Call for Applicants Begins September Now!
The Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL) has announced the launch of the DeGaetano Composition Institute, with the first edition taking place in July 2019 at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music. Four exceptional emerging composers will be selected through a national call-for-scores to workshop new works for chamber orchestra under the leadership of 2019 mentor and composer Anna Clyne. This new initiative was established through a generous gift from the estate of pianist, composer and teacher Robert DeGaetano, and will occur annually each July.
New York, NY, September 24, 2018 - The Orchestra of St.
Participants will develop their skills by working directly with a professional orchestra, mentor-composer, conductor, and industry professionals. The Institute is tuition-free and provides participants with creative development support in the creation of a new work, an intensive one-week learning experience in New York City, culminating in the world premiere of their works by Orchestra of St. Luke's led by Ben Gernon on Friday, July 19 at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music. Another highlight will be a performance by pianist Jacob Greenberg honoring the late Robert DeGaetano, in which his music will be featured, on Tuesday, July 16 at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music. Both performances will be presented free of charge.
The national call for applicants closes on November 7, 2018. Three panelists will select the finalists, with Anna Clyne and Ben Gernon selecting the four participants from the finalists' pool and the selectees will be announced in mid-January, 2019.
The DeGaetano Composition Institute consists of two key stages. From January to April, each participant will receive personal, one-on-one mentorship from Ms. Clyne as they develop and compose their original chamber orchestra work through three individualized remote-learning sessions. The four composers will travel to New York City for a one-week residency from July 14 - 19, 2019 with a housing and travel stipend provided by Orchestra of St. Luke's.
As part of the New York residency, participants will receive artistic sessions with the celebrated musicians of the Orchestra of St. Luke's; professional development sessions with the staff of the Orchestra of St. Luke's; networking and professional development from industry leaders; coaching in public-speaking; and guidance for funding sources and public relations.
To apply for the July 2019 DeGaetano Composition Institute, composers must be 18 years of age as of December 2018 and a legal resident of the USA. Applicants must submit two sample works composed within the past five years, one work for chamber ensemble, one work for orchestra; two letters of recommendation, each from someone who is familiar with the work of the applicant and can speak to the applicant's compositional work and capacity; and a CV or resume.
Details are available on the Orchestra of St. Luke's website at www.OSLmusic.org.

Call Me Madam
Feb 6 – 10, 2019
For the second time in Encores! history, we’re reviving one of our own revivals. Call Me Madamwas the highlight of the second season of Encores! and was the show that put the series on the map. With a memorable score by Irving Berlin and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, Call Me Madam centers around a brassy ambassador to the fictional European nation of Lichtenberg and features standards including “It’s a Lovely Day Today,” along with Berlin’s most famous counterpoint duet, “You’re Just in Love.”

Rodgers and Hart's I Married an Angel
Mar 20 – 24, 2019
The originality of Rodgers and Hart’s third major collaboration with choreographer George Balanchine consists of blending a drawing room comedy with serious and extended dance sequences. Balanchine cast his then wife as the Angel and created a series of spectacular dances to show her off. In a happy bit of symmetry, our production will be directed and choreographed by Joshua Bergasse for his soon-to-be wife, New York City Ballet star Sara Mearns.

High Button Shoes
May 8 – 12, 2019
The season will end with a springtime romp, the rarely seen High Button Shoes. This musical contains, among other treasures, Jerome Robbins’ Mack Sennett-style ballet, set to the Jule Styne-Sammy Cahn song “On a Sunday by the Sea,” which created ten minutes of complete mayhem that included bathing beauties, Keystone Kops, mustachioed crooks, and, for no particular reason anyone could determine, a dancing gorilla. All this and more—yes, even the Rutgers football team—feature in this adventure of a traveling con-man caught up in rural, small town New Jersey.

A trio of performers on cello, voice, and percussion act as gentle guides through a brand-new world of wonder, delight, and opportunities for connection through sound, touch, and performance. Rain is designed for infants and babies who are not yet walking. For safety reasons, babies who can walk will not be permitted into the theater.

“By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.” Andy Cannon is one of Scotland’s finest storytellers for children. With a few simple props, he takes on multiple roles to recount Shakespeare’s Scottish Play in this riveting one-man show. Using contemporary language and easy-going humor that tempers the play’s more gruesome events, Cannon takes audience members young and old on a thousand-year journey from fact to fiction and back again. It is “a tale of sound and fury, signifying first-class theatre for everyone” (Herald, U.K.)

In their characteristic style that is both reverent of the original and imaginative with its interpretation for contemporary young audiences, the celebrated Classical Theatre of Harlem delves into Sophocles' famous tragedy. When the young woman Antigone arrives in Thebes to discover that her brothers have been killed in battle, she is enraged that her uncle Creon—the city’s ruler—is refusing proper burial rights to one of them. Caught defying the king, she is imprisoned, leading to an uprising of the people. Carl Cofield directs this timeless play whose themes of power, loyalty, tyranny, justice, and the position of women in society continue to resonate strongly today.

LABA: A Laboratory for Jewish Culture
at the 14th Street Y
Announces 2018-2019 Fellows
LABA: Laboratory for Jewish Culture announces the 2018-2019 Fellows: a group of thirteen culture-makers, a mix of visual artists, writers, musicians, playwrights, dancers, composers, film-and theater-makers, and directors who are brought together to study classic Jewish texts in a non-religious, open-minded setting centered on a chosen theme; this year's theme is LIFE + DEATH.
The 2018-2019 Fellows are Dmitri Barcomi, Ari Brand, Maya Ciarrocchi, Jessica Tamar Deutch, Yochai Greenfeld, Jeanne Heifetz, Marques Hollie, Stav Palti-Negev, Richard Saudek, Mariano Wainsztein, Ilana Sichel, Yonatan Gutfeld and Alex Weiser.
Highlights for this season's LABAlive events include:
--Dmitri Bercomi's Necrophoresis, a cross-medium dance-theater piece exploring the death rituals of ants and the life of Anna Freud
--Avi Brand's full-length play, exploring the AIDS epidemic in NYC through discoveries made about the death of his father, Natan, a virtuosic concert pianist, lapsed Orthodox Jew and closeted gay man
--Maya Ciarnochhi's Yizkor, a performance-installation that reveals the lost and forgotten spaces left by the dead, specifically the destroyed architectural site of Ozarow, Poland, the shtetl where her family originated
--Jessica Tamar Deutsch's Illustrated Life and Death, a series of large ink drawings with text that studies the practices of birth doulas and chevra kadishas (groups that prepare the body for burial) to gain insights into these moments of Life + Death and the significance they carry in a Jewish (and human) context
--Yochai Greenfeld's Yiddish Drag Queen show, exploring the edgy medium of drag performance and its recent acceptance into the mainstream through the prism of ancient Aramaic and the cultural context of Yiddish
--Jeanne Heifetz's Pre-Occupied, a series of drawings that addresses mortality through the formal language of cemetery maps
--Marques Hollie's Go Down, Moshe, a retelling of Exodus using the musical tradition of negro spirituals, civil-rights era music and the written narratives of enslaved people
--Stav Palti-Negev's play adaptation of Hieronymous Bosch's painting, "The Garden of Earthly Delights," a triptych of three possible options of existence: Paradise, Hell and Something In-Between
--Richard Saudek's weird and wistful Clown Show, featuring two clowns (until one dies), with a Chagall-esque fiddler to accompany the hijinks
--Ilana Sichel's non-fiction project (part-memoir, part-essayistic grappling) about the death of her 34-year-old brother to cancer and end-of-life ethics
--Mariano Wainsztein's song cycle of Hebrew poems by the self-exiled poet Ha'Loazy, dealing with the death of "home" and the loss of identity while celebrating the minimalist economics of the Hebrew language
--Alex Weiser's opera, State of the Jews, which follows the last year in the life of Theodor Herzl, interweaving historical and personal narratives as his struggle to secure a Jewish homeland takes a toll on his family life
--Jewish Ghost Stories: Demons, Monsters and Madness in the Bible and Talmud, short, scary stories taken from Classical Jewish texts. The 1915 filmThe Golem will be screened, with live musical accompaniment by LABA Fellows
LABAlive Series
February 2, April 18, May 25, @7:30PM
2019
Experience excerpts of new works-in-progress presented by the 14th Street Y's LABA Fellows, devising new work around the theme of LIFE + DEATH. Each artist's unique contemplation presented on stage weaves into a multidisciplinary evening shared with the public. LABA encourages artists to test boundaries, take risks, and discover ways in which classical Jewish text can inspire new, deep and meaningful works, which are then coupled with a theatrical teaching of text to enhance and widen the context of each piece. At each LABAlive, Fellows intrigue and inspire, leaving audiences with a curiosity to see more. Many of the Fellows' works go on to second-stage productions, with many premiering at the 14th Street Y the following year.

It is October, 1969 and unbeknownst to the rest of the world, three 20-something radicals are busy planning the impending revolution from a quiet college town in Upstate New York. The new cast recordings are:
Desperate Measures, the award-winning 2017 hit musical with book and lyrics by Peter Kellogg and music by David Friedman. Executive Producers of the recording are Mary Cossette and Willette Klausner, with Friedman as Associate Producer.
Desperate Measures takes place in 1890, in a territory out West, where Johnny Blood, a hot-tempered young cowboy is sentenced to hang for killing a man in a bar fight. His sister, a novice nun in a nearby mission, is persuaded to plead with a corrupt governor to spare her brother’s life. The governor promises to pardon Johnny if his sister, the Sister, will 'do his bidding' for the night. Adding to the humorous complications are a hard-bitten sheriff, a voluptuous saloon girl, and a priest who reads Nietzsche.
Winner of the 2018 Outer Critics Award for Best Musical, the critically-acclaimed production of Desperate Measures received its New York premiere at The York Theatre Company, in association with Cecilia Lin and Hu Guo, where it played an extended engagement from September 19 – December 31, 2018, prior to transferring to its current home at New World Stages (340 West 50th Street). The new production is produced by Pat Addiss, Mary Cossette, and Willette Klausner; Executive Producer is Ken Denison.
Unexpected Joy, the critically acclaimed new musical with book and lyrics by Bill Russell and music by Janet Hood. Produced by John Yap forJAY Records and co-produced by Hood and Russell, the recording with the four-member all-female cast features Courtney Balan as Rachel,Allyson Kaye Daniel as Lou, Luba Mason as Joy, and Celeste Rose as Tamara, directed by Amy Anders Corcoran, and with music direction by Beth Falcone. Musicians are Falcone and Hood on piano, Brian Hamm and Ritt Henn on bass, Jack Morer on guitar, and Jeff Potter on drums.
Unexpected Joy is the story of three generations of female singers, long-held family tensions, and a week together where change is in the air. In modern day Cape Cod, Joy, a baby boomer and proud hippie, is holding a memorial concert for the other half of her popular musical duo, Jump & Joy. When her tightly-wound conservative daughter and her sweet rebellious granddaughter arrive from Oklahoma, the sparks fly as one family seeks to find the common ground in their different values, dreams and goals. Unexpected Joy is a heartfelt and hilarious story that weaves folk-rock, pop, and blues in uniting a family that hasn’t experienced true joy together for decades.
Unexpected Joy received its New York premiere at the York Theatre Company, in association with Jim Kierstead, Aria Entertainment, Gabby Hanna & Marcy Feller, Riki Kane Larimer, Linda & Craig Wielkotz, Drew Desky & Dane Levens/Michael Mills, William Fernandez/Behzad Dabu, where it played an extended engagement from April 24 – May 27, 2018. Unexpected Joy is currently in performance at London’s Southwark Playhouse through September 29, 2018.
Lonesome Blues, the world premiere new musical based on the true story of legendary bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson, was created by Alan Govenar and Akin Babatundé. Produced by Documentary Arts, the recording features Akin Babatundé as Blind Lemon Jefferson with David Weiss on guitar, directed by Katherine Owens. The Executive Producer of the recording is Alan Govenar.
The world premiere musical Lonesome Blues is the true story of the legendary bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson: born blind, but ultimately able to express his deepest emotions through music. Discovered on a street corner in the Deep Ellum section of Dallas, Texas in 1925, Jefferson made more than 80 records over the next four years, becoming one the most prolific and influential performers of his generation and propelling the growth of rhythm and blues, soul, doo-wop, rap, and hip-hop. Building on the success of their earlier musical Blind Lemon Blues, presented by the York in 2007 and 2009, Alan Govenar and Akin Babatundé have used new research to probe deeper into the life and psyche of Blind Lemon Jefferson. In Lonesome Blues, Babatundé plays more than ten different roles, channeling the spirits of men and women alike, in a journey that is at once evocative, troubling, and transformative. Songs and monologues bring to life the voice of Blind Lemon Jefferson, his community, and his musical contemporaries, including Blind Willie Johnson, Lillian Glinn, Hattie Hudson, Bobbie Cadillac, and Lead Belly—all coming together in Jefferson's mind on the day of his death, December 19, 1929, in Chicago.
Lonesome Blues received its world premiere at The York Theatre Company, in association with Documentary Arts, where it played a 3-week engagement from June 12 – July 1, 2018.
The new CD recordings of Desperate Measures and Unexpected Joy are now available online at www.amazon.com, and www.jayrecords.com, respectively. Pre-orders for Lonesome Blues can be made by visiting the York website at www.yorktheatre.org.
