5) Act Out, Diva!

ACT OUT, DIVA! New Play Festival featuring five (5) new plays presented as readings on July 17 thru July 20.

About the Plays

Thursday, June 17 - Sensation written by Matthew Yee; directed by Bailey Dumlao

Sensation follows a group of eclectic drag queens as they prepare for the most important (and fabulous) gig of their careers: the Pride Kickoff. Tensions flare and sequins fly as their club’s imminent closure (and shade from one of their own) forces the queens to take an unconventional approach: helping an inexperienced baby queen lip sync for her life. A comedy about the power of a chosen family.

Friday, June 18 - Board of Ed written by Richard Spitaletta; directed by Bailey Dumlao

Connor and Dana, two depressed millennials, run for board of education in Woodmont, New Jersey against a small town super villain named Claudia Roberts. With just two weeks until election day, these two take on the most powerful woman in Bergen County, her chief of staff with psychic powers, an explosive bagel shop owner/devoted member of Qanon and more, all while reckoning with everything they've lost and the emptiness of life in the 2020s. Which Way to the Stage by Ana Nogueira meets POTUS by Selina Fillinger in this wacky, heartfelt comedy about two people trying to find their place in a messed up world.

Saturday, June 19 - The Way You Made Me written by Lindsay Partain; directed by Bailey Dumlao

Through love letters and memories, Imogen shares her gift of words with an unseen lover, sharing with them her journey of finding home, herself, and family, despite a life of neglect. A love story told by someone deemed "unloveable.”

Saturday, June 19 - Strike/Out written by Lizz Mangan; directed by Bailey Dumlao

Tuesdays are, for the Strike Sisters, a day for bowling, beer, and bickering. When tragedy strikes for a fellow team member, the remaining players are faced with the harsh realization that the place they go to for escaping their outside world problems may be becoming a problem in and of itself.

Sunday, June 20 - [the inner universe] written by Sam Heyman; directed by Bailey Dumlao

From a young age, Jackson Pomona was gifted with language. He was curious, inventive, and hungry for knowledge. This was not lost on his literary theory professor mother, Dr. Cheryl Kendall, who encouraged his gifts, and cultivated his growth as a scholar. Together, mother and son, they developed writings surrounding a theory that stood to change everything about the way the world saw their connections to others, their souls, themselves... but one day, that partnership tragically came to an end.

Years later, Jackson has entered college, and like many of his classmates, he is searching for answers to big questions. He is wary of what may lie beyond the boundaries his father has set for him, and also deathly curious. Can Jackson find the answers he seeks without succumbing to the dangers of his own mind?

About the Festival

Tickets for any of the readings are $20 and can be purchased on Sickening Events.

There is an option to subscribe for $85 and see all five (5) plays.

After Glorious Opening at The Cutting Room
Due to Rising Summer Temperatures

The producers of Mozart’s Don Giovanni: A Rock Opera, which opened to glowing reviews at NYC’s iconic Cutting Room, announced that the production will take a brief hiatus as New York’s summer heat intensifies. While the venue has been a wonderful partner and home for our launch, current temperature control limitations have made it necessary to pause performances in the interest of safety and comfort for our cast, crew, and audiences.

With a robust 10-person orchestra, the reimagined rock opera, adapted and directed by Adam B. Levowitz, was scheduled to run through August 26 but will conclude its initial engagement early, with final performances this week. 18) Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company Brings

Lion in the City to New Victory Dance

July 17, 2025 at The New Victory Theater

The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, the renowned international touring dance company founded by Chinese American choreographer Nai-Ni Chen, and now led by Artistic Director Greta Campo and Executive Director Andy Chiang, announced today that they will showcase Lion in the City at New Victory Dance on July 17 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the festival are on sale now.

Lion in the City is a dance by choreographer PeiJu Chien-Pott and Hip-Hop dance legends Kwikstep and Rokafella. It features music, including traditional drumming by Henry Lee, composed by DJ Kwikstep. This piece was first created to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop and to memorialize the pioneering spirit of Nai-Ni Chen, who began working with Rokafella and Kwikstep in 2017. It combines her contemporary Chinese movement style with hip-hop dance styles.

Lion the City is based on the traditional Chinese Lion Dance, which is the most popular dance performed in Chinese New Year celebrations. The Lion Dance is a prayer for peace on earth as a child is able to play with a ferocious beast in harmony. Typically, it is performed in a public square. It will be performed alongside pieces from Elizabeth Burke, Luke Hickey, Ronald K. Brown, and EVIDENCE, A Dance Company in Program A of the festival.

New Victory Dance is the annual mini-festival of NYC dance curated specifically for kids. 20) Teatro Grattacielo 2025 Season

Teatro Grattacielo is proud to unveil its 31st Season, marking a significant expansion with the addition of a third production and an enhanced "Creative Tableaux" educational and community outreach program.

Tribute to Naples: Songs of Eternal Passion

July 15, 2025 at Columbus Citizens Foundation

https://grattacielo.org/season/tribute-to-napoli-songs-of-eternal-passion

This special concert, created by Enzo Pizzimenti, celebrates the enduring legacy of Neapolitan song, a tradition that has resonated with audiences across generations and continents, and served as a cultural anchor for Italian immigrants in America. From the sunlit streets of Naples to the bustling enclaves of New York City’s Little Italies, these songs carried more than melody—they carried memory. For early Italian immigrants, Neapolitan songs were not only expressions of love, longing, and identity, but also vital links to home, shared proudly in backyards, street corners, and community halls. They shaped the emotional landscape of the immigrant experience and remain deeply woven into the fabric of American musical history.

Generación Perdida

July 18, 2025 at the Downstairs Theater, La MaMa

https://grattacielo.org/season/world-premiere-generacion-perdida

Teatro Grattacielo is proud to present the world premiere of Generación Perdida, a monodrama-opera composed by Mexican composer Jorge Sosa, based on the book by Mexican-Colombian poet Javier Moro Hernandez (Ediciones Periféricas). The piece explores the humanitarian crisis affecting Mexico and Latin America, where kidnapping and forced disappearances have profoundly impacted countless communities over the past decade. It reflects on the complex realities of violence in the region and the broader social and political forces at play.

Rather than depicting violence directly, Generación Perdida seeks to create space for reflection and dialogue through the expressive power of poetry and music. By juxtaposing art and beauty against the weight of these themes, the piece invites audiences to engage in conversation about memory, resilience, and the pursuit of peace.

L’Amico Fritz

July 19-20, 2025 at the Downstairs Theater, La MaMa

https://grattacielo.org/season/lamico-fritz

Teatro Grattacielo brings back Pietro Mascagni's charming verismo opera, L'Amico Fritz. This revival aims to introduce a wider audience to the rarely performed masterpiece, last presented by the company in 2021 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The opera will be directed by Anna Laura Miszerak.

Le Nozze di Figaro

July 25-27, 2025 at the Downstairs Theater, La MaMa

https://grattacielo.org/season/le-nozze-di-figaro

The season concludes with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, showcasing emerging international talent in three performances. Conducted by Mexican pianist and conductor Abdiel Vázquez, with direction by Teatro Grattacielo's Artistic Director, Stefanos Koroneos, this production promises a dynamic and fresh interpretation of the classic opera.

Creative Tableaux

https://grattacielo.org/season/creative-tableaux

Teatro Grattacielo’s “Creative Tableaux” represents a pioneering and immersive approach to opera education, encompassing multiple art forms to foster creativity, collaboration, and appreciation for opera. Through the program, TG aims to instill a lifelong love for the arts in the hearts of young students and community members, empowering them to become the next generation of opera enthusiasts, performers, and supporters.

The program offers a unique collaboration of opera, visual arts and working-based learning internships to create an engaging and exciting educational experience for everyone. Through “Creative Tableaux,” participants are immersed in the world of opera, learning about the art form as well as collaborating with professional opera creatives and visual art experts to create their own projects.
