Mom's view: Despite the title, Fun Home is not at all a light and happy musical. The title is actually short for funeral home. It is the true story of Alison Bechdel based on her own autobiographical graphic novel. It is the story of her growing up and coming into her own and discovering her own awakening sexuality. It is also the story of her difficult relationship with her eccentric father. The show deals with difficult subject matter including suicide and is not at all suitable for young children. Kelsey Theater's version of the show is is well cast, and they do a nice job with this difficult show. The show is not all dark and heavy. Some of the songs in particular are lighter and happier including a Raincoat of Love, a spoof of The Partridge Family and I'm Changing My Major to Joan, a song about Alison's first love. However, probably the most well known song from the show is Ring of Keys, a tour de force for the actress playing young Alison which was sung on the 2015 Tony Awards by the original young star of the show, Sydney Lucas. The show ultimately won an award for its score as well as four other Tony Awards including Best Musical. Kelsey Theatre does a good job with show, and it is worth seeing if you do enjoy shows that are different and deal with more serious subject matter.
