5) The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine Announces Lineup of Dynamic Spring and Summer Programming
Highlights of special events and programming from May to August include:
- Final Months to See Divine Pathways (Until June 30) – Don’t miss the chance to see the vibrant and entrancing textile installation Divine Pathways, on display in the vaulted Nave of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine only until the end of June. The installation was created by artist Anne Patterson together with communities and organizations from across the Morningside Heights neighborhood, New York City, and the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Each 75-foot ribbon that makes up the piece contains a handwritten hope, dream, or prayer from a community member, all coming together to create an intimate and immense experience.
- New York Philharmonic FREE Memorial Day Concert (Monday, May 27) – In honor of those who have fallen, the New York Philharmonic will perform their 31st annual Memorial Day Concert, presented as a gift to the people of New York City and a day of musical remembrance. Conducted by Music Director Jaap van Zweden, the program includes Wagner’s Prelude to Act I of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Copland’s Quiet City and Brahms’ Symphony No. 4. The concert is from 7pm to 8pm. Admission is free. Tickets are required and will be distributed at The Cathedral beginning at 5pm the evening of the concert; doors will open at 6pm. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Iconic Pride Returns for June 2024 (Friday, May 31 & June) – The Cathedral will once again celebrate Pride Month and show their support for the LGBTQIA+ community with a diverse range of events and activities throughout June. This year’s theme is Pathways of Pride inspired by Anne Patterson’s Divine Pathways installation. Festivities begin with a Pride Eve kick off on May 31 at 7pm, featuring crafts, cocktail hour, a special performance by the artist Greedy Peasant, and the turning on of the Pride Lights inside the Cathedral. - The Public Theater Mobile Unit’s The Comedy of Errors FREE Performance (Sunday, June 16 & June 30) – The Mobile Unit is bringing back its bilingual musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors and for the first time ever, the company will be making two stops at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. The FREE outdoor performance, performed in English and Spanish, will take place on June 16 and June 30 at 6:30pm on the Pulpit Green. Chair seating will be available but is determined on a first-come, first-served basis and is not guaranteed.
- Diocesan Celebration of Women’s Ordinations (Sunday, June 16 & Monday, July 29) – Join the Cathedral in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the ordinations of the Philadelphia Eleven – the first women in the Episcopal Church to become ordained priests on July 29, 1974, two years before General Convention affirmed and explicitly authorized the ordination of women to the priesthood. On June 16 from 4pm to 5pm, all are welcome to participate in a special Choral Evensong featuring the voices of the Cathedral Choir. On July 29 at 12:15pm, the Cathedral will also host a Holy Eucharist service to commemorate these pioneering women of the Episcopal Church.
- Paul Winter’s 29th Annual Summer Solstice Celebration (Saturday, June 22) – From 4:30am to 6am, join Artist in Residence Paul Winter and the Paul Winter Consort as they welcome the longest day of the year with an ambient musical performance and listening journey. Coinciding with the sunrise, the music will begin in total darkness and proceed in a continuous flow, echoing within the awesome acoustical space of the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world. Gradually, the light of the first dawning of summer joins the sound as the great stained-glass windows begin to illuminate. Tickets for the event start at $45 and can be purchased here.
- Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra Concert (Thursday, August 1) – In association with Lincoln Center, the Cathedral will host the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra for their summer tour at the great cathedrals and concert halls of Europe and the United States. The orchestra was formed in 2022 as a direct response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and a bold initiative to defend the country’s cultural legacy. The ensemble will bring together leading musicians based in Ukraine, alongside musicians forced into exile by the war and Ukrainian members of European orchestras. This summer’s program will feature Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, in honor of the composition’s 200th anniversary, in a unique Ukrainian language version to re-assert the values of freedom, resistance and progress against the forces of oppression. The concert begins at 7pm. Ticket details will be announced.

7) HOT STEEL: The Story of the
58th Armored Field Artillery Battalion’
Baker’s late husband, Vincent E. Baker, was a World War II veteran who landed on Normandy’s Omaha Beach on D-Day (June 6, 1944), the largest invasion ever assembled, before or since. Vincent remained with the 58th Armored Field Artillery Battalion through VE Day (May 8, 1945). Fighting as a forward artillery observer, he was wounded five times, was awarded two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars with the “V” device for valor, the Bronze Arrowhead for D-Day, and five campaign stars. He was field promoted to first lieutenant.
Vincent and Fran Baker attended both the 40th and 50th anniversaries of D-Day in France. In 2014, when Vincent was appointed a Knight in the French Legion of Honor, Fran Baker realized it was time to put the stories she had heard from him and his fellow soldiers as well as the information she’d gathered from after action reports, diaries and transit notebooks into an eBook to preserve the remarkable story of the 58th.
HOT STEEL: The Story of the 58th Armored Field Artillery Battalion follows the 58th from activation in the United States through Operation Torch in North Africa, Operation Husky in Sicily, and, after several rigorous training missions in England, from D-Day through VE Day. It doesn’t glamorize the war, but neither does it repel the reader with gory details. The book is an account of the adventures, misadventures, triumphs, and tragedies of a group of young men – a band of brothers, if you will – who answered their country’s call before getting on with the rest of their lives.

The 19th annual Shubert Foundation/Music Theatre International Broadway Junior® Student Finale will take place on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 11:15 a.m. at Broadway’s Ambassador Theatre (219 West 49th Street). Co-hosting the event this year are Apollo Levine (MJ The Musical) and Samantha Pauly (The Great Gatsby). The Shubert Foundation / MTI Broadway Junior® partnership is a groundbreaking musical theatre mentorship program that helps public schools affect school culture change through building sustainable theatre education programs. Lenora Lee Dance, celebrates its 15th Anniversary with a collaboration with South Street Seaport Museum, presenting the World Premiere of Convergent Waves: NYC. Come aboard Wavertree, where dance performances will unfold against the backdrop of this historic vessel. Audiences will be brought back in time as they journey throughout the rooms and decks of the three-story vessel experiencing intimate and engaging moments with performers in immersive environments transformed by video projection, recorded original music, and text.

G.A.B. Musical Number
Suffs, the new Broadway musical now in performances at the Music Box Theatre, is thrilled to share its first official onstage clip of the musical number “G.A.B.”, which stands for Great American Bitch. See the video for “G.A.B.” here: https://youtu.be/
This number finds the Suffs raising a toast to the success of the 1913 Women’s Suffrage Procession (“The March”) and celebrating the impact it has had on the greater movement for women’s rights. After suffragist Doris Stevens shares that she had been called a “bitch” by a heckler during the march, the Suffs bond over their own experiences of being assertive as women only to be labeled a bitch as a result.
The song is performed by Tony Award nominee Shaina Taub in the role of Alice Paul, Kim Blanck as Ruza Wenclawska, Ally Bonino as Lucy Burns, Nadia Dandashi as Doris Stevens, and Hannah Cruz as Inez Milholland.

17) “Waves, All That Glows Sees” Will Enchant Families at Flushing Town Hall

On Saturday, May 25, and Sunday, May 26, families with young children can partake in a magical and mesmerizing theatrical experience at Flushing Town Hall. There will be three performances of “Waves, All That Glows Sees” in three different languages, English, Spanish and Mandarin.
Waves, all that Glows Sees, is a beautiful, immersive sea story with live music. To begin, families follow a little pathway of shells and stones into a big tent as they listen to the sound of someone playing the harmonica. Once inside, they encounter a tall man who is dreaming of the sea. As he enchants the audiences with his gentle music, he makes sand, turtles, seagulls, and fish appear, and then dune grass, the sky, and boats, as time passes. The performance is like a charming “postcard,” offering images, music, words, and silence, resembling a poem for someone you love or a holiday on an invented beach.
This one-of-a-kind family experience was created by the Théâtre des Confettis, a Canadian troupe known for audacious choices and a significant contribution to the development of dramatic arts for children and young people.
