and confidence.

Listen to Season One now on Apple Podcasts. Season II began on July 25, 2023. NEW EPISODES DROP ON TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS!
