Brilliant is a musical about a family with a child on the autism spectrum. When his behavior becomes increasingly difficult to manage, they have to make some difficult decisions. This is an extremely touching musical. It is deeply relatable not only for anyone who has ever had a child on the autism spectrum but for anyone who has ever had to face a difficult situation with a loved one and/or make a difficult decision on their behalf.
The show is full of heartfelt songs. Although they are not necessarily catchy and memorable, they pack a powerful emotional punch. Even a fun simple song about vices has a lot more meaning behind it than it may seem on the surface.
The end of the show kind of leaves you hanging and wanting to know more. Yet, if everything was all tied up nicely and neatly that wouldn't be very true to life. As the final song of the musical tells us, sometimes all you can do is take it "take it day by day." That is good advice for all of us.
