If you are unable to get to New York or one of the stops on the National tour and see the Tony-winning musical, Hadestown, or even if you just want to see a different version of the story, you might want to try Myth: The Rise & Fall of Orpheus. This version written and composed by Sam Cassidy and originally called 27 is a much more modern version of the story. As the title suggests, the story is much more Orpheus' story and less Eurydice's and she is much more of a secondary character.
In this version, Orpheus is a rock star in a band called the Argonauts. Accordingly, the score is much more modern and rock-infused although not necessarily more memorable. The standout number is a song called Blackjack Girl, the reprise of which has some really nice harmonies. The plot deals with much more modern and timely issues as well including the price of fame, drug addiction, and mental health. The ending is different too, but whether it is happier or not is debatable.
And that's our view. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a website where you can go to find out more about the show, but if you want to watch, go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJHafQr6Cxs.
Tune in Sunday for this week's Sunday Scoop.
