STARS IN THE NIGHT, an intimate and immersive theatrical adventure exploring multiple locations in the historic waterfront district of DUMBO, Brooklyn. Presented by Firelight Collective and Hillary Ellison, STARS IN THE NIGHT comes to New York directly from a sold-out run in Los Angeles.
Written and directed by Firelight Collective artistic directors Stephanie Feury and Nathan Keyes, STARS IN THE NIGHT unravels across the cobblestone streets, homes, and businesses of DUMBO. Intimate groups of twelve audience members are taken on a journey to witness the fallout when a woman suddenly goes missing, and the ripples of her disappearance illuminate mystifying connections between seeming strangers. An original story performed by nine actors, STARS IN THE NIGHT is staged throughout four locations – from the iconic 19th century warehouse newly-refurbished as Empire Stores, into secret and unexpected environments and intimate living spaces, revealing a deeply powerful and engaging experience. STARS IN THE NIGHT is presented in special partnership with famed Brooklyn distillery Van Brunt Stillhouse, integrating full-sensory experience into this one-of-kind theatrical adventure.

New Jersey State Attorney General Gurbir Grewal to Deliver Keynote Address
George Street Playhouse’s Educational Touring Theatre, courtesy of support from The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey and RWJBarnabas Health, will premiere a new musical about the opioid crisis and its impact on teens and families. This original musical was developed in response to the devastating impact prescription opioid misuse, heroin, and fentanyl have had on communities throughout New Jersey. Anytown will premiere on September 25, 2018 at George Street Playhouse as part of a special Spotlight Conference on Opioid Abuse. The Spotlight Conference will feature a keynote address from New Jersey State Attorney General Gurbir Grewal along with workshops for educators, school administrators, and public health professionals conducted by experts in the field from RWJBarnabas Health’s Institute for Prevention and Recovery.
Anytown explores the story of star athlete Hope Baker who sports a 4.0 GPA and limitless potential.
But when a boy she likes offers her a pill to reduce the pain from a soccer injury, Hope makes a decision that rapidly transforms her dreams into an escalating nightmare. With her future at stake, will Hope be able to confront her opioid abuse and stop feeding the monster that seeks to destroy everything she cares about?
Anytown focuses on the consequences of opioid abuse and its impact on teens and families. Presenting the seriousness of this national crisis as a cautionary tale, this musical empowers students with the knowledge to make positive decisions to avoid opioid use and help them understand the dangerous consequences of substance abuse disorder. Working in partnership with the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey and RWJBarnabas Health, this original musical was created from interviews with opioid prevention experts, families with children struggling with this disease, individuals recovering from opioid abuse, doctors, law enforcement officers, students, and educators. Key research and feedback during the development of this musical was provided by RWJBarnabas Health’s Institute for Prevention and Recovery and Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey.
Specific educational objectives woven into the story include:
- Promoting an understanding of the legal, physiological and social consequences of drug and opioid use
- Prioritizing prevention and safe behavior through personal responsibility and knowledge
- Helping teens understand how opioids make structural and functional changes in the brain that compromise their ability to make positive decisions and consider long-term consequences
- Demonstrating how best to respond in a situation where a frie
George Street Playhouse Touring Theatre
A troupe of four actors and a stage manager (all recent college graduates with degrees in theatre) travel about 7,000 miles each school year in a van filled with costumes, props and sets performing over 150 shows to schools throughout the state of New Jersey. Each performance is followed by a post-play discussion with the students to examine and discuss the themes of the show. Our Touring Theatre actors are trained in conflict resolution and peer mediation techniques which enables them to facilitate these important conversations with our young audiences.
The tour is available from October 1, 2018 through April 6, 2019.
Anytown is targeted to middle and high school students in grades seven through twelve, reaching up to 10,000 students annually. Over the 30 years of GSP’s Educational Touring Theatre, the average run of a commission is five to seven years. The production is expected to reach a total New Jersey audience of 50,000.
In working to produce an engaging musical that effectively educates students about the dangers of opioid abuse, George Street Playhouse has partnered with the RWJBarnabas Health’s Institute for Prevention and Recovery and Partnership for a Drug Free New Jersey, aligning statewide opioid addiction prevention objectives with the story content, post-play discussion protocols, and study guide materials.

at the South Street Seaport Museum

The South Street Seaport Museum announces a two-day public program,Gotham and Gus Wagner, featuring a rare opportunity for participants to receive tattoos inspired by our historic collection of tattoo flash and ephemera. The weekend will consist of an evening lecture on Friday, September 21, at 6:30pm, and a day of live tattooing on Saturday, September 22, 12:00-8:00pm.Both programs will take place at the Museum's Melville Gallery at 213 Water Street, New York, NY 10038 and are organized by Daredevil Tattoo.
The Gotham and Gus Wagner events will highlight the Alan Govenar and Kaleta Doolin Tattoo Collection at the Seaport Museum, as well as the history of tattooing in New York in 1900, compared to today. Both events aim to make the case for the importance of researching, documenting, and preserving tattoo collections in today's museums, institutions, and the tattoo community.
The Seaport Museum's Alan Govenar and Kaleta Doolin Tattoo Collection examines the life and work of Augustus "Gus" Wagner's (American, 1872-1941). Wagner traveled the world as a merchant mariner and tattoo artist from 1898-1902, and then pursued a career as a professional tattoo artist and tattooed man, traveling across the United States, including New York City, between 1903-1941. The collection is the most comprehensive of a single American tattoo artist during the turn of the century.
The lecture will take place on Friday, September 21, 6:30-8:00 pm and will feature presentations by Daredevil Tattoo co-founder, Michelle Myles, and the Seaport Museum's Collections and Curatorial Assistant, Michelle Kennedy. Martina Caruso, the Seaport Museum's Director of Collections, will be moderating. Tickets are $10 for adults, and FREE for South Street Seaport Museum members. Myles will discuss the tattoo culture and scene in New York City and the Bowery around the time Gus Wagner came through, and she will talk about the artists in New York that Wagner had contact with. Kennedy will showcase digital artifacts from the Seaport Museum's tattoo collection that help us discuss the experiences of Gus Wagner as a merchant mariner visiting the tattoo mecca of the Lower East Side and the Bowery in 1900, including a selection of pages from the artist's scrapbook - a 400 page diary book composed of press clippings, postcards, business cards, sketches, and photographs.
On Saturday, September 22, 12:00-8:00pm the public will be offered the rare opportunity to receive a truly historic tattoo based on the nearly century-old collection of tattoo flash of the Seaport Museum's Alan Govenar and Kaleta Doolin Tattoo Collection. Renowned New York City-based tattoo artists from Daredevil Tattoo, 5 Points, Kings Avenue, Three Kings, Red Rocket, Saved, Greenpoint, Fun City and NYHC will be on hand inking designs inspired by Gus Wagner's original artwork.
Tattoos will be first come first serve, and there are a few ground rules for the day to help move things along and keep the day fun for everyone. The doors open up for tattooing at noon on the 22nd and the event will run until closing time at 8:00pm. Limit one tattoo per person, and only the designs on the selected sheets are available. Prices for tattoos range from $50 - $500 and it is a cash only event. Participants must bring valid state ID (driver's license, passport, military ID) with proof of 18+ age, no exceptions. PARK(ing) Day is a annual open-source global event where citizens, artists, and activists collaborate to temporarily transform curbside parking spots into public space. This year Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance, in conjunction with Community Board 7, will take over four curbside parking spaces on Broadway between 100th and 101st Streets. Two spaces will be a stage for "Spot for Dance: A Micro Movement Festival"; one space will be a parklet -- an architecturally designed miniature park with seating; and one space will be a Community Zone where neighbors and passersby can learn about what's happening on the Upper West Side--and have some fun!
"Spot for Dance" will feature performances by Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance and the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble, as well as workshops for adults of all ages and abilities taught by Dances for a Variable Population.
Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance will present a site-adaptation of "Wind Rose" for the company's six women. This new work visualizes local and global winds patterns which are being dramatically altered along with climate change. The work continues choreographer Jody Sperling's collaboration with environmental composer Matthew Burtner. During the process, Sperling created a sequence of movements, each with a specific sound and rhythm. Burtner composed these movements into a fugue structure. The result is an integration of sound, movement, and air-flow, with the dancers creating swelling gusts and subsiding breezes in complex rhythmic patterns. The dancers push the boundaries of Sperling's Loie Fuller-influenced apparatus using it to whip and slap the air and in so doing they sculpt the wind so the audience can feel the dance unfold. "Spot for Dance" also presents excerpts from three works by the great 20th-century choreographer Anna Sokolow (1910-2000). The long-lost Moods (1975), set to music by Gyorgyi Ligeti, is a journey through inner states from serene to violent, from exuberant to crushed, from struggle to acceptance. The Unanswered Question (1971), is a poetic tribute to human yearning set to the music of Charles Ives, a composer whose dark and stringent sensibility was comparable to Sokolow's. In Session for Six (1958), set to the music of Argentinian composer William Catanzaro, the stage comes alive with handshakes, the Twist, Walk The Dog, and the Microwave, and is Sokolow's tribute to the spirit of youth. (Quote: "One remembers, watching the performance, Sokolow's belief that audiences and performers must 'feel' dancing that is 'impelled by truth.'")
Naomi Goldberg Hass/Dancesfor a Variable Population offers two half-hour workshops for adults of all ages and all abilities celebrating strong and creative movement.
Community Board 7 volunteers will provide a Community Zone throughout the afternoon with chalk and bubbles and games for children, along with interactive art and urban design installations. Updates on CB7 meetings and projects will be available, along with information from local elected officials.
PARK(ing) Day is a annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform curbside parking into public space. The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals (operating independently of Rebar but following an established set of guidelines) creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world. The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat. The Boy Who Danced On Air is a modern-day love story set in rural Afghanistan. Paiman and Feda have spent their young lives as dancers in the world of bacha bazi, where wealthy men take in boys from poor families, train them to dance at parties, and often abuse them. The two boys’ chance meeting changes the course of their lives and sets them on a journey to find their independence in this musical fable about love, tradition, morality and the strength of the human spirit.
The Boy Who Danced On Air is written by Tim Rosser (music and orchestrations) and Charlie Sohne (book and lyrics). The Abingdon Theater Company production was directed by Tony Speciale, and music direction by David Gardos. Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director/CEO) and Columbia University School of the Arts (Carol Becker, Dean of Faculty) are pleased to announce the winners of Columbia@Roundabout’s 2018 New Play Reading Series. As part of the collaborative partnership between Roundabout Theatre Company and Columbia University, the reading series awards three playwrights from the current MFA program and recent alumni with a cash prize as well as a reading in Roundabout’s Rehearsal Hall, followed by a post-reading reception.
The New Play Reading Series will be held September 24 – 27 at Roundabout’s Rehearsal Hall. Mentorship is provided by celebrated Columbia faculty members, including Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang, Pulitzer Prize winner and Tony Award nominee Lynn Nottage and Obie Award winner Charles L. Mee. The series creates a bridge for Columbia’s emerging writers and provides Roundabout audience members with an opportunity to experience work by the next generation of leading theatre artists. Readings will be open to industry members and other guests by invitation only.

In the year 1867, following defeat in the Civil War, a small group of men and women from the Southern United States immigrated to Brazil, where they founded a new city known today as Americana. Os Confederados tells the story of that city in two parts: one act in 1867 and one act in 2017. In the first act, the colonists struggle to determine whether their new city will be a recreation of the antebellum South or an experiment in creating a more inclusive society from the ashes of the old. In the second act, set at the city’s 150th anniversary celebration, descendants of the original colonists struggle as well to determine their identity in the context of their history, this time the past of the city itself as well as the past of the Confederate South. Os Confederados is a play about why we hold on to histories of oppression – and how we let go.

Amas Musical Theatre (Donna Trinkoff, Artistic Producer) today announced the inauguration of The Eric H. Weinberger Award for Emerging Librettists, a juried cash and production grant to be given annually to support the early work and career of a deserving musical theatre librettist. It commemorates the life and work of playwright/librettist Eric H. Weinberger (1950-2017), who was a Drama Desk Award nominee for Best Book of a Musical (Wanda’s World), and the playwright/librettist of Class Mothers ’68, which earned Pricilla Lopez a Drama Desk Award nomination.
The winner will receive $2,000 to help pay cost-of-living expenses. The winning musical will receive development assistance in the 2019 New Works Development Program of Amas Musical Theatre, which is administering the Award. The development assistance culminates in the work being rehearsed and performed by New York theatre professionals in an Amas Lab production. Amas was the development home for several of Mr. Weinberger’s musicals, and which produced the World Premiere of Wanda’s Worldand the New York Premiere of Tea for Three.
Submissions will open on September 18, 2018 and will close November 30, 2018. All submissions must be sent through an online application that can be found at Eric H. Weinberger Award For Emerging Librettists. Only one submission per playwright/librettist will be accepted. The winner of the award will be announced late February-early March.

Meet N’Kenge. A powerhouse singer who began her lifelong love of performing at the age of three. At 17, she won the Lena Horne Singing Competition Scholarship, the ASCAP Leiber and Stoller Award and the Leontyne Price Vocal Competition. She has appeared in such disparate roles as Mary Wells in Broadway’s Motown, as a classical chanteuse in 3 Mo’ Divas, and has appeared in over 100 solo concerts throughout the United States. Adding producer to her resume, N’Kenge is spearheading the Off-Broadway musical Dorothy Dandridge: Hollywood’s Sepia Goddess.
