Swan Lake the Opera is a musical loosely based on the famous ballet of the same name. In this version, the prince is looking for a bride and the swans are hired dancing girls who dress up like swans. If you are not a fan of opera, don't let the word opera in the title fool you. It's a lot more like a Broadway-style musical with both singing and spoken dialogue than an opera. In fact, there is actually more spoken dialogue in this show than in some shows that are not billed as operas like many of Andrew Lloyd Webber's shows and Miss Saigon, for example.
The plot although not exactly like the ballet is pretty basic and not very original. The show is definitely not as dark as the ballet so those who are a fan of more upbeat stories may enjoy it better. You will get to hear a lot of the music from the ballet as background music. The original songs in the show are not very memorable, however. All in all, the show is entertaining, but there just isn't anything special about it.
And that's our view.
Tune in Sunday for this week's Sunday Scoop.
