I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

1) Roebling

In 1869, John Roebling wins the contract to design and build the Brooklyn Bridge, the longest and tallest bridge in the world at the time. The construction spanned 14 years, involving 600 workers and at least two dozen people died in the process, including John Roebling. Roebling’s daughter-in-law, Emily, takes a stand ensuring that the Roebling name will forever be attached to this beloved historic landmark.

In New York

2) Arms and the Man

Arms and the Man by Bernard Shaw is one of Shaw’s most enduringly popular comedies. The plot follows a hunted soldier who, seeking refuge in a young lady’s boudoir, starts in motion a series of highly engaging and unlikely comedic events. His unusual philosophies about love, war and life in general open up a world of thought she’d never previously entertained--certainly not with her dashing war-hero fiancée who also arrives unexpectedly. This early work of Shaw’s is remarkably pithy.

3) Artificial Flavors

In a novel collaboration between humans and AI, Artificial Flavors turns the hot topic of artificial intelligence into a theater experience like nothing else. Knowing that the stories we tell ourselves shape and influence what happens in society, what will happen when many of those stories are computer generated? Hosted by The Civilians’ Artistic Director Steve Cosson, parts of the show are generated live by the latest AI programs and immediately performed, creating an entirely different show every night.

4) Harmony

Based on an unbelievable true story, Harmony tells the tale of the most successful entertainers you've never heard of. . . until now. In the 1920s and 30s, The Comedian Harmonists sold millions of records, made dozens of films, and sold-out the biggest theaters around the world.  Their heavenly harmonies and musical comedy antics catapulted these six talented young men from singing in the subway tunnels of Berlin to international superstardom.

Begins performances 10/18

5) Of the Dream That Was My Life...

OF THE DREAM THAT WAS MY LIFE... tells the story of French sculptor Camille Claudel, muse and mistress of Auguste Rodin. Considered audacious in her time, Camille was ridiculed by her peers because she aspired to achieve recognition and stature among the great artists of Paris, a community overwhelmingly dominated by men in the late 1800s. Unwilling to recognize boundaries both personally and professionally, she was imprisoned in an insane asylum where she spent the last 30 years of her life.

American Theatre of Actors (314 W. 54th St.)
10/21 - 10/28

6) Translations

The play takes place in late August 1833 at a hedge-school in the townland of Baile Beag - an Irish speaking community in County Donegal. Strangers have arrived in town in the form of a detachment of Royal Engineers engaged on behalf of the British Army and Government to “standardize” the Gaelic name places by translating them into English. There is friction in the community and there is also love and romance between the native and the strangers. Translations illuminates the significance of language at scales both large and small and questions the meaning of cultural expression and identity in an Ireland under British rule.

Irish Repertory Theatre  (132  W. 22nd St.)
10/20 - 12/3
Opening Night 10/29

Exuberant and outrageous, Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch is the joyous comedy that finds inspiration and laughs in the story of a man with a mission.  Alive with love and hope, this timeless story by American Playwright laureate Ossie Davis is directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun, Fences, Topdog/Underdog).

ALL ORCHESTRA SEATS $75

ALL MEZZANINE SEATS $45

FINAL 6 WEEKS TO SEE THE STRICTLY LIMITED ENGAGEMENT

MUST CLOSE SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19

Celebrate “Sharktober” with $75 orchestra tickets and $45 mezzanine tickets to see the laugh-out-loud comedy that has been making a splash on Broadway.  This pricing feeding frenzy for the critically acclaimed comedy is good through Wednesday, November 1st.  THE SHARK IS BROKEN, playing at the Golden Theatre (252 West 45th Street), stars Alex Brightman as Richard DreyfussColin Donnell as Roy Scheider, and Ian Shaw portraying his father Robert Shaw, who played “Quint” in JAWS.   The strictly limited engagement of THE SHARK IS BROKEN must end Sunday, November 19, 2023.  Co-written by Ian Shaw and Joseph NixonTHE SHARK IS BROKEN is the Olivier Award-nominated comedy that imagines what happened on board “The Orca” when the cameras stopped rolling during the filming of Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster, JAWS

Tickets for THE SHARK IS BROKEN are available at Telecharge.com (212.239.6200) and at the John Golden Theatre box office (252 West 45th Street).  Tickets for performances through November 1 range from $45 - $135 (including $2 facility fee).  This special pricing for the month of October excludes premium tickets.  The playing schedule for THE SHARK IS BROKEN is as follows: Tuesday – Friday at 7pm, Saturday at 8pm, with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday at 2pm, and Sunday at 3pm.

FADE IN: The open ocean, 1974. Filming on JAWS is delayed…again. The film’s lead actors—theatre veteran Robert Shaw and young Hollywood hotshots, Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider—are crammed into a too-small boat, entirely at the mercy of foul weather and a faulty mechanical co-star. Alcohol flows, egos collide, and tempers flare on a chaotic voyage that just might lead to cinematic magic…if it doesn’t sink them all.

17) Theater Resources Unlimited

Live and on Zoom,

Career Roadblocks: Gender Disparity and Ageism

Thursday, October 19, 2023

Networking at 6:30pm ET,

Open Forum at 7:00pm ET

Polaris North Studio, 245 W. 29th Street,

4th Floor, NYC

A return to live monthly panels/discussions,

with a simultaneous streaming for our friends outside of New York City.

Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) announces Career Roadblocks: Gender Disparity and Ageism, a live townhall. Co-hosted by Jacquelyn Bell Kearney, 2020 Special Tony Awarded founder of Broadway Advocacy Coalition and an Associate at the Nederlander Organization, writer Rose-Marie Brandwein, president of the board of Polaris North Studio, writer/activist Cindy Cooper, co-initiator of Honor Roll!/The Profiles Project, actress Emma Davidov, founder of The Aurelians Collective, writer Nico Juber (Millennials are Killing Musicals) and director Ludovica Villar-Hauser, founder, artistic and executive director of Parity Productions. The town hall will be moderated by Cheryl L. Davis, VP of TRU and general counsel for The Authors Guild, and TRU executive director Bob Ost.

TRU monthly conversations continue about issues of current cultural significance. They expand their conversation about the ongoing uphill battle for gender equality and add in the inequities of ageism. These fights have been part of our political fabric for generations and continue to influence and impact the arts and specifically, for us, theater. We will look at the ongoing struggle for equal pay, equal opportunities and equal rights, the resistance to women being accepted in positions of power and thought leadership, the cultural trap of double standards and implicit bias, the undervaluing of experience in the workplace and more. Our guest "co-hosts" span several generations in an effort to consider whether the perception of these issues differs from generation to generation, and to examine ways in which they can help and influence each other. Attendees are encouraged to talk about their own experiences with discrimination. TRU offers this as an opportunity for everyone to learn from actual experiences and find ways to support each other while exploring initiatives that might bring us closer to genuine respect and acceptance.

Doors open at 6:30pm for networking and roundtable introductions of everyone in the room – come prepared with your best 20-second summary of who you are, and what you need. The Open Forum will start at 7:00pm. Free for members of TRU, Polaris North and Parity Productions; $15 for non-members with a $5Starving Artist ticket available for all. To register, visit https://truonline.org/events/town-hall-gender-disparity-ageism/
