I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Cynthia Starts A Band & Fabulous Female Firsts & Movies: Mothers of the Revolution

We may have been given complimentary copies of one or more of any books and/or other products mentioned below and/or early access to any audio or visual media for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: Cynthia Starts a Band and Fabulous Female Firsts

Today we are recommending Cynthia Starts a Band by Olivia Swindler. As a member of the popular band, Kittanning, Eleanor has a seemingly great life that most people would envy. Then, her band's manager, James and her bandmate Art push her into a fake relationship with Art to try to stir up publicity for the band, but even though the relationship is allegedly fake, the two men just don't want to let it go. They keep the whole world thinking Art and Eleanor are a pair even though in reality they can't stand each other. Finally, Eleanor is left with no choice but to give up everything she loves and run away and try to start a new life with a new identity.

This very timely book shows that abuse can come in many different forms. Just because things may seem perfect from the outside does not mean that is the way they really are. Eleanor is  a very admirable character in the way, that she steps up and takes charge of her own life and doesn't wait for someone else to do it for her. In fact, the book is all about not only women's empowerment and woman taking charge of their own life's but it is about female bonding as well. All of the women in this book stand up for each other. It may takes some a little longer than others but eventually they all do. More women in life need to be like the women in this book and build each other up and help each other, instead of trying to tear each other down all the time. Reading this book, makes you want to be a better woman.

However, the woman in the book are not the only ones who are admirable characters. The character of Gabe is a  really great too. He is so sweetly supportive of Eleanor. He is the antitheisisof the evil controlling Art. He is just what Eleanor needs, and you can't help but root for them to be together.  All in all, this book is  a delightful debut from an author who will hopefully bring us a lot more great reads in the future.

Today we are recommending Fabulous Female Firsts by Marlene Wagman-Geller.This is another book about females taking charge of their destiny. It is about woman who did what they said could not be done or at least could not be done by a woman. There are chapters on well-known woman like Sandra Day O'Connor, the first female Justice of the Supreme Court and Katherine Bigelow, the first and to date only woman to win an Academy Award for Directing. There are  also chapters on woman who may not be as well known, like Christina Sanchez, the first female bullfighter, and Elsie De Wolf, America's first female interior decorator. All of them are wonderful role models, and all of them teach us once again to not let anyone tell us what we can and cannot do. If we set our minds on achieving something and take the necessary step to achieve it, we can. There always has to be someone who is the first of something and that can be anybody who is in the right place at the right time and has the right attitude and the right kind of training, if necessary, for the task ahead. Why shouldn't it be you, or your wife, or your daughter, or your niece or whatever? You will definitely want to share this book with all the woman and girls in your life. It is extremely inspiring.

Movies: Mothers of the Revolution

Today we are talking about Mothers of the Revolution. This documentary fits right in with the two books we have previously discussed this week. It is about woman banding together and using their power to bring about change. In 1981, fearing for their children's futures a group of woman marched from Wales to Berkshire to protest nuclear weapon which were to be held at RAF Greenham Common. Afterwards they built a camp at the site and for 19 years kept up the pressure and the protests. Eventually, their actions were instrumental in not only leading to the closing of the base but also helping to bring about the eventual nuclear summit between President Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, although no arms reduction agreement was ever reached between them. The protest was the forerunner of numerous peaceful protests that have been held since on topics ranging from Global Warming to the Me Too Movement, to Black Lives Matter, to Gun Control and beyond.

This film is available today on digital platforms.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.
